Fine. But that’s just to say that you don’t think Garrett has earned the right to hang around. Many would agree. That doesn’t mean that, having been allowed to hang around, he’s less likely to achieve ultimate success going forward. If anything, he’s probably statistically more likely.

Actually the fact he's accomplished very little in terms of high level coaching success in the NFL would indicate that it's probably less likely he could win a SB going forward.

Because the resumes of the vast majority of SB winning coaches would indicate, up until this point in their careers, over 95% of them had accomplished something beyond what Garrett has.

It's not impossible for Garrett to win a SB. But it's very unlikely.

You should also mention to our younger readers that the wild card round didn't exist in Landry's day. The first round was the "divisional round" .

Since Jerry harkens back to Landry now, he should apply the same standard. Jerry, by Landry era standards, hasn't won a playoff game in 23 years.
Great point.

Landry WAS criticized heavily early on.
But Dallas was an expansion team and he was the first coach.
It took 6-7 years, but after that, the train was really rollin

The obvious flaw in the analogy is that under Landry the Cowboys started a team from scratch, without a single player, and had to build a team.

lol. Thread is at four pages already and will likely attract the usual 'wow' comments. Here is another attempt to rationalize things for Jerry Jones' observers.

  • Exaggerates own importance
  • Is preoccupied with fantasies of success, power, beauty, intelligence or ideal romance
  • Believes he or she is special and can only be understood by other special people or institutions
  • Requires constant attention and admiration from others
  • Has unreasonable expectations of favorable treatment
  • Takes advantage of others to reach his or her own goals
  • Shows arrogant behaviors and attitudes
Jones is not your Average Joe. Some people are continually shocked, whether mildly or worse, whenever he opens his mouth because they think Jones is some rich hillbilly JR Ewing wannabe.

Again, Jones is not your Average Joe. He is a narcissist. Everyone should expect him to say whatever he says because he sincerely believes "He's All That."

The man thinks he is as good as Tex Schramm and Tom Landry, or better, walking the same yellow brick road they did that ended in Super Bowls. It does not matter how far he may be sitting in the left field stands making this or any other comment. This is not hard to understand.

Landry played and coached at a high level on a championship team before coming to Dallas.

Garrett was on the roster of championship teams with one shining moment on Thanksgiving, a la Clint Longley, and was a QB coach at best before coming to Dallas.

Landry basically invented the middle LB and 4-3 defense and brought back the shotgun and multiple formations on offense.

Garrett basically invented the clapping and push off motivation techniques.

Yes JG's tenure is similar to Toms.

Can anyone think of a head coach who spent 8 years in his position then made it to the Super Bowl and won?

Landry does fit that example. However, landry took over an expansion team and molded it with drafts to get into position to win. And even though Landry had six seasons at the beginning of his tenure where he did not win. The facts are he had an amazing run.

Here is a site which gives you Landry's stats.

This is a great site for pro football information on all teams.

But a coach who went through three 8-8 seasons and foundered most of the rest doesn't really match up to many head coaches who went on and won it all.

Jerry would be wise to shut the hell up on this. the minute he starts making comparisons to Tom Landry, he is going to call down the criticism on Garrett and much worse then before. There is a difference between building something from the Bottom up and the struggle that goes along with that and taking over something that has already been built and simply trying to maintain or improve. Garrett is not Landry and to even suggest this is the worst favor Jerry could bestow on Garrett.

Landry had 5 losing season to start the Franchise with. His 6th was .500 and in his 7th, he would post the first of 20 straight winning seasons. Garrett has a very long way to go before you should even put him in the same context as Tom Landry. It's just a really bad idea.

Stop being an idiot Jerry. You are doing everybody around you a disservice here.

its hard to respect a man's opinion on coaching, who once said "500 coaches could coach this team" as he fired/accepted the resignation/came to a mutual agreement on the current 2 time defending Super Bowl Champ coach he currently employed in 1994.

This is so stupid. Why does Jerry have to simultaneously anger fans and make himself look so stupid? Just say you want him back. We all know why: he's a good puppet. That's it. Nobody with an ounce of intelligence is ever going to buy into the fact that Garrett is a Super Bowl coach. Plus he talks about Garrett like he's Tom Landry, yet if we don't beat Philly after the Titans loss, Garrett was likely GONE.

I can tell you this, I sure enjoyed the Cowboys a lot more with Landry at the helm. Jerry angered a lot of Cowboy fans when he fired Landry and proclaimed to fans that the Cowboys were his team. Then, Jerry had a great thing going with Jimmy but Jerry wanted the attention. Jerry has a fragile ego. Garrett’s ability to keep Jerry as a co-coach and feed Jerry’s fragile ego is the primary reason Garrett is still there.

Jeeery finally lost his marbles completely mentioning TOM in the same sentence with Garrett....the gutless wonder.
