I think that situation is more common than you think, but it also sets up a scenario where you are paying these guys max money, but you're not doing anything to maximize on it. It turns into a Romo situation or Witten situation (before he came back) where you have these max-pay players and nothing really to show for it because you didn't take the steps necessary to win.

Frankly, I'd trade a Super Bowl for not being able to pay 3 or 4 guys max money and having to start the rebuilding process all over again. Because being just good enough to make the playoffs year after year isn't good enough.
I would too but the cycle makes no sense. You would let 3 or 4 guys go in favor of free agency so you sign inferior players?

We're talking difference makers. Signing Jeffrey helped the Eagles win the Super Bowl. It isn't like they went out and signed Allen Hurns to be one of their top receivers.
Jeffrey’s prior to getting him was a after thought and injury prone. That’s why the Bears let him go.

2 yr 16 million/7 million guaranteed.

Literally came up with that contract in 3 seconds.

The front office has it easy.

Yet he has to want that. Doesn't matter what you come up with. It's not only on them, but the agent too their trying to get as much as they can.

Alshon Jeffrey was probably the big signing for Philly in 2017 that helped the Eagles get over the top. (Nick Foles might have been more important ultimately, but I wouldn't have considered him a big signing.) Essentially, one difference maker made a huge difference.

The Rams got good production for Suh, but probably more important were trades they made for Marcus Peters and Aqib Talib. Those were difference makers that helped put them over the top.

The list for the Patriots is extensive over the years, but you can feel free to look them up if you need to know.
Yeah but the Rams ultimately got to where they were because it McVey. They would’ve got there without wasting that money on Peters and Suh. And same goes for the Pats. Superior coaching.

Eagirls just got lucky. I’m not using them as a blueprint to how to win in this league. They were just one of those teams that got lucky at the right time.

You shouldn’t build your roster on unreliable players... and Berry has proven to be exactly that.

Not sure where you are getting that.

I sign a couple of best-at-their-position free agents to try to win a Super Bowl now. If that means (which I don't think it does) that I can't sign one or two of our own free agents a couple of years from now, then so be it.

It's all about winning the big game for me. Dallas is trying to play the long game to get there when the long game doesn't exist anymore. It's all about striking now.

I am anxious to see how boy-genius, McVey handles DC's doing to him what Big Bill did going forward on the reg.
Time to take the training wheels off ol' What's-His-Name to do some decision-making.

Good luck. We'll see how that goes.

I won't argue the point on coaching. We've got what we've got, which makes talent even more important because we get no upperhand from coaching. There have been a lot of one-and-done Super Bowl teams since the salary cap went into effect, so ultimately, if you think you have key pieces in place, you have to go for it.

I hope like hell we sign him.

He's better than Heath and his leadership skills are unquestioned. Remember how Woodson helped Roy early in his career? Eric could do the same. He was beloved in Kansas City and we could use him if nothing else to stabilize the position.

If Garrett is really all about culture - here's your guy.
He doesn’t even play Heath’s position.

I’ll get excited or angry once we sign him.

We get to caught up in the what if’s and are they?

I’d rather spend my time in the McElroy, Covington and Hyder threads!

That’s what I’m saying. You are saying you’d let two of your own free agents go in favor of getting two other guys in free agency. That makes no sense and it doesn’t make a winner. No team gets rid of their best players in favor of a free agent and it’s proven to win.

Hopefully he falls on his face. Not a fan of his or his team. But offensively he did a lot for that team even when they lost Cooper Kupp. Got exposed in the playoffs though.

That's why he received a one-year deal, but it was an expensive one-year deal because of the difference-making possibility. It would be the equivalent of us having signed Earl Thomas this offseason. The thought is he's too old or injury prone, but maybe he's also the piece that puts us over the top.

Maybe Berry will be a cheaper version of that, but I seriously doubt he signs here because it doesn't fit the current FA philosophy. I'd like to see it because I'd rather take a chance on change than stick with the status quo, but the Joneses would have to take at least somewhat of a risk (with there being a good chance that they would be taking that risk on the wrong FA safety).

He will want more than 1 million. So he’s pricing himself out of our range. He’s coming for the free dinner and a free family vacation to Texas lol

OK, maybe you don't get the part where we add those difference-making FAs now to the team we have now, and lose our own FAs later after we've taken our best shot at winning the Super Bowl.

We would be not losing anyone now, just maybe we're not giving Dak and Elliott extensions yet. And when we did give them extensions, maybe we let a Byron Jones or La'el Collins walk in FA instead.

Again, I don't think that's necessary. The way some fret over the salary cap is so overblown. But if it came down to taking a shot at winning it all now or retaining some players we'd lose a year or two from now, I'd take the shot every time.

It's his first visit, so I guess he needs a low price set for his services before he fields legitimate offers.
