Mock

A pre-Draft guess as to what I would do and not an attempt to predict what the Cowboys will do. Of course once the Cowboys are actually on the clock with these picks and you see what is there that you didn't expect to be there that's when you do your real mock.

The rule is if I don't see the player projected elsewhere in the general area of the pick, I can't select him. He's off the board.

2(58) Dre'Mont Jones DT Ohio St.
I've seen enough of Maliek Collins. Nice player but has no anchor, struggles to stay on his feet and can't stay on the field. Jones is kind of getting lost in the shuffle of this deep DL class. He is an ascending talent who will be a better pro. Has War Daddy-ish potential. Or at least War Father figure-ish.

3(90) Amani Hooker S Iowa
The Cowboys can worry about interchangeable safeties, I just want to upgrade talent. Would walk in the best safety on the team. Can actually make a play on the ball. I love his instincts.

4(128) Bobby Evans T Oklahoma
Either a RT or a move inside to G at the pro level. Plays with power and a meanstreak. Would give the Cowboys options should Collins depart and/or Williams not develop. You must keep the OL fortified if you have any hope with this QB.

4(136) Isaac Nauta TE Georgia
He won't stretch the field but he will be that reliable QB friendly safety valve this team is familiar with. He's a starter in 2020.

5(165) Rodney Anderson RB Oklahoma
The big issue here is durability but that's not a problem in Dallas with the role he would fill. In the event of a Ezekiel Elliott injury break glass and you still have a physical run game to lean on until the all timer gets back.

7(241) Jazz Ferguson WR Northwestern St.
You have to take a flyer on this kind of size/speed prospect.

I'd be stunned if that isn't one of the greatest draft classes of all time. And speaking of that....

Review

What I've done in previous additions of my draft thoughts. The good and the bad. (Mostly good. Barely any bad. More bad luck.)

2018

https://cowboyszone.com/threads/draft-thoughts.401200/

1(19) Calvin Ridley WR Alabama - A plug and play starter and the best rookie WR of the class. 10 TDs on the year.
2(50) Ian Thomas TE Indiana - Caught over 30 balls for over 300 yards with 6 starts in relief of the injured Greg Olsen. Their future starter.
3(81) Darius Leonard OLB South Carolina St. - Defensive rookie of the year. Made Vander Sloot look like he has some kind of palsy.
4(116) Kyzir White S West Virginia - Was transitioned to LB and starred in camp for the Chargers. A week 1 starter but only made 3 before going on IR with a knee injury.
4(137) Kendrick Norton DT Miami - Spent the season on the Panthers practice squad before signing with the Dolphins late in the year.
5(171) Tegray Scales ILB Indiana - Colts practice squad. Just signed a futures deal with the Steelers.
6(192) Tony Adams G North Carolina St. - Spent time on Jaguars and then Patriots practice squad.
6(193) Marcell Frazier DE Missouri - Went to camp with the Browns. Currently unsigned.
6(208) Jordan Chunn RB Troy - Cowboys UDFA still with the team.
7(236) D'Montre Wade CB Murray St. - Stuck with the Chiefs as an UDFA.

2017

https://cowboyszone.com/threads/draft-thoughts.376639/

1(28) Reuben Foster ILB Alabama - Tremendous player and head case. The grade on this pick is still very much in question.
2(60) Taylor Moton T Western Michigan - Emerged as a quality starting RT for the Panthers in year 2. Now being moved to his natural LT spot this year.
3(92) Jourdan Lewis CB Michigan - A legitimate talent wasted by an overrated coach in Dallas.
4(133) Shelton Gibson WR West Virginia - Still on the bottom of the Eagles depth chart. Often injured. Will need a big summer to keep his spot.
6(211) Ifeadi Odenigbo DE Northwestern - Has bounced around the league doing little. Now back with the Vikings on a futures contract.
7(228) DeAngelo Brown DT Louisville - Out of the league.
7(246) David Jones S Richmond - Stuck on the Patriots' roster as an UDFA, now with the Lions on a futures deal.

2016

https://cowboyszone.com/threads/my-draft-thoughts.347445/

1(4) Ezekiel Elliott RB Ohio St. - Best back on planet Earth.
2(34) Kevin Dodd DE Clemson - Currently out of the league. Busto.
3(67) Nick Vannett TE Ohio St. - Sharing time with the oft injured Jimmy Graham. Good looking player.
4(101) Javon Hargrave DT South Carolina St. - Been starting since day 1 for the Steelers. Beast.
4(135) Blake Martinez ILB Stanford - Won a starting job his rookie year. Co-led the league in tackles in 2017. Finished 2nd in the league this year to Darius Leonard. Will McClay this.
6(189) Ryan Smith CB North Carolina Central - Has started 16 games for the Bucs the last two years but probably more of a quality backup.
6(212) Duke WIlliams WR Auburn - Back in the NFL with the Bills after a year in the CFL. Tough break for him.
6(216) Tyrone Holmes DE Montana - After several short stints in the league went to the AAF. Now back with the Dolphins as an OLB.
6(217) Stephane Nembot T Colorado - Spent a couple of years on IR with the Ravens. Now in the CFL.

-

2015

https://cowboyszone.com/threads/my-draft-rumblings.320406/

1(27) Eli Harold OLB Virginia - Now on his 3rd team. A decent backup at best. Bust.
2(60) Grady Jarrett DT Clemson - Impact starter. One of the more disruptive DTs in the league.
3(91) Duke Johnson RB Miami - Nice 3rd down back.
4(127) Jaquiski Tartt S Samford - Very good starter for the 49ers but has missed a significant portion of the last two seasons.
5(163) JaCorey Shepherd CB Kansas - Tore his ACL at the start of his first pro camp and ended up in the AAF. A complete loser at life.
7(236) DeAndre Smelter WR Georgia Tech - Out of the league. He who smelter dealter. It was me.
7(243) Sean Donnelly T Tulane - Never stuck. I don't know what he's doing now. I mind my own business.

