Some 2006 self-torture to help pump us up for this Saturday

I watched that game with my father from his hospital room.
He got me into watching and rooting for the Cowboys in the 70's because he and Roger Staubach both served in the Navy.

It was the last game we would watch together and he would not see the sunrise the next morning. He was 79. :(

I wouldn't mind a win here; heck I'll take a boring blowout win.

I didn’t see this game cause we were getting married that night. Truly a day that lives in infamy
What?!!

Getting married on a football day?

You should've just self-flagellated and got married the next day.......

;)

Nothing like a bit of self-flagellation to help us serve a revenge dish 12 years cold. Hey, "The Catch" was still motivating Dallas fans prior to the 1992 NFC title game.

  • Walt Anderson incorrectly ruled a 1st-and-goal to be 4th down. Had he upheld the first down, the Cowboys could have simply knelt out the clock and kicked a game-winner as time expired, or punched it in for six.
  • The Seahawks illegally tampered with the K-ball by rubbing it up with a lubricating substance.
  • Had Gramatica simply thrown even the slightest of blocks on Babineaux, Romo would have either scored or gotten a first down.
  • In the 2006 playoff game, the Seahawks had an extremely depleted secondary, even having to pick up Pete Hunter off the streets, yet Parcells went all conservative and refused to unleash Romo and the aerial attack.
  • The Cowboys defense could have gotten a safety or at least forced Seattle to punt, but they promptly surrendered a 20-yard run to Shaun Alexander.

I think the K-ball situation would have been the case even if we had gotten closer. That was just down-right cheating.
As for the Parcells coaching strategy, that burns me up to this day. I know Parcells is conservative. But you MUST challenge a depleted secondary, especially with Romo as quarterback. That was a critical coaching miscalculation.

I don’t remember it raining that night.

I would like to find some video from the game, but if I remember correctly it had rained off and on that day. Its Seattle - it rains most days there.

Was it raining at the moment of the botched FG? Dunno, but the field did look slick.

The bobbled snap was the worst part of that game but those other things were bad too.
I sometimes think that game was fixed. How could BP not go after that secondary? I think he had money on the game. Probably why he quit after the game.

Edit- that Terry Glenn fumble was a huge killer. He was BP's guy, he was probably in on the fix too.

The Terry Glenn fumble through the back of the end zone for a safety was also absolutely brutal...ughhh

We should have won that game no doubt.

I remember the lead up all week to that game was that it was going to be another Tampa Bay experience where Romo torches a depleted secondary for 300+ yards and 5 TDs.

Then we come out in a bunch of 2 TE sets and went more max protect and three step drops then at any point previously that year. It was maddening and a testament to how Parcells, great as he could be, only felt comfortable playing one style of football in the playoffs.

Had we come out in exclusively 11 and 10 personnel and bludgoened them with seam, post and dig routes we’d have won by a couple scores.

My buddy is a Seahawks fan and has been giving me some fun ribbing already this week. He sent me the infamous Romo on the field picture as a friendly reminder. LOL Jerk! What comes around goes around. :D;)

Has the first one? Sounds eerily like the modern-day whine we get.
The call was a first down, they reviewed it and was denied a first down. After all of the replays, nothing was conclusive. The camera angle was not helpful either way. Imo without conclusive evidence, that call should have stood.

Also, Romo probably didn't know babineau was right behind him. He probably thought he was going to score. Had he took less of an angle he probably would have gotten a first down at least.

Probably the worst chain of events i've ever seen as a Cowboys fan.

Here's the game.
Start watching at the 2:00:00 mark. If you can stomach it.

The ONE thing that sticks out to me about that game, and that play, is how close Romo came to getting the first down. If that end rusher doesn’t go all out, Romo gets the first down and probably scores. He was THIS close.
The amazing thing is that play painted the entire narrative for Romo. He scores there and his legacy is probably totally different

Actually the narrative for Romo was sealed in 2007 when he went to Cabo during the bye week. Then he followed up the playoff loss to the Giants with a eulogy about how he’s lived a good life if the loss is the worst thing to happen to him. Many fans lost trust in him after that.

that was always bill parcells weakness in the playoffs. he was always too conservative. he coached that game like it was 1980's mentality. if we had a great defense like his giants teams were then the cowboys would have won that game but what he had in that game was a average defense that was a bend don't break defense. our offense was much better then seahawks he did not trust romo in a pressure game since it was his first playoff game so he went the conservative way. that game should have not ended that close we should have won that game by ten points or more had he trusted romo more.

I have a bad feeling that with zeke back in the lineup that garrett will coach the same way. he might think that we can run and control the clock and play defense we can win this game. it is going to take Prescott throwing the ball to win this game I hope that garrett and linehan can call good pass plays to score in this game. I have a feeling that our defense is going to struggle stopping the seahawks running game. this will be the best running offense that the cowboys have seen all year.
