Not sure I agree.....
Coop is will make $13.9M this season. 2019 franchise for WRs is $16.7M. OBJ is the highest paid WRs at $18M followed by AB and about 7 players making $15 to high $16M. As you can see the difference between the franchise tag and highest paid WR (OBJ) is just under $2M. So this position has probably hit its salary ceiling range for next 2-3 years at $16-18M. Since Coop is already on the books at $14M ( 13.9 ) it'll only cost us about $3M to tag him for 2020.

Bottom line......if we are looking ahead at Coop contract, all we have do is save 2020 tag and budget approx an additional $3m and he's locked down for the next 2 years. Even when time to sign him 2021, $17M range would make him the 2nd highest paid WR behind OBJ's $18M.

But Dak's numbers almost certainly going one direction with no ceiling the longer we wait ......^^^^^^.

Except that the Falcons are working on a new extension for Julio and will most likely top what OBJ is making. Michael Thomas also has one year left on his contract and his new deal will most likely top OBJs as well. The Chiefs were working on a "record setting" deal with Tyreek Hill, before the domestic troubles a few weeks ago. If you haven't noticed prices keep going up, they do not reduce or level out, expect Coopers deal to be in the $18-20 million range. Cooper may be quiet and reserved, but his agent is not and has had no problem in instructing his clients to sit out to wait for a deal. He uses the same agent as Mack, and has other clients that have sat out as well. They have the leverage since we used a 1st rd pick for him, trying to get a deal sooner than later is a better plan with Cooper.

Trying to wait until 2021 is a bad idea, Julio and Thomas would have already had new contracts with other notable WRs due to be FA after the 2020 season including Thelien, JuJu, Keenan Allen, Golladay, Mike Williams, Kupp.... By that time, Coop's price will easily be north of $20 million.

If Dak led the Cowboys to a SB win in 2019, they'll still be fans on this board that would want to move on from him and they'll point to Trent Dilfer and Brad Johnson who also won SB's.

So true......in fact, I said in a thread last week he'll probably have two win 2 SBs to quiet all critics and even that may not be enough.

Play out the season on his current deal and if he has a great year and you have to pay more than you would now, so be it.

It's the safer, smarter play.

Or Franchise him...and trade him. I don't ever want to see another 100 million dollar deal for a QB. It's a franchise killer.

You would rather wait until he's a free agent and either have to pay him then or franchise him for 28+M for one season? Had we re-signed DLaw last year we probably could have gotten him cheaper. If Dak has a productive 2019 season which is very likely with another year of experience under his belt along with our improved receiving corp, his price tag is going to go way up. It would be better to try and work something out now, rather than possibly have to pay him 30+M after a big 2019 season. Look how much he improved with the addition of Cooper last season. He put up around 2200 yards the last 8 games of the season. Gallup is only going to get better in year two and with the addition of Cobb and Witten, Dak's numbers could go way up and so will his contract demands.

Productive 2019??? what does that even mean???
Are we talking about empty numbers, the last guy had those, is Dak a top ten QB?? - No he is NOT, is he a top twenty, yeah barely, he's a bus driving system quarterback that has shown, unless he has a lot of pieces around him, he just can't get it done....can't have an all Madden team to win championships..I like Dak, he's a consummate professional and a leader but has shown poor mechanics, too many times he misses wide open receivers or holds on to the ball far too long.....so no I'm in no rush to give Dak a long term deal, he needs to prove he deserves a long term deal

Cooper needs to be signed next. Dak can wait until after next season.

Just because he said that he wants Dak done before the season doesn't necessarily mean that Cooper can't get done either imo. If it's true that extending Cooper can give us cap space, then that is what I think will still happen next. We will need all the space we can get, as stated, to get Dak and Zeke done. Cooper can help us there, if this is the case.

Even inept-Stephen knows that this bum needs an all-star cast around him to win. But dudes on this site are ok with him getting with $30m a year

I don’t get it ??

I think you are confusing being ok with whatever they sign him for vs there isn’t a dang thing ANY OF US can do about it if we aren’t .
Why must so many fans get so passionate about Daks next contract one way or another .. because YOU don’t like Dak , will have absolutely no bearing on what the ownership pays him .. I don’t recall seeing really anyone saying oh man I hope they pay him 26-30 million per year ? Most have said he will get the going market rate for a franchise qb because the organization NOT the fanbase believe he is a franchise qb . The sooner we all accept and move on from that the better .. but hey god bless all who just refuse to do so ... your constant reminding how much you and others disagree with Dak being the starting qb let alone getting a big payday does not mean jack to ownerships decisions and quite frankly it’s just a lesson in futility

Because Romo actually tried to be an NFL QB.

Outside of this fan bubble nobody would ever compare Prescott and his semi-pro skills with Romo.
We’re such a desperate fan base for an Elite QB. We’re deprived in the front office, coaching staff and most critical position. Amazing we’re competitive at all.

But out of those three areas of concern QB might not be our biggest weakness. Hard to say but why the odds are against us. Lol
