Also by rule, NFL must repay all tickets to fans who left game that was overturned. What if Goodell decided to use his power to overturn call then the Saints run the time out and miss the FG, does Goodell take the remaining result of overtime since that would be the outcome or do they play another OT and Saints win game on a FG?

Should be a mechanism to send it to NY for review at the time, it's too late now and the WWE...err I mean the NFL will have to deal with the consequences. I mean this was so bad, the gambling site gave the losers their money back!

It would be a horrible precedent to set. Are you going to do it every time a missed or wrong late penalty decides a game? There would be lawsuits and injunctions whenever fans thought they were screwed by the refs and doing this even once would open the floodgates.
No, because most are clearly "missed" or mistakes. This seemed on purpose. And if you allow "fixing", then the money will go completely away. No one will watch.

I wouldn't consider a missed penalty an "extraordinary act". It happens on virtually every play. The high visibility and significant timing of the missed PI notwithstanding, it remains not very remarkable.

But people are "outraged," therefore overthrow the system. The one good thing is that it now highlights how bad officiating has been the entire season across all games and maybe there's something that can be done to help with obvious blown calls.

Goodell won’t overturn the result for one simple reason...

Because it would extend the immediate focus on this brouhaha straight thru, non-stop, right up until and after the coming Super Bowl. And if that happens, the TV people (read: $$$$$$) will be up$set — VERY up$$$et.

TV controls the NFL; Goodell’s just along for the ride.

But that is why the word "egregious" is used. It has to rise to that level. This is not about "mistakes", but intention. And the result would not be overturned. The game would simply "continue".

It wasn't just any missed penalty. It was clear as day to the entire world because it's where the ball was going.

But since your definition of this act is different, what would be considered extraordinary?

Partial stadium collapse, full stadium collapse, zombies, a bomb, herd of cattle stampede, disgruntled ref hitting the QB in the helmet with a blackjack and sending him into concussion protocol. Those would all be "extra"ordinary. A missed PI call is ordinary. The fact that it was more obviously missed and indisputable doesn't make it extraordinary - or even more damaging than a missed penalty at another point in the game.

All the saints had to do was essentially kneel down three times, run clock almost all the way down, kick a fg..if that penalty would have been called. WE ALL THOUGHT IT. Rams were given a gift opportunity. That said, Saints had chances to stop them from driving down the field and couldn't. Credit to the Rams for that much.

I actually think. Doing this, after of course a thorough explanation that it rises to an extraordinary level, could benefit the viewership. It would show that integrity still matters. Particularly at a time in this country where integrity has been forsaken. I bet it would bring a record crowd. And imagine if LA managed to still win, but legitimately?! The viewership would be off the charts.

That was much much more than a missed PI call.
