I don't get criticism of the Zeke pick. He was the best player in the draft and they got him at the fourth pick, and it was a position of need. They got an elite player who was both BPA and a critical need.

Gotta take the long view. QBs are playing and productive for 15 years and more these days. CBs last. DEs. Olinemen. With RBs, you're hoping for 6.

Jaylon Smith looks like he's gong to be every bit the monster they projected him to be before the injury. I get it that he brought nothing to the table in 2016 when we needed it. But I'd redshirt my second round pick every year if it netted a generational talent.

I know this has been a hot topic for a couple years now. This is the confirmation we’ve been waiting for regarding his NFI to IR rookie season. He did not accrue that season towards FA.

This was much debated here a year or two ago.

Some of us believed that they would get an extra year of control with Jaylon because he didn't play at all as a rookie.

Comparing 2 players from the 2016 draft:

Jaylon - Restricted Free Agent in 2020.

Maliek Collins - Unrestricted Free Agent in 2020.

So? You know who else would have been great last season? Myles Jack, or Deion Jones,. All guys taken in the second round who could have helped in 2016 too, when we had Justin Durant and Andrew Gachkar taking regular snaps.

They made a pick at 4 to win right now, and a pick at 34 to win later. It's dumb logic, and the logic is worse at 34 because you had an old, banged up QB.

I felt that way at the time. But it’s water under the bridge. Time to move on and just be ecstatic we have him for an extra year.

Still dumb to take Zeke at 4 and then a guy who wasn't going to play for a year at 36.

In a vacuum it's a fine pick, but relative to....the entire rest of the team, it was dumb.
Just your opinion. The rest of the NFL would kill to have both of them.

Luv me sum Stephen.

This is one of the reasons why taking injured players who will miss a year at a steep discount is a great deal. The other is that grownups can defer gratification.

We didn't miss a year with Jaylon. We deferred a year. Jaylon didn't accrue a league year in his rookie reason. It was a redshirt year.

And for being grownup and willing to defer gratification, we got a consensus top 5 player in the top of the 2nd.

Similarly with Gregory. When you're suspended, you don't accrue games toward a league year. Gregory only has 2 accrued seasons. And soon enough, the league (and probably the country) will change it's position on pot, and Gregory won't even have an issue, and we'll have a consensus top ten player for a bottom of the 2nd pick.

Granted that they both had extra risk beyond the delay, risk that they never come back at all, and that was also part of the risk we took to get our discount.

But so many mistakenly treat *deferred* years as if they are *lost* years. Once you realize that's not the case, picks discounted only for deferred gratification an arbitrage opportunity in a win now league where most other GMs aren't willing to defer gratification. It's statistically free money in the street.

EDIT: Forgot to mention - Giggity! There has been a question for years now whether the team screwed up and let Jaylon accrue a league year his rookie season while never playing a snap. I'm glad they didn't make that mistake.
This is a smart man. ^

That basically seals it that the choice to draft him was a success no matter what way you look at it.
Kid woulda been top 3-5 pick. We took a chance. Had a lot said about it but kid has the potential to be defensive player of the year

The logic is never dumb when you come out of a draft with a top-5 talent in the second round who becomes an all pro.

You're coming off like a bitter, scorned ex here. Get over it. Give the FO credit for what they DID do instead of bashing them for what they could've.

Yeah, we've had some discussion about this. Not unexpected.

He'll get a first round tender. About $4.5-4.6 million or so next year.

A team can still offer him a contract if they're willing to give up a first. We have the rights to match. So not completely out of the woods, as that's a possibility. If he turns into a monster, we may be giving him a contract anyway, or an extra pick. (Legitimate discussion there with LVE improving)

Will be interesting to see how it plays out. Looking forward to seeing him this year

I would give Jaylon the 1st and 3rd tender. Just to be safe.

Unless the front office wants to try and bait a team into giving up their first. Which I don’t think I would want anyway.

Max is a first round tender.

  1. First-round tender: Free agent can negotiate with other teams, but original team has option to match any deal and will receive a first-round selection if it opts not to match the deal.
  2. Second-round tender: Free agent can negotiate with other teams, but original team has option to match any deal and will receive a second-round selection if it opts not to match the deal.
  3. Original-round tender: Free agent can negotiate with other teams, but original team has option to match any deal and will receive a selection equal to the round the player was originally selected in if it opts not to match the deal.
  4. Right of first refusal: Free agent can negotiate with other teams, but original team has option to match any deal. The team will not receive any compensation if it opts not to match another deal.
Not my list

I follow our drafts closely as most fanatic Cowboys fans. I don’t remember Deion Jones ever being mentioned as a draft possibly for the Cowboys. Jones is having a great career for the Falcons, but shouldn’t be included in your argument.

On the other hand, Myles Jack was highly regarded at the time and actually had injury concerns himself. Think the fact that our team doctor performed the surgery was the deciding factor bc the FO had ‘insider’ information. Both have recovered nicely with their respected teams.. but Statically, I don’t think we missed out on much by picking Jaylon.

2016
Jaylon- missed the season while recovering
Jack- 24 tckles- .5 sacks

So let’s not act like Dallas totally fubarred this.. Elliott is arguably the Most Valuable Player on the team and Jaylon has progressed beyond most imaginations.

Using revisionist history to be upset is kinda lame.

Oh damn. Wasn’t there a 1st and 3rd tender? Was that eliminated with the last CBA?

Thanks, we had this talk a few weeks ago and I have been waiting 3 years for verification

Either way we have to extend him IMO....... if we 1st Round tender him for 4.5m someone may match with a crazy deal

Best to offer him a 2-3 year extension right now.... he gets the big signing bonus and still gets FA in a couple years in his mid 20s

Offer 2/20m extension to 2019 and add 5m in incentives.... keeps him thru 2021....with 15m SB

2019.............1m base...........5m sb............6m cap hit
2020.............4m base...........5m sb............9m cap hit
2021............1m+5m RB........5m sb...........11m cap hit
2021

You've got a point there. I think Zeke was a win now, Romo window pick. Jaylon was not a Romo window pick. They pursued contradictory strategies.

Zeke may still turn out to be worth it if he can deliver his production for 6 or 7 years. But that wasn't the way to bet at the time. May not be the way to bet now.
There was a chance JSmith played in 2016 but we were covered with SLee, Hitch and DWilson

A dream deferred in this case turned into a fine wine
