My problem with this is not the money. Of course i have a problem with the outrages amount of money these players get.

But in Daks case its not about how much he will earn. I really dont care if he gets 25 or 30 mils per year. The problem i have is with the decission to bind the franchise to him longterm. Right now he is not even a medicore NFL QB. And in the last 3 years he essentially hasnt shown ability to improve on his weaknesess.

To imagine we will be bound to him for the next 4 to 5 years gives me shivers. Of course he may pan out, maybe even this season. But to give him a longterm contract you cant get out of if he doesnt ? That is a big big risk.

When you pay a QB 30 million a year, you shouldn't have to also pay a WR 16 million and a RB another 16. That QB shouldn't need it. He should simply make stars of the next batch of skill players because he should be great. He's getting paid like it.

Prescott needs it and more.

As usual you are dead wrong. The CONTRACT will be a disgrace? Not really...but the Billionaire Bumpkins who sign him to it and pay all that money are certainly slow learners if not a disgrace. Jay Ratliff, Marion Barber and about a dozen other bad mega deals come to mind.

I have no doubt we already have found out. If Dak would accept $20 MM/year the Cowboys would have been stumbling over themselves to get the contract prepared and executed before he changed his mind.

I don’t think that’s at all a given. Dak likely will have a shiner new contract that will tie him to the team, and a new coach won’t want to come into a situation without an established QB.

I disagree on new coach issue. Not always possible, but most will want their own choice of QB. We saw a good example in Arizona recently where the incoming HC wasnt even willing to let a first rounder compete in camp. I just dont see any incoming HC wanting to be tied to using Dak.

Regardless of peoples views of Dak, JG being in the final year of his contract is reason enough to not extend Dak. Who knows what system and players a new coaching squad will want.

The reality is even if Dak isn't the ideal guy, a new coach can't just waltz in and find someone better. It's not as easy as some fans want to imagine. Even if the team were to have a top 5 draft pick to use on a QB (which they won't), that still is far from a certainty. Somebody started a thread a few days ago that showed all the first round picks that have been used on QBs the last 10 years or so, and far and away most never reached Dak's level.

The bottom line is the future of a coach depends on how successful he is, and a coach isn't going to want to risk floundering around a few years looking for a QB. His job may not survive it.

There aren't even enough quality starting QB's to fill the 32 teams, much less enough to feel you can just throw out one that wins games and gets to the playoffs and replace him with someone better. Teams are struggling every year with guys like Tyrod Taylor and Ryan Tennehil and Marcus Mariota and Brock Osweiler and on and on.

And, again, history shows that even 1st round draft picks are unlikely to play as well or better than Dak, and history also shows that new head coaches don't automatically want to run off QBs that have had at least some measure of success.

I'm talking about facts, not personal feelings. I'm frankly not convinced Dak is the best answer myself. I'm just realistic enough to know that QBs don't grow on trees, and a new head coach is going to want to keep someone that has demonstrated he can win games with the team.

I think we're coming at this from different perspectives. Id be in the "always seeking to improve the roster" camp. I would prepare to try rather than settle for second best.

While history shows a high % of 1st round picks will be busts, it also shows that most elite QBs are 1st rounders. One thing good about 1st round picks is that you get one every year. There is never only a single chance - if you draft and it doesnt work out, you go again.

There are people advocating a 5 or 6 year extension for Dak. My sense is that the odds of winning a SB would be a lot higher if we decided to draft a 1st round QB, and if he didnt work out, draft another, within the 6 year period.

Just think how foolish that will look when the Cowboys extend Prescott before this season starts. And then you think they're going to release him less than a year latter? Lastly since both Jerry and Stephen have said Prescott is their QB for the future I seriously doubt Prescott is tied to Garrett in any way.

Here's the huge flaw in that idea. You're trying to compare a QB on the 2nd year of a ROOKIE contract to Prescott who will have just signed a big contract. There aren't going to be a lot of teams willing to trade for a QB with that kind of cap hit and the Cowboys (Jerry) isn't going to lower his asking price making it that much harder to trade him. Next, Jerry won't trade Prescott. If Garrett doersn't get a new contract I'll bet that whoever the new coach is Jerry will say as part of accepting this job also includes Prescott just like he did when he hired Phillips and was told Garrett will be the OC. Lastly even though Jerry hasn't given Garrett an extension does not mean that Garrett is automatically gone. There have been other years where there was speculation by fans and the talking heads that Garrett was going to be fired and he wasn't. Jones knows that the players like and respect him and he likes the culture that Garrett has in the locker room.
