Arctic - A very good performance by Mads Mikkelsen (maybe an Oscar contender, but it's early in the year and those movies tend to get forgotten), but otherwise there's not much here that we haven't seen in other survival movies based in cold areas. Not a bad way to spend an hour and 40 minutes, though.

Sometimes the Academy will nominate early run movies for Best Picture. Black Panther is an example.

In my opinion, actors' and actresses' early very good-to-great performances get screwed over due to a combination of the limited number of Oscar slots and the quantity of performances that are squeezed in at the end of the year just before the nominations are assigned.

The voters will continue nominating performances as they see fit but I would not mind seeing the Academy adopt the Golden Globes' practice and expand the slots to at least 10 for Best Actor and Actress and supporting awards. Some actors will still get snubbed but a few more would get recognized by the Academy with more available nominations.

I would prefer they just dump it all, it's not a fair competition. How can anyone compare performances of an actor with a different writer, director and supporting cast? And comedies totally get the shaft and are not considered "serious contenders".

I feel the same way about the Grammy's, it is art and art is subjective.

I wonder if getting rid of awards for great acting would affect the performances and the effort the actors give.

According to the Academy, members are "...limited to film artists working in the production of theatrically-released motion pictures. The Academy has 17 branches, for the crafts ranging from Actors to Writers, and two categories, Members-at-Large and Associates to accommodate individuals who work in motion picture production but do not fit into one of the branches."

Basically, the Academy believes they have "qualified" judges. Even though I frequently question their summary judgments, I believe the Academy could make a good argument (right or wrong) they can fairly discern what qualifies as 'best'. I do agree strongly on the Academy's seemingly obvious bias against comedies. As I have mentioned in the past, I believe the Golden Globes award setup is better suited for more universal recognition by allotting two separate categories--one for drama and the other for musical or comedy--for best motion picture, actor, actress, etc.

I mostly agree about the subjectivity of musical appreciation though. That is why I am not setting a foot inside a discussion about the Grammys. :muttley:

In my opinion, the absence of awards would not impact quality of acting work. Serious direction would continue upholding the standard. Plus, the best actors and actresses are fundamentally self-motivated and would not crap on projects they believe in.

I'm not sure how much ego plays a part in many (not all, obviously) actors' motivation in giving a realistic, honest performance. I can see where one would have to put aside his ego, to completely get into a character, but there are definitely some big egos in Hollywood.

I agree. I have no interest whatsoever in their elitist snobfest. And I I know their bungling is catching up to them as they can't even manage the process of a host at this point.

They strive to go against what the masses like anyway, so why should the masses pay attention to what they think?

I don't think so. At the end of the day, they do this for a living, not for trophies on the mantle.

Big egos can be found throughout all societies around the world. It is just those who make a living in front of cameras that have theirs exposed more often than most.

For the most part, I think actors and actresses have always considered themselves as professionals no different from any other working in industries outside of entertainment. However, I do also believe the projects they work on are the main factors that brings out the best in performers. A substandard or unmotivated director will not push actors strongly enough. A crappy script can be only improved upon so much by performance.

I think actors and actresses do deliver their best work in most situations though. Awards simply feed their vanity, just as it does for other people too.

You could be right, but I find it easy to believe that many of the people with such a strong desire to be in the public eye are looking for recognition.

Good point. Then again every person does not share the same career ambitions. I have been in the healthcare industry for over three decades and in close contact with numerous physicians. My experience with doctors has been that some have as large an ego as many of the acting celebrities that we are accustomed to seeing on the big or small screen and just as vain. However, they do not normally seek large scale attention that actors and actress do in their careers.

Lego Movie 2. 6.5 out of 10

Enjoyable watch. But very below the original, which to me was exceptional.

Lego Movie 2 had some good laughs, but to often you are trying to figure out whats actually going on. Very fast paced, too fast like Lego Batman. However, Lego Batman you werent getting lost on plot elements because of pacing like Lego 2.

Not having seen the movie, it doesn't sound good for someone to admit being lost in a Lego movie.

I do recommend the first one. Excellent. Almost Toy Story quality
If the opportunity presents itself, I will. I watched one last week, Ninjago, I think it was called. Meh . There were a few semi funny parts, but mostly a waste of time.
