Awesome news, like it when the front office actually does something I agree with.

I don't think so. He is more built to be tackle size wise as well as his college skill set. Guards need to be bigger while tackle needs to be little more mobile on their feet .
I would expect Collins to be moved to tackle.

No, no he is not - he is built to play guard, the only problem was he needed another offseason to get to the needed weight. Stop with these experiments. He played a good portion of his career in college as a tackle, why do you think most scouts projected him as best suited as a guard? You think they haven't seen their fair share of players who fit the mold of guard and tackle?

He's a guard and should stay at guard. Again, if we want a tackle we need to do better at drafting tackles and we won't have to try these experiments. We're taking players from what should be their natural position the NFL and plugging them elsewhere in hopes we hit on something. It's dumb, it wastes seasons/careers of players - it already happened to Collins. A guy who could have been a great guard is now just an average to good tackle on his best days - and this place thought they were onto something when they cried for Collins to switch.

Do you know why he was projected as a guard?

My thing is why didn't they do that with him last year. Knowing dang well his body wasn't built for guard

Maybe because he wasn't ready for OT in the NFL either, or so thy thought. And they thought he would be better at OG, kind of like Martin thinking they could be smart and move him inside. You never know what this staff is thinking sometimes.

They got Martin right, doesn't mean they was going to be right on Williams. I think, as we seen, Su'a-filo was much better. But was it him or when they fired Alexander and promoted Colombo or some of both.

They are following the Patriot way, they'll let him & Byron walk next season and recoup 2 3rd round comp picks.

it does seem to me that the FO is starting to think more that way in recent years; you draft guys that can play semi-immediately, making the guys that are going to be expensive more expendable; let them walk, recoup a comp pick; rinse and repeat....the secondary is young even with Jones, so letting him walk for a cop pick frees up cap space for the future and potentially nets you a comp pick, s long as you aren't players in free agency

They should have had him as swing tackle last year if the move they had planned was him moving to RT

Could have been a plan. Not sure if they really had a plan after Frederick went down. As I believe they thought a rookie LG between Frederick and Smith would help him and hide some rookie deficiencies. But once he went down, it was line up the best 5 as Looney had to then start.
They really didn't have any one else on the OL to step in.

They signed Fleming but he was to be the swing OT, and Marcus Martin could have played, but he was on IR. They signed Ehringer, but he went on IR also. Then they were down to Redmond, until they signed Su'a-flio a few games into the season.

So I can see how it all played out. The OL was in flux all TC and into the season.
So now they have a much deeper OL, lie 9 deep. And 10 as Redmond filled in ok when he played last year as well. Now some are touting Hyatt.

So they have a lot of options right now to experiement with in OTA's, then at the start of TC.

I think the jury is hung on whether he is NFL starting lineman material. Outside of mental make up and character (good kid by all reports) there is real concerns on physical ability and how it translates to the positions.

He's got weight room and technique issues to work on to beat NFL calibre d-linemen.

yes because jerry made a deal with him so he would sign with us as an UDFA. Doug Free was also at RT. I think Collins was built for guard. He had the size, body, and attitude for guard.
IIRC, he was successful in college at guard.
