Did Garrett's OT decision cost him more than just the game?

I guess its a good thing JJ Watt isn't a head coach. Indy was at their own 43 with 4 yard to go. Dallas was at the opponents 42 with 1 yard to go. Completely different scenarios, and outcome probabilities.

What Garrett should have done is tell his OL and RB he believes in them and thinks that a 94% success rate is a credit to their professionalism and dedication to beating their opponent in the big moment. It's what they all to a man would have wanted or they wouldn't be playing in the NFL.

If the Cowboys went for it and failed, how many of those players do you think would have blamed the coaching staff? As it is now, taking the game out their hands casts a shadow of no confidence in them through the eyes of their coach.

So the only play call they had for that would have been to run up the middle with Zeke?? QB sneak is a high percentage there which Dallas has converted a few times in the past on days when Zeke was getting stuffed. It was more 4th and 2 as they lost yardage on 3-1, qb sneak isn't a high percentage play at 4-2 and Dak barely got the other 3-1 on a sneak. Hindsight would give you 10 plays if you could get a do over...lol

Jason Garrett's decision to punt rather than go for it on 4th-and-1 last night is drawing heavy criticism today. The overtime loss to the Houston Texans has put the Cowboys head coach in the crosshairs perhaps more than ever before, and even his owner and quarterback have had their say.

Now, let's look at what Jerry Jones and Dak Prescott have had to say about the head coach's decision. What do these comments tells us about Garrett's support and job security as of today?

First, courtesy of CBS Sports' Ryan Wilson, here's what Jason himself said about his choice:

"Yeah, it was a long one," he said after the game. "You know, we had a 3rd-and-2 and we didn't make much on it and we just felt like at that point in the game, the way our defense was playing, the idea was to pin them down there."

Again, you can check out my article earlier today for what I think of Garrett's logic there. While there's some merit to what he said about the issues with the running game yesterday, the situation was just the wrong time to stop trusting your best players.

If they went for it and didn’t make it I would have respected that decision more and apparently the owner/GM did as well. Tells me Garrett is going for the win right there. Houston was moving the ball up and down the field they just couldn’t get it into the end zone. All they obviously needed was a field goal at that point.

Sure from some but not the amount he is today for not going. Most people can live with a coach being aggressive in the right situation. Where do you stand? Did you agree with that decision?

I am sure they have a lot of plays to get one yard they could have tried. The point is,there was not much to gain, if anything, by punting. People who say the defense was playing well should look at the stats a second time. The Texans had 5 trips inside the 10 yard line. The Texans had over 400 yards in regulation. The defense played well near the goal line but they gave up a lot of yards. In that situation, if the Cowboys punted, all the Texans needed to do was get into FG range and the game was over. If the Cowboys were leading by 5 and the Texans needed a TD to win, Garrett's strategy might have been more sound. But needing only a FG, it was better to try for the first down and try to win the game with a 1 yard play.

Of course doing something besides a run straight into the teeth of their defense would have been prudent well before the OT period began. Like when the schedule first came out. "Hey, lets not run straight at JJ, Clowney, Mercilus & company even with our starting five" much less with backup C & undeveloped rookie LG. How bout we run a toss sweep and take our chances on sealing a side. Might have changed those statistics about how many of Zeke's runs went for zero or negative yards. Just saying.

I really don't think running wide in a short yardage situation would be the best strategy with 9 or 10 defenders at or near the LOS.
