Is Cobb an upgrade over Beasley?

As far as playing from the slot, it might be close at this point. But Beasley can't play out wide well like Cobb can. And blocking? Lol.
With Cobb being able to play outside you can move Cooper in the slot to exploit matchups more often as well.
Our coaching staff to this point doesn't really like to do that though...

What makes some of you automatically disregard specific plays/games or in this case years?

Since those years are gone can you take out Beasley's best two years and tell us who was better?
Considering Cobb’s best years were 5 years ago, Beasley is the better player now.

Said it a few days ago. This signing could mean the end of Hurns.

At the very least his bloated salary.

That's my assumption as well. On any level, there's no valid reason why Hurns should cost $6.5 million in 2019 as your 4th receiver.

It is not even the cost.

What exactly would Hurns do?

This is just my opinion, but it looks to me like they want to add versatility to the mix, and guys that can not only play outside but in the slot as well. If you run Hurns, Gallup, and Cooper out there, you have two of the three that can line up in the slot. When Beasley was on the field, you knew where he would line up and therefore it made things easier to defend. Guys like Hurns, Cobb, and Austin bring versatility and more flexibility to an offense in my opinion.

Just once, I'd love to see Austin come in as the single back, and then motion out to receiver and just fly down the field as fast as he can. I don't even care if he catches the ball or not, just to scare the crap out of a defense and show them something other than the "same old, same old" we've been running for years.

If I could get Beasley for the same money as Cobb I would surely take Beasley. I have never seen a WR age as quickly as Cobb! The only answer I can think of is injuries and hits have taken its toll on him.

And that's mentioned repeatedly in Bob McGinn's season review reports on him, about how beat up he's become year after year.

On what basis is Beasley better then Cobb?

Cobb is a better route runner and blocker then Beasley will ever be. Understand that injuries limited Cobb the last couple of seasons, and the emergence of Adams took away his touches. Rodgers was injured the past two seasons which also impacted Cobb's stats.

At 29 years old, Cobb definitely has the potential to be a better weapon for Dak then Beasley ever was. Remember Beasley's best season came in Witten's last season prior to retirement. Having 2 short options opens up the defense. Last season Beasley wasn't targeted as much because he was covered more then not. Cobb to me is a better receiver both short and stretching the field. His yards after a catch far outweigh Beasley's over his career.

In the end only time will tell if this signing will be a good one. But all signs point to this being a better signing $$$ wise and skill wise for the Cowboys

Beasley is better at getting open and puts up better numbers with a far less QB.

Beasley is almost unguardable in a short area of space 1 on 1. If you blitz he'll be open.

My big concern with Cobb is the past injuries. He has dealt a lot with Hamstring injuries in recent past which to me is a concern. We saw it with Miles Austin who year after year was dealing with Hamstring issues. Positive I love the fact Cobb is not strictly a slot man, he is very capable of playing on the outside as well. For me the key is Cobb remaining healthy if he can do that then I think he can be a very productive player on this team.

Cobb is a better player and much more versatile. His salary and attitude are much better than Beasley, the question is his health.

If you asked before FA started which player you wanted out of these three:

Beasley at 15 Milliion guaranteed
Golden Tate at 23 Million guaranteed
Randall Cobb at 5 Million guaranteed.

The answer would be a slam dunk vote for Cobb.

Begs the question of why Cobb got 1/3 to 1/4 of the going rate, doesn't it?

Injuries and three years of decreased productivity had an awful lot to do with it. As well as the fact that those decreased numbers cam while playing with arguably the best passer in the league.

There are certainly some pluses to the Cobb vs Beasley signing, but if people are big honest, there are some negatives as well.

Cole caught 65 passes in 2018.

Will Cobb even catch half that ?!?!

His role will be different than Beasleys last year. Will be hard to compare.

Cooper will be here the whole year, Gallup should see more targets, O-Line should be healthier so we will run more.

does it matter? Beas left for a bloated overpaid contract.. he was not getting that for being a 4th option for us , so Cobb is simply depth NOT truly replacing Bease, IMO they will concentrate on using TEs witten and other for those chain movers this season and add Gallup sophomore season ad AMari fully integrated, we dont need that much help at WR..id argue its one of the last positions we need help on.. really Cobb is insurance fort an injury and depth say if Hurns cant make it back and is cut.. replacing your 2rd or 4th [passing target is not that hard if you have two starters who will produce..as a run first team, theres limited targets anyway

It remains to be seen if Cobb is an upgrade over Beasley, but I like the contract value. I am curious how he was available for $5m on a one year deal if he can still play. May be able to get a comp pick out of him next year if he can play.

I am also curious what it costs to cut him and move on if he gets bumped off the roster at roster cutdowns.

Coon seems like a decent risk vs reward option.

Even if Cobb isn't an upgrade over Beasley, I think Cedrick Wilson might easily make up for any difference, assuming one would exist. I believe Cobb should likely do well enough to distinguish himself, in any event, however. He's more of a physical presence than the 5-8, 175-lb Beasley, though, so there's that. Chances are, he'll block better, if anything. After all, he's 2 inches taller and heavier, at 198. ;)

NFL.com's Cynthia Frelund wrote an article which include a segment on Beasley and third down conversions last season. Beas had a very poor first down conversion rate on third down plays.

3) Cole Beasley, WR, Buffalo Bills

For a 5-8 slot receiver who turns 30 next month, $29 million over four years (with $14.4 million guaranteed) could be a bit too rich, relative to projected output. Last season as a Cowboy, only 68 percent of Beasley's third-down receptions netted first downs. This ranked 46th among 58 wide receivers with at least 20 third-down targets. His career highs in yards (833 in 2016) and touchdowns (five in 2015 and '16) don't exactly jump off the page, either. In 2018, the Bills only managed 174.6 passing yards per game (31st), while their leading receiver, Zay Jones, amassed just 652 yards. Beasley fills a need as a guy who can rack up higher-probability, short passes, and does improve second-year quarterback Josh Allen's arsenal of options. However, at $7.25 million per year -- which is 32nd among all receivers (not just slot) -- expectations for Beasley seem a lot higher than his likely production will be.
