Jerry Jones wants to win

Insisted on being the GM of a team even though he was both unqualified and incapable that led to mostly mediocrity for over 20 years. Yup, must be jealousy!!!!!!!!!
"Mostly mediocrity" and a bust in Canton. What an incredible life Jerry has lived.

Yes, it is jealousy.

Not sure if you caught my original post, but I acknowledged the elation component of his response. I wouldn't go any farther than that. If you have an axe to grind with anything else, sorry, can't help you.

Also, this isn't some consensus building exercise, so if you view something different with Jerry's reaction, cool! It's totally okay if we don't agree on this.Totally ok.

I know you acknowledged the elation, but you said it was insufficient to indicate winning is paramount to Jerry. The OP didn't say that it was, therefore you attempted to discredit the video for not indicating something it was not intended to indicate. For the purpose stated in the OP, the video was sufficient.

He certainly wants to win
He certainly THINKS he’s smart enough to put the pieces in place to win
He has been better at listening to those around him as of late
But he’s never going to hire a guy to do the shopping for him and give him total control

To be fair, Jerry is in the HOF for being an owner, not a GM. He does deserve to be in the HOF for being an owner, his business sense has done wonders to grow the game and the NFL into being the national pastime. A GM? Not so much.

As others have said, I think Jerry wants to win more than all of us on Cowboys Zone put together. The problem lies in the fact that he wants his personnel decisions to be a key component of us winning, at the expense of... well, you've seen what's happened since Jimmy left. I know how stupidly optimistic I am about this team every year, I can only imagine how overly-optimistic I would be if I had put the team together myself and was signing the checks. Also, think of it this way- Jerry has been successful at virtually everything he has ever done in his life. He built himself up from not much (I won't say nothing, but still, not much), so it's probably hard for someone like him to admit defeat and hand over the reigns. This doesn't make being fans of the team any easier, but I at least understand it. And until I can make about $10 billion and buy him out, I don't think anything is going to change that.

If he bought a 5 star restaurant he would make himself the Head Chef. As business plummeted he would claim that his restaurant was just as good as that "other" 5 star restaurant.

At least in your example he would go out of business never to be heard from again but being the foolish fans we are, we continue to support the team and his nonsense thus why things never change

I have not read the whole thread but this take is pretty close. True, he does want to win his way. The one thing that few outsiders accept or even wish to conceive is even remotely true is that Jones believes he is the only person in the entire world best qualified as the general manager of his team. 29 straight years establishes solid proof of his belief.

No one will (likely) ever convince him someone else can do a better job than him. Outsiders can say Jones is stupid. Insane. Conceited. No problem. However, not stopping for one moment in life and understanding the real reason why Jones will not hand over complete general manager responsibilities to someone else will keep those individuals forever clawing at that own eyeballs.

Cliffs: it's his toy and no one else is going to play with it until he's 6 feet under

Those other "billionaire owners" have NOTHING on Jerry's resume that I laid out here.

Funny how those at the top always get the most hate. Funny and not at all coincidental.
Who cares about Jerry's resume? He won 3 SB's because he hired Jimmy Johnson. Has won 2 playoff games since the Dynasty ended. The Dallas Cowboys were already a big brand when he bought the team. Tex Schramm and Tom Landry built the brand. Jimmy expanded it and Jerry's been living off it ever since. If he had bought the Chargers like he originally wanted nobody would care what he would have done. Would have been one of 32 owners. The only reason anyone cares about him is because of the Dallas Cowboys. As for the HOF, he's in for things he did for the NFL not for what he did with the Cowboys.

Yeah, I don’t know that it was. But I believe we’ve covered that.

You must not know much about the state of the Dallas Cowboys in 1989 if you think Jerry didn't turn things around. The team was LOSING money and are now the most valuable sports franchise in the history of sports. LOL

Yes, he fired Landry and hired Jimmy. That was Jerry's call 100%. How'd it work out?

And you're wrong about "2 playoff wins since the dynasty" if the dynasty ended in Jan. 1996.

