I was always hoping for a continuation, am I wrong by assuming this seems like a partial "do over?"

After talking to a retired Colonel, I'm convinced that if Maverick did something that kept him at the rank of Captain that long, they'd have drummed him out of the Navy long before now.

Some guys loved the first one because of all the jets and stuff. I actually liked it because it was a great story (minus the Kelly McGillis parts) and it was a role perfectly suited for someone with a cocky attitude like Tom Cruise.

I always thought the original was overrated. Pretty corny, and more about a cute young Tom Cruise and silly catch phrases than content. And I agree - they could have done better than Kelly McGillis.

The trailer to this one makes me think it could be better than the original.

I hate most remakes or waaay overdue sequels.

You’ve got Maverick still racing bikes down the runway after planes, the beach volleyball scene, et cetera, which are all just lame fan service.

The original Top Gun was one of the few movies I actually went back to see twice in the theater. The trailer for this new one doesn’t do it for me.

Right, it's about him. It would have been better if he was an instructor to some young pilots - IMO
