Any interest in Karl Joseph?

This year is only 2 million, the 5th year option that hasn't been picked up would be pretty high though. But you could probably get him to sign a new contract before the trade goes through.

Fair. 2 mil is not bad at all, for a try and buy. Worth a mid rd pick.

Joseph would cost less than $7MM next year, hardly "big" money. The 5th year option for safeties in 2018 was only $6.3MM.
What kind of money do you call it?
When the upper tier safeties like Amos, Joyner, etc only get $2-3M more

Above average doesn't necessarily mean 1st round talent, plus he's only been an every game starter one season out of his career. Part of why he was drated so high was he had 5 INTs his senior year, and he only has 3 in 3 years in the NFL.

Let's make this simpler then.

He's better than any SS we have on the roster.

Players seem happy to get out of the dysfunction that is the raiders organization. Mack and Cooper were thrilled and obviously flourished once they were traded. I’d imagine Joseph could use a change of scenery as well.
I’d like to hear Amari’s thoughts on him being a teammate and lining up against him in practice.

$2-3MM more is a pretty big difference.

I suspect some people assumed the 5th year option number for Joseph would be over $10MM because that's the average of salary for the Top 5 of the position. But that's not how the option works for where Joseph was drafted.

I'd rather trade him for a guy like Joseph that has first round talent for Richard to work with than wait for a 3rd (more likely 4th or 5th round) comp pick in 2021.

The issue is having to pay him after you get him vs getting a guy on a cheap rookie contract.

I didn't say he wasn't, but that's not what I asked about. If we are going to trade away our starting RT we should get more than someone who has had a spotty 3 year career.

Were you bothered when we traded a #1 pick for Cooper and had to "pay him" as opposed to getting a player on a cheap rookie contract for 4-5 years?

Collins likely isn't resigning here after this season. He's also not going to be paid enough to warrant a 3rd round comp pick.

So would you rather have Joseph for this year and then 2020 at less than $7MM or would you rather have a 4th or 5th round comp pick that you won't see until 2021?

Our starting RT is a spotty player himself.

He has started every game the last 2 years, and while not a great player, is better than Cowboy fans give him credit for because he has the unfortunate situation of always being compared to 3 All-Pro O-Linemen on the same unit.

The Raiders, on the other hand, have signed 2 starting safeties from other teams, and used a 1st round draft pick on a safety. What does this say about Joseph?

Yeah.............. I don't think the problem here is that he's being compared to Martin or Frederick or Smith.

The problem is he's likely just an average RT. Better at run blocking than pass blocking.

I also suspect that the Cowboys know this as well and know he's not going to be worth the money in a year so they are already preparing for the future and why you saw stories after McGovern was drafted that the Cowboys have talked about Williams moving out to OT.

Hard to believe he’d slide into a better situation than playing beside Zack.

I'm a big La'el Collins fan and will admit that he's not worth the money he's being paid now, much less "in a year." He's making top money for a right tackle this year and isn't close to the performance level of the others. That's not bashing the player, it's admitting the obvious. Jerry Jones is making good for a player that got screwed in the draft process and missed out on millions on the front end of his career.

We should not trade Collins this year. He is our starting RT and we will get up to a 3rd comp if he signs a big FA contract next year.
I doubt Collins signs for enough for a 3rd comp. That also assumes we don't sign anyone to offset. That 3rd also would come in 2021.

These coaches would rather have a 6th rounder.

While some "Cowboys fans" give him far too much credit.

To me, it says "Gruden" and "Raiders". And I stop trying to make sense of things that make no sense.

It could say that the new coaching staff wants to go in another direction?

The Raiders are also in a different situation that we are. They are in a total rebuild so a guy facing a 5th year option might not be the direction they want to go in, and rather, get younger and cheaper.

We are in a win now situation and the safety position is one of our perceived weaknesses.

I never said that.

But you brought up the notion of trading a pick for a veteran that you have to pay big money to compared to a rookie.
