The NFL owners should be eternally grateful that NFL fans are so committed to pro football and their favorite NFL teams that even the historically bad commissioner Roger Good Ol Boy can’t ruin the game. Although he’s certainly tried.

In his annual incredibly boring speech called “State of the NFL” yesterday, Roger bored almost everyone to a complete stupor while he shared his annual garbage load of bad jokes, excuses for bad officiating, and skirting of some of the real issues facing the NFL. Let us count the ways Roger “Bad-ell” has been a horrible commissioner:

• Despite bragging upon his coronation that he would be the “law and order” commissioner and crack down on player’s bad behavior, his crackdowns have proven to be aribitrary, inconsistent and at times flat out confusing. Anyone here know what the rules and consequences are for “bad behavior”? This has been a disaster for the league. And can anyone say it has improved player off field behavior?

• Even though the NFL is still very popular, it’s share of the sports entertainment market under Bad-ell has slipped. Ratings among younger fans have slipped, and although they are still fairly strong, ratings and market share for the NBA and MLB have actually risen.

• The officiating has deteriorated in his tenure to the point where in a freakin’ conference championship game, one bad call was so egregious, the outcome of the game was clearly affected. And somehow Bad-ell remained silent on it for nearly 10 days. NHL commissioner Gary Bettman usually comments publicly about officiating mistakes with 24 hours. The NFL rules and their enforcement have become harder to understand and harder to enforce under Roger’s tenure.

• Worst of all, Bad-ell represents only the owners and their greedy interests, not what’s best for the game. NBA commissioner Adam Silver is revered by both NBA owners AND players because he often sides with players on certain issues and is willing to issue orders that handcuff owners so the game can be cleaner, safer, and more conducive to fans and players- not just a bunch of billionaires.

This list could go on and on. I just get really queasy in the stomach every time I see this spineless, incompetent boob, who makes around $40 million a year for the garbage he throws out there.

I respected former commissioners Pete Rozelle and mostly respected Paul Tagliabue. They were giants compared to this completely hapless clown the NFL owners now prop up to do their bidding.

Goodell has kept his job for one reason and one reason only. He was able to break the players during the last CBA negotiations and he got the greedy, short-sighted owners a phenomenal deal over the players. The owners really took the players to the cleaners the last time around. But there are two things to consider:

1. Anybody with even the slightest of ability could have gotten that deal, and likely even more. When you are dealing with players who manage their millions poorly vs owners with billions who know how to manage theirs well? It's easy to win, each and every time. The majority on NFL players who don't manage their assets well ruin it for the few that do during these negotiations. Broke players will clamor to agree to any deal that gets them that next paycheck that they live from because they handle their money so poorly.
2. He's coasted off of that one success ever since. Every single thing the man has touched since then has been terrible. And it has ultimately cost the NFL far more than his negotiations of the CBA evernought the,. But again, they're greedy and short-sighted too, and they only see the short term gain vs the players vsthe long term loss of Goodell's bungling everything else.

you do realize that goodell represents what the owners want. he is the administrator and the guy to take public punches and ridicule on behalf of owners. he doesn't decide anything by himself. there is a committee for everything and the owners decide....

gooddell can't change officiating rules all by himself. there is a competition committee which includes owners and coaches and they take input from others and they make decisions.

and gooddell is hired by the owners to represent them. he can't do anything outside of what he is allowed to do by the owners. NBA is different and has different challenges. NBA is based on its stars. where NFL is based on its brand. no one player in the NFL is bigger than the league...its not the same in NBA, where the league's popularity and everything surrounding it is controlled and directly impacted by a few players, like james, curry and couple of others. NBA has to cater to their stars...which actually has deteriorated the product

Jones own backroom comments had him sounding that way and I'm sure it pissed a ton of other owners off. They all have egos and none of them want to hear a guy talking like he's above them.

But the fact was that Jones was right and the whole Elliott railroad job was a disgrace and a black eye for the league. And Joe Goodell, and a reactive league have once again shifted things 180 degrees in the other direction and still can't figure out how to handle player discipline.

It was just the timing of it. Goodell had been struggling with domestic violence issues and these silly witchhunt investigations for years , and Jerry never said anything until it was his guy. His motives were completely transparent.
