Depends on if Marinelli retires and they offer the DC job with a hefty pay increase to Richard. He's building rep and can afford to wait for the right job and just because there's an opening doesn't mean it's the right move.

The problem is the NFL is into recycling and even if he did take a HC job and fail, he could still pocket the coin and end up back in a DC job. Look at Wade Phillips and Norv Turner's career paths. Turner walked out on a team in mid season and still landed an OC job.

The question is why would Richard pass up a HC to be the DC DC with no clear path to the HC? If he's interested in being the DC HC. I do believe there are some coaches that would want no part of the DC HC job unless they needed the coin. It is not the usual HC job in the NFL.

Richard can be the DC here, and maybe Jerry pays him enough to make it worthwhile for now. But eventually we will lose him to Garrett.

Richard is Tier 1 head coaching candidate by advisory board. Garrett survives by making the playoffs. So the dream of Richard replacing him is likely dead. Richard will be head coaching another team in 2019 and we’re stuck with the Clapper for another year (or decade). Shoot me now.

Hopefully Marinelli retires and Richard will be offered the Defensive Coordinator job at top dollar for 2-3 years.

I'd love to see JJ give Richard a long term contract with head coach money like he did with Garrett. Lol! Garrett wouldn't be clapping for that!

If Richard is smart he'l bolt the first chance he gets and distance himself from the Jerry circus. Its bad enough he's had to answer to that incompetent he has as a HC this season.

There's no salary cap on coaches.
Jerry will throw the bank at Richard I would guess and promote him to defensive coordinator.

I hope we can keep Richard as DC. As a unit I imagine our defense is young enough to be attractive for him to stay and mold.

Much ado about nothing, in all likelihood. Nice panic job though.

Also isn't that scenario true no matter where Richard is? He goes to another team and does great, then is considered for HC jobs. How is that limited to Dallas?

Also great Defensive Coordinators don't automatically make great Head Coaches. Marinelli is considered one of the best DCs and he was 10 - 38 as a Head Coach. I could also play the dreaded Wade Phillips card.

Need two coordinators; Richard for DC and some hot shot for OC (I have mentioned Riley a few dozen times, but there are others)

But, that is a 2nd week of February issue once Richard is done coaching this season
