PFT - Cowboys aren’t going to let Ezekiel Elliott’s holdout force their hand

This is a PFT piece from Charean Williams. Given her long-time connection to the team, I'd say this is as close as we get to their "official position" short of it being a press release. I think the team is stating their position on this deal through her writing:

Ezekiel Elliott appears to have drawn a line in the sand. The Cowboys have followed with a line of their own.

A source said the Cowboys are not going to let the star running back’s holdout force their hand. The team is not going to budge on its budget.

The question, then, is: Does Elliott give in, one way or the other?

Elliott didn’t report to training camp Friday with the rest of his teammates. Two days later, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said a rushing champion isn’t necessary to win a Super Bowl.

The Cowboys value Elliott, but the league doesn’t value the position.

This really could work out for the best. Zeke's own arrogance and stupidity may end up keeping Jerry from making the mistake of extending Zeke, which he seemed hell-bent on making.

I don't know what the right thing to do is. The kid could be the best running back in the league without a doubt. But you also could be a giant screw up. I thought a lot on this. I'm going to play the preseason without him, he doesn't need much practice anyways. And if I get through the preseason and like what I have that'll probably go a long way in making up my mind on how to deal with him.

Dare we be that optimistic?
:omg:

But one thing I will say, if they wanted to put any sort of a scare in Elliott's camp, signing a young, hungry back like Jay Ajayi would have done a better job of it than signing "team friend" Alfred Morris.

I think that's a really solid approach, and one I would take as well. But I would have signed Jay Ajayi rather than Morris and see what that young, hungry running back has left. I know he's not a long term answer, but he, along with the other backs, would be enough to get me through a season to figure this out. He was good enough in a timeshare for the Eagles to win a Super Bowl.

I thought the same thing. The Eagles won their Super Bowl by committee they traded 4 backup running backs. They had a Slammer for first downs. And a guy that could possibly take it to the hole. Of course this is just all speculation. But what else do we have to do at this moment

this was always obvious.
zeke has no leverage here.
as good as he is, his job doesnt even start til week 1.
this team is used ot slow starts and cares about how it finishes not how it starts so this has been absurd agent advice.

if anything zeke should be in camp but merely whispering we wont play week 1 without a deal.

going to cabo is a slap in the face to his teammates and tone deaf.

Good. Zeke's agents seem to be unreasonable in their "demands", and there really is no obligation to extend him right now.

Keep that line drawn, and let Zeke sit out if that's what he thinks he needs to do.

But if he does, the 2020 season will officially be his 4th season again.

Your move, Zeke.

Same here, but hearing and reading about all of the things happening at training camp has its perks as well. We're getting there!

I was hoping to come out a preseason like we knew what we were doing for once. I'm still looking forward to this new offencive look

But par for the course for someone who might be great at football, but not too bright otherwise. Which gives me even more pause in making that huge investment.

I consider it an investment in character too.

This is an agent issue.
Players pay them to make these calls and protect them.
This agent owns the place in Cabo and can't wait to get Zeke down there at every turn.
That's just creepy.
But also terrible optics and awful for negotiating.
I mean go up to Big Bear and train at altitude in seclusion or basically anywhere that screams "Rocky training for Drago" not more Zeke loves him some party-time.

Dak and Amari are in camp leading teammates.
That reduces Zeke's leverage and makes him look bad.
The Cowboys are offering him big money.
He could take that or he could continue to negotiate.
Teams dont early extend you at full freight.

I agree, it's not a good look. And no matter what anyone wants to say in public, I'm sure the Cowboys aren't happy about hearing the news.

Especially when they're trying to get those two priority deals done first. They'll never say anything about another man's money, but I wouldn't be too happy if someone else was trying to "jump the line" at the pay window ahead of me.

I'm soured on the guy, and would trade him away if I thought I could actually get something of value in return. But the fact is that no team in the league would pay to sign on for this headache. But I would like for that realization and then the pressure to be placed on Elliott and his agent in realizing that. Give them permission to seek a trade and see what they find out. And then let them scurry back to the negotiating table, hat in hand.

Feels like this entire article was written around the report they signed Alfred Morris. Not a whole lot of ‘insider information’ in it otherwise.

I fully expect both sides will agree on a deal. Meantime a lot of drama and fans that will be upset but in my opinion a deal will be reached and Zeke will be the starting RB for this team.

And what's your opinion on that? Do you think it's a good thing or a bad thing?