-

2014

https://cowboyszone.com/threads/my-draft-ramblings.288837/

1(30) DeMarcus Lawrence DE Boise St. - Bust.
2(47) Dominique Easley DT Florida - Currently a free agent. Has been a disappointment in two stops in the league.
3(77) Ego Ferguson DT LSU - Out of the league. I bet he's not so arrogant now.
3(78) Donte Moncrief WR Mississippi - A good 3rd WR who can stretch the field.
4(119) Jerick McKinnon RB Georgia Southern - Missed the entire season last year and his chance to be the featured back in San Francisco. Was solid with the Vikings. A good backup at the minimum.
5(158) Zach Moore DE Concordia-St. Paul - Made several stops around the league including with the Cowboys. Had 3.5 sacks for the Cardinals last year. Currently a free agent.
7(229) Khyri Thornton DT Mississippi - Ended up being taken in the 3rd round by Green Bay. They regret the pick more than I do. Out of the league.
7(231) Zach Fulton G Tennessee - Emerged as a starter for the Texans at C and G. Gem.
7(238) Boseko Lokombo OLB Oregon - In the CFL.
7(248) Marquis Spruill OLB Syracuse - Out of the league.
7(251) Jemea Thomas DB Georgia Tech - 6th round pick for the Patriots. Made a few stops including the Cowboys. Out of the league.
7(254) Terrence Fede DE Marist - Spent 4 seasons in the NFL. Currently a free agent.

I believe Will McClay controls this draft. (Cowboys!)

I also believe that while they have made strides in sticking to their board over the years they will be very DT and S minded in this draft. They'd like to add a TE and RB too.

Oh, this is going to be painful waiting until the 58th pick. Especially watching the Eagles pick 3 times in front of the Cowboys.

I'm not a fan of D.K. Metcalf. He gives me the David Boston vibe bulking up to the point you can't play anymore. Let someone else take him. I'm not using a pick in the first two rounds on him. We shall see if that's smart or foolish.

I'm all for BPA but if the Cowboys use a day 2 pick on a RB they are complete idiots. You made the commitment to Zeke when you took him top 5 overall. He's done nothing but prove he's an elite, workhorse RB since then. You're going to re-sign him because you made that commitment to him. It makes no sense to take a back 4th overall, watch him win rushing titles and then pass on giving him a 2nd contract. So knowing that, what the bleep does this new RB do exactly? Sit on the bench? Take our best player off the field on 3rd downs, the most important downs in football? Why? Because you're scared? How does this improve the team? That would be about the worst use of a 2nd or 3rd round pick I could possibly think of.

This RB class is weak anyway. Wait until day 3.

I believe after this draft the NFC East starting QBs could very well look like this....

Eagles - He who was foretold to us
Cowboys - What's his face
Giants - Daniel Jones
Commanders - Josh Rosen

I'm not a big believer in Jones or Rosen but I'd put the Cowboys 4th in terms of QB talent if this ends up being the case. Right in time to hand over 30 million per to that stiff.

I hate Prescott but you know who I really hate right now? That damn Armani Copper. Screw that guy.

Do not disturb.....until Sunday.

Enjoy the draft.

Totally agree on the TB position. It would be the height of silliness using your second round pick on a TB. That’s a horrendous waste of value.

Your first two picks are excellent.

I sometimes wonder if you are Will McClay.

Or Judd Garrett.

I like Hooker and Jones they would both upgrade the defense. You're right about Hooker, he's got great instincts and that's something you can't teach.

Hearing/reading Commanders want Haskin bad.......could trade up if he gets past the Giants. He and Sydner son attended the same high school in Maryland. Just me but I'd trade for Rosen and not look back........especially with a 2nd or 3rd pick.

Hooker is my pet cat. Really like those Iowa players. Disappointed the Cowboys have shown no interest.

You're not alone, they were doing a mini review of Anthony Nelson on On The Clock and said that Iowa players usually exceed their scouting reports. It is too bad they haven't show any interest in him, who knows what kind of requirements Richard has for the DBs. Hooker will probably go to someone like the Patriots and have a storied career.

Jones and Hooker would be a great start to the draft IMO. Better than Rapp and whatever DL is left there at 90.

Jones has his warts but his athleticism and skill set is top notch.

I wouldn't mind that all but would be extremely surprised if it actually happened. Jones wouldn't have to slide far, right now he's ranked 53 overall. Hooker is ranked 68 overall but he could be there.

Like everything but another TE.
We already are stocked there.

Wait till next year.

Hooker may not be there at the slot we pick in the 3rd round.
Maybe package the second 4th round pick to move up a little.

You seem to think a lot of these players will drop to the slot for us.
I'm thinking they get picked up a bit earlier.

Nelson is the kind of guy a team like the Ravens takes and gets a good player.

On the simulator I've taken him several times over Hill at 90. He was highly productive and most of his weaknesses are correctable including a year in the off season program. Zach Allen is ranked 71 and Nelson is ranked 80.

It bothers me that you throw such shade and disrespect at Blake Jarwin.
Sorry, it will take more than one breakout game against a bad secondary versus a team that quit in a meaningless game to convince me he is a real talent.

If the idea is to get a Tyrone Crawford kind of guy who is not exactly a prototypical edge rusher, it is between him and Allen.
