If a tsunami made it all the way to the Sahara desert, then that would be news that would reported on. Dez gave lip service that he was "going to" use a route guru, along with several other Cowboys. But I have not ever seen any reports that he actually followed through with that.

Dez has tweeted about every stupid thing he has done but I haven't seen any tweets about him using a route guru. Have you?

I actually think like Dak, Romo had a worse QB rating when throwing to Dez than any other receiver, even with all the TDs. He simply doesn't produce like a #1 WR should and it would seem the rest of the NFL sees it too. Although it sounds like some fans only saw the flashy plays and the TDs because some of them can't understand why he's unemployed right now.

I don't know if he did or didn't. But he was scheduled to this offseason and evidently the Cowboys hated the idea of it.

They hated all of his idea's but yet they changed receiver coaches and supposedly want to be more dynamic in their scheme.


Dez was done dirty by the Cowboys. He's one of the best WR's in our franchises history and he was not treated right by the team. He would've played for next to nothing if they would just let him. He wants to be a Cowboy and the team let him down.


They didn't even offer him a paycut. That's whats disgusting. They can keep crappy Garrett and Linehan but we get rid of our Sunday Warrior. Unbelievable.

Nothing against Allen Hurns either but we could've probably kept Dez for Hurns money.

I know you are a Dez fan and this hurts you. I appreciate the civil manner in which you are addressing this issue. Kudos to you for that.

The fact that no team seems to want Dez says a lot about how he is viewed by the league. Even the known cancer TO hit several job offers because he could play at a high level. Dez isn't anywhere near the cancer that TO was.

But part of Dez' problem is he doesn't think he needs to improve and that the team needs to adapt to him rather than vice versa. I think his single largest hurdle at this point is his unrealistic view of his current level of play. And it's a huge hurdle.

It's big enough that there is at least "some" chance he may never play another meaningful down of football. He really hasn't helped himself. He could have said nothing and maybe had a job by now.

This weekend has an eerie, onerous feel to it as a Cowboys fan.

But it's also wrapped in a shroud of uncertainty for Carolina as well.

Carollina can play some defense, and last year's Cowboys offense would likely struggle to score more than 20 points against it. The Panthers can play you straight up, sit in zones, and fly to the short throws. That was Kryptonite for the Cowboy offense last season.

However, this isn't last year's Cowboys offense. Dallas showed almost nothing in preseason, vanilla-ing teams to death through a dreadfully boring 16 quarters of yuck. Basic, basic, basic. Not a hint of nuance or misdirection all August long.

Entirely by design. Carolina is left entirely to guess.

Gone are Witten and Dez. Here are Austin, Hurns, Gallup, Thompson, Olawale, 17 new tight ends, and an entirely new coaching staff under Linehan, along with a subtle hint from Mr. Jones to "make things more comfortable for Dak" by implementing more of what he did in college.

What's next is pure speculation. Including ours. The first couple of teams on the schedule get to find out first what's not on film yet.

Will it look wildly different? No, it'll still be Zeke and the freight-train running game carrying the water, but expect a lot of new looks, especially on 3rd downs. Austin will be all over the place. Look for a lot of underneath "picks" and quick outs disguised in all sorts of packages, along with some deep shots down the sideline when they can get single coverage with late safety help.

Will it work? Sure, I think it'll help quite a bit. Will it score more points? I have my doubts. Will it work against good defenses several games from now when it's all on film? That's where my darkest doubts lie.

Granted, it often takes a couple of weeks for NFL teams to settle in and find their rhythm, especially with so few reps in the preseason. So only so much can be expected or gleaned from the first game of the season.

But I believe the new-look Cowboys offense is hoping to steal some games early on the strength of their current anonymity. A good start to the season is vital with multiple tough games looming.

The Cowboys can weather the storm better with it's new-found defense. It's up to the offense to find a new stride, too, and as quickly as possible.

Carolina is a good test, and a great chance to take a big offensive step in the right direction.

We went 13-3 with Zeke in the lineup in 2016. 6-4 with him in the line up in 2017. Yes teams will gear up to stop Zeke. Go ahead, 19-7 would suggest they haven't been overly successful. In Zeke and the O-line I trust. I don't know about these WR's or TE's any more than anyone else but I'll give give Dak a couple of games to figure it out. Go Cowboys

You say not much will be that different, other than personnel, so what exactly will help so much?

Personally, I think we'll see a few more RPOs, a few more designed Dak runs, and that's about it. I do think Dak running will help, but I don't see the personnel making much difference because the players aren't much -- if any -- better.

I think there will be a lot more diversity, given the absence of Witten and Dez. I see a whole new offence, like Zeke in the flat, like Zeke over the middle, like Gallup going deep, and yes, even Rico in the red zone. Without denigrating Witten, his game was less and less each year. Not saying he won't be missed, but it was time for him to go. No big stars on the WR bench, but all the stars had to start the same way.

Historically that is not true. Good teams have historically had a difficult time scoring on good defenses. If we can control the run with the the tackles we have, WE will have a very good D and good teams will have a difficult time scoring against us. If Linehan can diversify the O a little, and we can average 24 points a game, WE will win a lot of games if the D tackles come through vs the run. I am so looking forward to having a dominate D. It will happen if the D tackles come through for us.

I know what you're saying relative to good D vs good O. However, many aspects of that have changed over the years as defenses have been hamstrung with the multitude of crap rules designed for so-called safety or, in order to put more points on the board. Personally, I miss the days when a TD meant something and it didn't come down to who had the ball last ...
