I've been one of Garrett's critics over the years. I liked the idea of him, especially at first, but I think he's made some clear game-day management errors that are inexcusable at the elite level.

However, he has a lot of qualities you want in a head coach. He's consistent, he's extremely positive, and he knows how to communicate with players. I like the idea of him being the "walk around" coach if you surround him with premiere coordinators. The team has a lot of faith in the unproven Kellen Moore, and he's either going to work or he isn't, but Garrett's biggest weakness IMO is game-day decisions, so the idea of removing from him that, allows you to keep him in a capacity that promotes his strengths.

With all of that being said, this very much feels like a make-it-or-break-it year for Garrett. The Jones very much want to be right about him, but not extending him after last year's success was one of the smartest moves made by ownership in years. Garrett is either going to repeat or surpass last year's success or the team is going to move on. I think both sides of this fan base (fan boys and haters) can be satisfied with that. Win or go home. That's all any (realistic) sports fan can ask for.

My college team (USC) in the exact same position, so as a die hard fan, I'm either going to see my teams win next year or will see them move on to new coach who (hopefully) improves our chances of winning.
That’s a really solid, logical post. It’s pretty much the way I view it as well.

A lot of his game day mistakes are lessons learned and aren’t repeated, although he still can mess up here or there. He’s a much better game day coach than he was in, say, 2013.

I do think he has a lot of good things as a coach and as one of the leaders of your franchise. Some don’t like it but he’s a part of the great talent acquisition that Dallas has had since he became the head coach. He helps build the rosters that have been among the most talented in the league for the last half decade or so.

His vision for the kind of physical, smart team he wants to assemble has influenced Jerry/Stephen/McClay a lot and has helped build a team that’s won the division 3 of the last 5 years and has won the second most games in the NFL over the past 3.

I don’t want to lose that from the franchise.

His actual game day coaching I don’t mind losing so much.

Ultimately, I agree that it was smart to let Jason coach out the final year of his contract.

It’ll all come out in the wash this season. If Garrett has finally learned enough to get the team over the hump, then he’ll get a new contract which, IMO, would be best for the franchise.

If he can’t help the team get where they want to go, then the team will move on and start a new chapter.

I hope he wins and gets his new contract because I think that’s what’s best for the franchise. If not, I just hope the talent acquisition stays the same.

Garret is so "well -respected" that the cowboys are perfectly comfortable having him as a lame duck head coach for the 2019 season. Even Jerry has finally figured out that this guy just hasn't won in spite of ample opportunity, and he won't be bidding against anyone for his services at the end of the season.

Now, if you want to argue that he's had 2 great regular seasons even though they amounted to nothing but meaningless regular season awards, fine.

Lots of coaches and lots of players get to contract years. That’s not an indication of anything. Last contract year people were saying the same thing...right before the 5 year, $30MM extension people immediately started complaining about even though they thought it wouldn’t really happen.

IMO, the contract wasn’t renewed because:

1. Jerry likes incentives and views Jason coaching in his last contract year as motivation to succeed more than a threat in failure.

And

2. Jerry knows that if Jason was offered another HC job, he would still want to be in Dallas as long as the money was similar... so there really isn’t risk on Jerry’s part.

I didn't say I know either, but Jerry for sure went out of his way to make sure the world know he lost no faith and that Garrett in his words "Garrett isn't on any shaky ground ". Could Jerry be schmoozing the crazed fans? When did Jerry lay out some kind of milestone for Garrett to reach in order to come back. We've heard nothing resembling anything close to it.

The Cowboys roster is a lot better than most Cowboys fans think. Every NFL team has weaknesses - it is up to the coaching staff to hide/minimize those weaknesses.

Cowboys roster itself is almost elite level

The problem and I hate to sound like a broken clock is coaching the coaching is borderline middle school level

I think they may have finally got the right offensive coaches...I still question the D. Last years playoff loss was troubling. The lack of adjustments...just stinks of a staff not knowing what to do in crisis.

The defense let this team down big time. We could've beat those Rams.

I think your certainty of Garrett having to achieve some kind of threshold or being fired is hilarious.

I think your "coach wannabe" act is even more hilarious.

I didn't expect a straight answer when you clearly haven't got one. Just those coach defense mechanisms kicking in before you thought things through.

There is absolutely no evidence that Garret is capable of winning a "championship". He's been at this for quite awhile now and is able to survive his lack of success only b/c he's so good at managing his relationship with Jerry. Backslapping and kissing tail is his primary skill set.
what about bill cowher? it took him a while to find success....

You don't know what a straight answer is ...lol I told you I didn't know either. I don't known what you were looking for, but your bit is quite old. Actually you look kinda foolish for putting out ultimatum for Jason when his bosses gave none...lol how many years you've been proclaiming, this is the year?. ...lol

You don't know why it hasn't been renewed.
By all means, enlighten everybody.

This should be good...

The FACT is, nobody outside the Cowboys’ FO knows why Garrett’s contract hasn’t been renewed.

Is that enlightening enough for ya?
