That is a good write up and it is dead on; Dallas has been knocking it out of the park for about a decade now. However, that story is from April 2018. Dallas would have looked even better taking Leighton Vander Esch, Connor Williams, and Michael Gallup into consideration... though Travis Frederick would have fallen out of their arbitrary 5 year window.
I’m a big draft guy and since Jimmy Johnson left, I had been sorely disappointed in the Cowboys drafting. However, since about 2010 it has been homerun after homerun and I couldn’t be happier. Draft well and good things happen to your franchise. I love how the Cowboys pick their guys now and it is really nice to trust the Dallas evaluations... something I used to never do.
I'll go a little further. Since after the 2001 draft, the horrible draft where Dallas took Quincy Carter, there have only been 4 disappointing drafts for the Cowboys. The 2009 draft was a disaster. At least the drafts in 2004, 2006 and 2012 produced a player or two.
I may get shredded for this, but I believe much of the credit for the improved drafts should go to Bill Parcells. Not counting the 2002 draft (that gave Dallas Roy Williams and Andre Gurode 5 Pro Bowls each), Parcells worked on the Scouting Department and taught them what to look for in players. Even in the Landry and Jimmy Johnson years, there are hits and misses.
What I like is that since 2010, Dallas' hits have been more common with better impact and production (or so it seems). This decade, 11 different players drafted by Dallas have participated in 25 Pro Bowls so far. One would think these numbers will increase because Jaylon Smith is not on this list - and LVE does not appear to be a one shot wonder. The 2019 draftees have a chance to improve these stats.
I believe the root of this draft success goes back to Parcells.
