Yeah Im not sure how often he's played 1T but I bet @xwalker could give us an accurate answer.

It seemed to me that was the beginning of his progress halting. I would not be suprised at all if our coaches have hurt his potential play by plugging him into the wrong position/assignments. B Jones proves to be a great example of unidentified talent.

There are basically 3 ways they use 1-tech/3-tech DTs.

1-tech/3-tech situations
1. Standard 1-tech and 3-tech when they expect run.

2. Two 3-techs in obvious passing situations.

3. A 1-tech and 3-tech when it's somewhat likely to be a pass. I call it 50 percent chance or better for a pass (i.e. 50/50 pass/run).

Collins
2016 3-tech

2017 More 1-tech than 3-tech due to both 1-techs getting injured.

2018 Primarily 3-tech but also 1-tech in 50/50 pass/run situations.

In 2018:
High Probability Run
Woods at 1-tech

High Probability Pass
Collins and Crawford both as 3-techs.

50/50 type pass/run situations
1-tech could be any of:
Woods
Collins
Ross
Reid

I wouldn't quite call him the next Tank, but Collins looked really good at the end of this last season. He was holding up really well against the run, which has long been his kryptonite.

Three straight years with broken feet is a bad sign, but if he can stay healthy then I think there is some really strong late-bloomer potential.

IMO Maliek is like Tank. The only thing that has really been able to slow the growth of the kid is injuries. I am expecting a break out season this year. Thoughts?
He is a very good 3-tech DT but he has played through an injury issue in the majority of games he has played in the NFL.

May 2016
Broken Right Foot

2017 Season
Played with a stress fracture in his Left Foot

May 2018
Foot Surgery - Fractured 5th Metatarsal

2018 Games 3, 4, 5
Missed these games with a knee injury.

Despite all of the injuries, he has only missed 3 of 51 games.

That is something. I am hoping he gives us a little something to at least make us think about resigning. Injuries IMO is what is holding him back.

Collins did not play 50% 1tech

Woods and Ross were 1techs
woods 57% snaps played
Ross 24% snaps played

That means Collins couldnt have played more than 29% of his snaps at 1tech

Collins has been dealing with injuries, and he's just inconsistent. He is not going to get the snap counts he got at 3tech in 2019 because basically Crawford will be the starting 3tech and Collins is going back to being a backup. Think even his snaps will get further reduced with Covington and Kerry taking snaps aswell. They gave collins 3 yrs and he just cant be relied upon.

It will be hard for him to break out in his contract year. The Cowboys will be looking to develop players they have under contract in future seasons.

PFF evaluated him lower than Ross, and Woods. Even Taco, who I think will be getting interior rush snaps this year. They are the future.

And if they want pass rush performance, they'll be going with Crawford.

It's just hard to see Collins getting the snaps to break out, particularly as a pass rusher.

In a related note, is Crawford gonna gain weight to play the 3T this year? Talk about a YoYo for that guy, gaining, losing weight...etc.

Try reading again. Get help if needed.

I didn't say anything about Collins playing 50% of the snaps.

My reference to 50% was unrelated to snap counts.

Yeah Collins isnt very good. He will sneak in a sack here and there but he just doesnt have it at 3tech. Its always his foot or his knee. Bad issues for a DT

Please (everyone) quit believing the PFF ratings for NFL players.

They pay bloggers to "grade film" which is actually just broadcast video.

M.Collins could show up in shorts and sandals and be better than Daniel Ross in his best game.

Injuries have led to a decrease in snaps IMO due to lack of conditioning I think. Just like with it was hard for me to forget that he had a 8 sack season it is hard for me to forget that Collins had a 5 sack season.

He's talented to some extent but his probability of staying healthy doesn't encourage me in the least.

I wouldn't be overly surprised at all to see Christian Covington overtake him to win his spot at 3-tech.

If you don't like PFF look at the stats. Collins just didn't produce as well as other guys, and eyeballing snap count, his production per snap would make him look even worse.

And we run two 3 tech all the time as far as body size. Not sure how large Woods is. Guessing him and Collins barely break the 300 range.

The best I can say for Collins is that he should be better *if* he can get and stay healthy. Could happen.

He's even a guy they should consider extending with a Church like contract, *if* they think he'll have a lot more production healthy.

Conditioning and health probably affected his play, but he got almost 50% snaps last year. Our DTs don't get much higher than 60% fully healthy.

Collins could have a lot more if he can stay healthy. But I don't see him getting the snaps this year unless he's extended, which they should think about if they think that Collins really does have a lot more.

He is an oft injuries rotation piece who plays through injuries. He is not Yannik from Jacksonville who is the real steal of the draft as someone has stated before.

Based on his injury history, I expect more injuries.