I lived through it. I know all about it. He hired Jimmy. That was the only good thing he did with the Cowboys. Jimmy turned the team around. Jerry did what Jimmy told him to do. The Cowboys already had a rabid fan base waiting to win again. I know I was one of them. So yea we were still America's team. As I said if he would have bought the Chargers nobody would have cared. The only reason people care now is because it's the Cowboys. We live off our past glory no matter how long ago it was. We stay fans because we have great memories of the glory years even though deep down we know we're never winning anything else as long as Jerry is in charge. The truth hurts. Yea Jerry has the most valuable franchise in the world after 23 years of mediocrity. Whoopee. And Oh yea that lone playoff win in 1996 which was still won by the Triplets. Nice try. Like 3 playoff wins is any better. lol

Jerry wants to be given the credit for building a Super Bowl team more than he wants to win.He wants to be given center stage so he can explain to everyone just how he, Jerry Jones, is the person most responsible for winning. Being the owner who hired the real architect isn't good enough,he has to be acknowledged as that architect. If he could get away with it, he would take credit as the Head Coach in addition to GM and owner. If you catch him on the right day, his interviews have fewer "we"'s and far more "I"'s.

Plastic you are the MAN!

He may not know how to win, but he wants too. Look at this emotion. This isn’t fake.

JJ is a ******* idiot who is all about the money.

His son is an idiot too. But he seems to get it that hes an idiot and so he delegates reponsibility to the ones who actually know a thing or two about football.

The "rabid fan base" that stopped attending games and buying merchandise because the team was in the gutter?? The rabid fan base whose team was losing $1 million PER MONTH?? That rabid fan base???

Imagine if Jerry never bought the Cowboys. There would be no Jimmy, no '90s dynasty and the team wouldn't be worth half of what it's worth now.

You could trash Jerry for things you dislike about him or you could praise him for the incredible place the franchise has been in since he bought the team.

Seems like an easy choice for me. But jealousy and envy are powerful motivators for others.

Wrong. The team was never "in the gutter".

Landry's three losing seasons? 7-9, 7-8 (strike shortened), and 3-13.

"Bum" Bright was selling the Cowboys only because he was failing financially in his other business ventures.

Many players on the team that you saw in the Super Bowls were there before Jimmy arrived, including three starters on the offensive line, Newton,Tuinei, and Gogan. They had Michael Irvin, Ken Norton, Jim Jeffcoat, Bill Bates, Kelvin Martin, and Chad Hennings after his military obligation). They still had Herschel Walker.

Everyone knew Schramm was going to draft Aikman with the #1 overall pick. Landry had attended a few of Aikman's workout himself, Landry had changed his defensive coordinator because he had come up with a new defense, a 4-3, 3-4 hybrid.

And if the game had "passed him by", as so many revisionists like to say about Coach Tom Landry, then I am confused every time I watch a game on TV. Why? Because half of what I still see today was invented by the man. I still see the 4-3 defense. I still see offensive pre-snap motion. I still see passing from the shotgun. The game could never have passed Landry by because he would have simply changed it.

Landry would have rebuilt the Cowboys into winners and it would have been quick. I am by no means saying that he would have won three Super Bowls, we will never know, but the idea that the Cowboys were "in the gutter", either financially or competitively is ridiculous.

But the real point is, how much time does these Super Bowls buy you? How long is the excuse, "But he is responsible for bringing 3 Super Bowls" supposed to last? As long as Landry? Landry lasted seven seasons after his most recent NFC championship appearance. Jones has been so-called GM for almost four times as long after his.

And as far as the 90's "dynasty" is concerned, a dynasty typically lasts at least ten years. It was Jerry's fault that it lasted half that time. All we have to do is remember little gems like "500 coaches could coach the Cowboys" and "Emmitt Smith is a luxury not a necessity"toremind us of his contribution.

Finally, who gives a _______ what the team is worth?

17-30 over 3 years isn’t “in the gutter? Um, if you say so.

Jones owns the team. He is not an employee like Landry was. You seem bitter about Jerry’s lofty status.

Landry won 2 rings in 29 seasons (0 in his last ELEVEN seasons). Jimmy won 2 rings in 5 seasons. You seem bitter about that too.

I want them to win more than he does...I might not be the billionaire owner he is but as a fan I have been around way before he took over. Tired of the mediocrity put a winner on the table instead of this up and down crap the past 24 years...
