Yeah, what it is really is the "Rock & Roll Era Hall of Fame".

A lot of you don't seem to know that the Rock n Roll HoF isn't exclusive to those bands in the rock n roll genre. It's more of a 'music/open genre' HoF

It's always been like this. From 80's hip hop to 90's grunge to KISS to disco. It's everything.

LL brought East Coast hip hop further into the "Western" spotlight in the early 90's (@Tabascocat), after being a huge hit in the 80's on the East Coast hip hope scene, and propelling Def Jam further forward as a viable record label. He followed it up with edgy singles (like "Doing It") in the mid-90s, during the sex-fueled R&B/Hip Hop MTV music vid/also radio single craze. 2 Grammys (I know, but consider the subject of the OP), 1 #1, 8 top-10, 28 top-100. He's in for his influence, success, and his part in the growth of hip hop, imo.

Def Leppard is the first name that jumped out at me. Definitely worthy IMO. I also think LL Cool J. He is a staple of early hip-hop! When I was a kid, like 10-11, I wanted to get my hands on his Mama Said Knock You out album so bad!

I get some of it to a degree. Some rock derived from things like blues and R&B, and things like grunge derived from rock. Like you say, there are influences. I don’t remotely see John Prine though. Doesn’t seem to be any relationship at all to rock and roll.

The Supremes, Otis Redding, Bob Marley to name a few... there are a lot of performers that deviate away from what we consider rock n roll, or music derived from rock n roll, that are "enshrined."

I just view it as an empty award, similar to when a celebrity is given a doctorate from some college they donated 100k to, or college looking for spotlight. But, as Mike said, it's something to discuss.

Then again, music is Rock n Roll. Rock n Roll is music.

Cant wait until Zeppelin or Rush gets in and shows these wanna-bes how it done...…..j/k:laugh:

Def Leppard you say? Is this some kinda sick joke...….Bon Joke last year, Leppard this year who is next year? Poison or Warrant? What a joke.

Easy there big fella!

I'm curious as to why Bon Jovi is a joke to you or is it hair bands in general? Is it because they got in before others you deem more significant to rock n' roll?

I don’t disagree with your point, but Prine didn’t deviate away from Rock and Roll, he was never at any point even in the ballpark of it.

Stevie will make it, but I felt for a HOF standpoint it should be through only Fleetwood Mac.
Love her voice, but solo career was good, no HOF worthy.

Rage will probably make it, but they are political and so I'll end it there.
Radiohead, yup.

My view is that you have to be durable and innovative/influential to merit entry (of course, in reality this is just a marketing thing). So no to Def Leppard, for instance. Radiohead is obvious, I think The Cure belongs. Devo may not have done quite enough. Stevie Nicks is a no as a solo artist. I don't know hip-hop but assume LL Cool J belongs. No strong feelings about the others.

There is some seriously good stuff that came out of that.

Ever listen to Placebo? Openly homo and angsty. They had some seriously nasty jams and there music destroys alot of more notable groups of that era
Love the lead singers voice and it seems to play off the piano perfectly. But then, I like unusual voices in my rock.

He's not, but when you're Bob Dylan's favorite American song writer, you get an exception.

It is strictly my personal opinion but I would select only 3 off that list and 1 I do not like or listen to as they're really an acquired taste, one that I never acquired, Radiohead. Their influence on the changes in rock are worthy of induction.

Def Leppard because for two back to back albums, they ruled the radio airwaves and I have a soft spot in my heart for any band that waits for their one armed drummer to relearn his craft instead of just replacing him.

They won't make it because they do not have the depth of commercial material that the public recognizes but talk to any Techno/Trance/House players over the last 40 years of that music developing and they will all cite Kraftwerk's influence. They were more of a novelty track for radio back then but they've been doing some really nice work since Autobahn.

Knowing how wonky the HOF is, I look for Janet Jackson and LL Cool J to get in because they need some balance and variety.

Stevie Nicks is already in, do they need to put here in as a solo? They did that with The Beatles but all had more successful solo careers.

And they like to always have a questionable "rocker' to induct so Prine could make it.

Nope, I have zero problems with hair bands. The RRHOF should be reserved for only the very best which would disqualify about 70% of those who are currently in. This is from the official site...………

"Artists—a group encompassing performers, composers and/or musicians—become eligible for induction 25 years after the release of their first commercial recording. Besides demonstrating unquestionable musical excellence and talent, inductees will have had a significant impact on the development, evolution and preservation of rock & roll"
Strangely there is pic of the bozo from Green Day right above what I just quoted....

Anyways the above criteria should disqualify about 70% of the current members including Bon Jovi, they weren't excellent musicians nor did they have a significant impact on the development, evolution and preservation of R&R.
