Helping the team win.

Win what? I don't know of any game saving or game winning fumble recovery, int, or sack that he did. He got a few sacks, big deal, no way to prove somebody else couldn't have gotten them.

Look, you think he has value, I don't. You think the team should keep him around based purely on talent and hope. I commend you for having hope.

I think he's had enough chances and he doesn't have value, because he's PROVEN he's not able to stay clean. That's a FACT. He's been suspended FOUR times. After that many, the chances he can stay clean are poor, at best.

Can't win titles based on hope, at some point you need players on the field, and Gregory's failed the Cowboys far, far too many times.

I would love to be wrong, and he gets to come back and play several seasons and be a starter and/or significant contributor to the team. The team apparently intends to keep him around for years until he's too old to play or is suspended permanently or the league says it's okay to smoke pot. I have no say in the matter, only posting my opinion.

Only time will tell if you and the Cowboys are right, or I and other detractors are right. We'll never agree, and that's cool...

so when NE picks up these kinds of players, most recently Gordon who quit on them, I guess they are smarter? all teams do this and paper is paper he can easily be cut without pay and no real risk for the Cowboys IF its for suspensions etc..maybe they have real reason and im trusting billion dollar corporation and the people Jerry was in meeting with that said do this for whatever reason then a bunch of internet GMs that think they have a clue abut running professional sports team..

It is one thing to give a guy another chance but once that player shows no change in how they conduct their lives a team has an obligation to 52 other players to cut the problem loose. If this was Gregory 1st issue I would say give him a chance and I did. When he failed at the combine I was willing to give him a chance. When he failed and was forced to miss time I gave him a chance but then after that the other missed test and failed test, no I think Cowboys have been more than fair with him and yet he continues to let this team down. He should be cut loose

The tea leaves either indicate that the team believes Gregory will play, or they are just hoping against hope. Let's hope as fans that it's the former and not the latter.
I've always liked Randy Gregory, even though I joke about his puff, puff, pass rush tendencies.
If he could stay off pot, I'm convinced he could be a great player in this league. But if he could, he likely wouldn't be on the Cowboys roster.
After this last violation, I could understand if fans and even the Cowboys were done with him. But I aint mad at the Cowboys if they're willing to be patient with him.

He had 40 pressures last year on limited snaps. That's helping the team win whether you recognize that or not is not my issue.

So you agree this was a good move. Awesome.

No I think addressing the position with a serious player is the right move not waiting on some idiot to come off the suspension list. I would have loved seeing Dallas give Quinn a 3 year deal and cut this waste of a player off this team once and for all. I'm tired of it, I'm tired of wondering who we will have to find to take over for Gregory because he is too stupid

should and just letting the cowboys FO do what they like with the 5 billion dollar franchise they built, im betting they have plan and its a lot lower risk then you think..we should worry more about football then contracts and this type of BS , as fans its just about the season and wins and losses but the SM frenzy and wild media speculation and intrusion has lifted way too many blinds and let fan FEEL and Think they can do better job given all this backroom information.. We DO NOT..

I'm going to blow your mind here.

There is, in fact, middle ground between one of the best players at the position ever(Haley) and a JAG. CRAZY I KNOW!!!!
Gregory isn't JAG.

28 games. 7 sacks, 45 tackles, 1 fumble recovery.

That's one sack for every 4 games, 1.6 tackles per game. Not JAG, I agree, but not much better...

NE takes chances on players for sure. They just don’t continue giving chance after chance after chance to the same guy.
whats the difference????

they KNEW Gordons history given 15 chances in CLE, so they in fact did the same thing regardless of it was for one season.. they signed guy with history of failed chances..they do it a lot..

It is not about the contract it is keeping players who can't be counted on. This is a football team not a fricken rehab center or halfway house. Gregory has been given ample chances only to screw this team over and being put in a situation where we must again address the DE spot. Had he stayed clean good chance we are not having to once again look for a replacement for him.

The Cowboys paid 2013 2nd round pick Gavin Escobar $4,210,496 and got much less production for Escobar than Gregory has already produced.

First of all, Escobar played in 62 games in 4 seasons, or 15.5 a year. Gregory has played in 28 games in 3 years, average 9.33 a year.

You have to see what a player can do before you release him, so Escobar's first couple of years you don't know what you have, and you have to pay to see what you've got.

So you can't compare the two just by the money they got...

Interrupted by sustained periods of suspensions.

Never was able to build any consistency because he really hasn't be prepared to play a full season, which includes being held out of OTAs and training camps.
Imagine if he had the benefit of a full season of training and playing. Do you think he'd be simply average with those stats?
I can understand the skepticism. Yes, he has been VERY unreliable, and even that is an understatement.
But the talent is there; otherwise, the Cowboys would have cut him long time ago.
And, even though I have no way to prove this, had Randy Gregory not been suspended in 2016 season, I'm convinced we would have beaten Green Bay in the playoffs.
We needed a speedy DE who could track down Aaron Rodgers. Gregory would have been that DE. He would have harassed Rodgers all day long.
But we don't have an alternate reality crystal ball. So mine is mere speculation. Sigh.

That's like giving him nothing as far as the cap goes, so I don't see it as a bad move. Even if he does miss this season, it locks him in for 2020 when Quinn probably heads off for better pay. Maybe in 2020, we can get another season out of Gregory if we can't find a longer-term replacement in the meantime for when he's suspended again. I'd rather at least have him as a possible option while working toward what to do in the worst-case scenario with him.

You worry too much.

Roll one and relax.

Randy does.

What I do not understand is..

Randy can go to Colorado to a dispensary there and buy smoke with no THC in it.

Why has he not done that?

And what did it get them? Gordon played in 11 games and had 3 tds. Wasn't around for the playoffs. To me he wasn't worth it either...

Imagine if he had the benefit of a full season of training and playing.

That's the problem, we have only "imagining" to go on. Can't build a team on that.

While it's a fact he's been unreliable due to suspensions.

Live in a fantasy world if you want, I can't do that...
