I remember he was a 57% passer at MSU and not beloved by team mates. I remember I was glad he didnt land here, and no I wouldnt kick the tires.

No way Dak would have been on PS. 3rd QB at minimum.

I get that but what are odds we would have had three QBs on the active roster. Again, remember Romo was the starter and they'd already named Moore as his back-up. Hell, at that time Dak was just a 4th round pick trying to make the team.

We kept 3 QBs for a few years now. Look at where Rush and White were drafted........ Rush wasn't drafted and White was a late 5th. Dak was a 4th round pick, no way he goes to the practice squad and if he did another team would have signed him.

With a rookie? Good. They kept Mike White on active roster all year for example and he was a 6th.

see this is one reason i favor paying Dak now,our inability to scout QBs,even Dak was drafted as a backup. We have a long history of drafting duds and being associated with failed QBs for a long time since Romo emerged.
exactly , and it wasnt just connor, there was another guy they wanted, went to denver i think and he was a bust too.
and then there was jerry and manziel lol.
They have Dak, so 1 bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush!

I think he meant having interest after QBs in the draft that flamed out quickly with their 1st team.
Manziel, Lynch, Cook are some recent names.

But, jmo
yes lynch and cook were way above dak on the draft board, and had they fell enough for dallas to get one of them , I dont think they draft Dak.
That is why most of us know it was just luck we wound up with Dak.
Add to that kellen breaking his ankle and romo getting hurt all allowed Dak to step in fresh out of college.
Had Dak sat on the bench 2-3 years, he might never had become a starter in NFL.
He could have wound up on another team too.
So Dak was lucky too, and now here he is looking at a 100 mil contract! so he is real lucky, but he made the most out of the luck he had.

The alternatives - as Paxton Lynch and Connor Cook were - were horrifying. We can be thankful that other teams saved Dallas from themselves. And then think about the idea of watching this quarterback walk and trusting these folks to identify, acquire, and coach up another one.

Yeah, I'm not trusting that for a second.

Exactly, give Dak the tools and knowledge to grow. I was a fan of Cook but was on the fence about Lynch. Dak is gamer in the playoffs and has nearly eclipse Romo in the number of come backs. Some Cowboys fans don't see a good thing staring them in the face.

Truly. And we've had him on the cheap to this point while the Rams and Eagles have paid millions as well. But that's not appreciated either.

4th round picks are *nothing* to be spending on QBs. We should have been spending a pick every year since Dak became QB to see if we could hit on another running QB.

Belichick has spent 10 picks on QBs since Brady was SB MVP in 2001.

We've spent 5, and that's counting Stanback.

Since 2000 (Aikman's last season), the Cowboys have drafted 4 QBs (plus Isaiah Stanback, but I don't count him), tied for fewest in the NFL (the average team drafted nearly 8 QBs over that time and 6 teams including the Patriots drafted 11 or 12). Carter, McGee, Dak and White. The team they're tied with is the Colts, who of course had Manning through most of this period and then after a one-year lull got to pick Luck.

It's not that the Cowboys draft duds, it's that they simply don't draft QBs at all. Not a great strategy to my mind, but it's what they do.

And I think it's unfair to talk about "our inability to scout QBs" when the entire NFL evaluated these guys pretty much the same way--that's why Dak was there for us at the end of the 4th and we missed out on the other guys. Drafting is hard and unpredictable. I don't see any reason to think the Cowboys are worse at evaluating QB prospects than anyone else.

We've actually done *better* than most teams on scouting QBs.

Romo, Matt Moore, and Dak while spending only two 4ths and a 5th. And the jury is still out on Mike White.

QBs are a crapshoot. We should be throwing the dice much more often.

My belief is that teams *think* they have to spend big on a QB, then management careers get tied into those QBs because they've spent big on them, and they don't give guys who might have been decent QBs a chance.

The *data* shows that you have to spend big on QBs because teams only give the guys they spend big on the chance.

Romo could have easily never happened. Dak could still be riding the bench somewhere.

Romo and Dak both walked into powerhouse offenses, but for the QB. Maybe if you build the offense, the QB will come.

Yeah, 4th round picks aren't guys you cut. Some other team will take them.

It's funny. Some people worry about us cutting 7th round JAGs, and others think we could have snuck Dak onto the PS.

When there is a lot of luck involved, roll the dice more often.

Can anyone think of a team or teams that consistently drafts good QBs?

Is Cook better than DAL current backup QBs?

DAL probably have enough Connors' on the roster.
INDY. Because they got lucky twice.

PITT isn't too bad. Though they did go through Maddux and I think another or three before Rothy.

Also the first preseason game Dak played in against the Rams was a complete revelation, the story afterward was already that Dak was a steal in the 4th and that he was a starting caliber QB. And that was after only one preseason game.
