It’s been a good roster that has almost always had clear roster holes.

They could have had one of the best rosters in football if they had a different, more calculated approach to FA by using the middle tier of FAs between the high priced players and the bargain bin slop they seem to love despite is mostly resulting in them signing very few good players.

Every roster almost always has clear roster holes. It's been one of the best rosters over the last 10 years. The number of All-Pros and Pro-Bowlers over that span supports that statement.

The company line says they prefer to save their cap space for their own players. It worked out last year when they made Zack Martin the highest paid guard in the game.

The last "big name" free agent the Cowboys went out and got was CB Brandon Carr in 2012, and he was just a solid guy. Not really worth the investment, but not quite a bust.

The only other teams that have historically "sat out" free agency (for the most part) have been the Packers and Colts. Green Bay actually spent big on some guys last year (Jimmy Graham, Muhammed Wilkerson) and had a poor season.

The hard part is watching the Cowboys sit on their hands. But I'd rather say "no thanks" to a guy like Landon Collins if it means keeping Amari Cooper or Jaylon Smith down the road.
I find your use of common sense much nicer than the typical emo posting.

Yet we've had one of the best rosters in the league over that span. Remember when everyone was patting the Giants on the back for all the money they paid Veron and Snacks and Jenkins? How did that work out for them?

We do good thru the draft. Was just saying this earlier.

Honestly hate this FO. All other teams and especially NFCE teams continually make their teams better every year.

Yet we do nothing and actually have disgruntled players at this point because we’re willing to extend a an average QB a year early when our war daddy here is getting pissed. Nice FO work I tell ya.

Meh. Dak is much more important to this team than Tank. That's the way of the NFL. Don't have a QB, you have no chance to win. QBs are always going to be taken care of first.

We've been the best team in the division over the last decade, outside of Philly's magical year. We've won the division 4 of the last 10 years, more than any other team, and more than the Skins and Giants combined.

Dude...

Agree that a QB is vital to a team’s success and I have no problem extending Dak but why now? He has one more year and see how he does under a new OC.

----day 2 and 3 of free agency is where the real gems are signed. Lets see where we stand as of weds.

Like Nolan Carroll?

Jerry gets zero satisfaction out of winning with top FA's, because he didn't draft them.....just like he would get zero satisfaction out of winning with a Top 5 HC.

Again, nothing more than taking matters to the extreme. Have you heard of balance? Just because of being burned by Carr in 2012, now you vow to never sign another free agent worth anything? Every season should be different and not taking the same exact approach every year.

Our fans think every single player ever born is "overrated" and "overpaid" that is signed in free agency. Go bring up the old posts about what the Eagles were doing in 2017 and see how so many of our fans thought they were ignorant. They were proactive and it paid off. They found the right balance of drafting, signing their own and signing free agents.

Signing your own means nothing if your own just aren't that great.

Sure and those NFCE titles have equated to nothing. I see where they’re coming from by signing from within but even that doesn’t seem to be working. Disgruntled players here, suspended players there.

Tank, jaylon, vander each, byron jones, chido, jourdan lewis, et. Al., suggest we haven't solely invested in the o-line the last few years. And those who don't see just how good of a job stephen's been doing just aren't getting it.

Have we had the parts to win and Garrett isn't good enough? Or have we not have the parts to win? I don't think we can have it both ways.

We were also hurt by Romo's injuries piling up, which might have cost us during our best window.

But the roster has been very good for a long time now.

They really don't seem to want proven players from other teams. You would think that they would have learned from the success they had getting Amari Cooper last season. Everyone was telling them that we didn't have a number one receiver and Jerry kept saying we like who we have. When the front office finally realized that everyone else was right, then they pulled the trigger on Cooper. The Rams went all in on free agency last season and you can see where it got them. And they are still set up for the next couple of years with Goff under a rookie contract.

Stephen and Jerry Jones are still trying to prove to the world that they are "football" guys. So much so that they have resorted to trying to fool the rest of the football world.

The reason the Cowboys have be inactive during free agency the last 5 years or so is because it gives the illusion that they are being calculated, smart, conservative, rational and financially responsible when in actuality they just don't know how to build a team using the draft and free agency. They Jones's have figured that since they don't know how to evaluate players from other teams then they'll just pass on them and saying that the player price was too high which allows them not to make on a player and run the risk of being ridiculed.

The problem with this is that you never sign anyone of value.
Jerry IS a football guy.
Played or been around the sport his whole life. Probably moreso than any other owner.

Should he have also been a GM?

Uh, no.
