Why does an athlete need $30m instead of $20m?

Because, again, the owner isn't confined by a salary cap. His income doesn't affect the team's chances of winning a Super Bowl.

Whereas an NFL player's income is confined by a salary cap. If he gets paid an extra $10 million/year, then there is less money for the other 52 players on the roster. And the team may therefore be less able to sign free-agent talent.

And the owners *could* get rid of the salary cap. They don't because they want to make $250 million (this is just the revenue sharing portion, there are likely more in profits) and still have a shot at winning. Why should player "X" sacrifice money in order to win, when the owners aren't willing to?

I agree with this, and this is pretty much how it works in the private sector as well. If a team is willing to pay the price for a given player, then it stands to reason that this is what the market is for said player. That is why I've been asking the question, "which team might give Dak 30 plus mil per season over 5 to 6 seasons? I honestly don't think there is one out there but I could absolutely be wrong there. I just don't see it.

There is one sure fire way to find out what Dak is worth on the open market. If Dallas think he's asking for too much, don't give in. It's really that simple.

That’s the armchair fans take. In reality, NFL organizations know there’s a lot more to it than that.

Nothing is simple in the NFL.
The business side is multi-layered and complicated with multiple parties involved when you include agents and reps.

It’s a team sport. It takes more than top tier talent to win a championship. Team chemistry is right up there with talent along with a little luck “the catch”. It’s one thing if Dak hasn’t proved himself but he has over and over again. The players love and respect him and voted him team captain. The coaches love him because he continues to work at his craft. You diss him and make him play another year without a contract like @Manwiththeplan suggests sends a message to the rest of the team. “This guy has proved himself over and over again and you’re doing this to him? Pfffffbt.”

I have never dissed him. I have never suggested to make him play another year without an extension.

I said nothing is simple in the NFL.

I know you haven’t. Didn’t mean to imply you did. Sorry if it came off that way.

Why does Jerry need a helicopter.
have you ever traveled from highland park to frisco via the tollway? between the time spent on the road and the tolls, should pay for itself in a few years.

That's basically what Washington did with Cousins. Cousins left and still got paid, more than likely someone would be willing to pay Dak even if we didn't too. Is Washington in a better position than they would have been? Short term, no they still had to find a QB and pay that QB and the team didn't do any better. Long Term, who knows what Haskins will or won't be, but it did cost them a high draft pick that could have been used elsewhere if Cousins were still there. What it did cost them was time, 3 years minimum to see if it was a better or worse move while the new guy develops, 3 years older for some of their key vets.

If you let a guy walk, you better have a plan how to replace him with a team ready to win now.

You don't think as big and physical as they are they aren't risking their lives? I mean you have to at least admit they are doing far more than sitting in a office signing checks though right?
Yes they are taking big time risks, but they are not exactly making $45k per year signing checks in an office. The smart ones can hopefully make it work for them and get out by the time they are 32. For the most part it is a terrific start to building financial freedom for a lot of these guys, but u gotta be smart or at least have some good common sense.

I think that if they are risking life in the process, it's through the use of substances that they really shouldn't be using, more then anything. No, I think the game has evolved to the point that there is little risk of death in the actual game itself. I think that there was a time but I think most of that has been legislated out of the Modern NFL.

We never find out until guys are retired or dead.

I assume you're being facetious, I can find examples if you aren't....
I’m being dead serious. I’d appreciate the examples.
