Bart Scott: "Dak Prescott hasn't even reached Alex Smith's level"

I did, and Alex has been better. Alex’s dip in production can be attributed to Washington. And 2017 Dak isn’t the current Dak, what he’s done from 2018 to now is.

What is Dak’s excuse for yearly regressing QBR? Laziness? Lack of urgency? Good QBs don’t get worse as they approach their prime.
I am not sure about regressing. His second year was rough but it's all about wins. I am not fond of the way he won several of the games but 7-1 in the latter part of the season is pretty good. Of course I want my qb to play lights out but other factors come into play. I am still a Dak fan and hoping that everything comes together for him.

There is a similarity when you compare their intermediate-to-deep attempts in the first three quarters of games.

15+ yard targets (1st-3rd qtr only)

Prescott 71 of 166 43% 2029 yds 15 td 5 int 106.2
Smith 236 of 557 42% 7011 yds 42 td 17 int 101.9

Here's the same stat late in close games (4th qtr or OT, margin 8 points or less) over both their careers.
Prescott 24 of 52 46% 740 yds 7 td 1 int 124.2
Smith 43 of 95 45% 1274 yds 4 td 8 int 70.8

I know I know. Schrodinger’s front office.

So smart they can build an amazing roster good enough to win a title with a “bus driver”.

But not smart enough to determine if their current QB is good enough or not.

I actually don’t disagree with the idea that Dak has a lot of talent around him. He does.

I do disagree with the idea that there are these magical QB’s out there that can win super bowls without having good players around them.

I also disagree with the foolish and silly notion that some like to spread, that QB’s don’t improve beyond their 3rd year in the league. Despite the many QB’s in history that have done just that.

And again, none of what you said dispels my original comment in the thread that I was defending. Which is that Dak had a better start to his career and was a better player in his first 3 season. Than Alex Smith was. And that it took Smith years to develop to be that bus driver. And that maybe, just maybe, Dak might go from being a 12-15 level QB and continue to develop into something better given that history clearly shows that QB’s often can and do continue to improve beyond their 3rd seasons.
There is also QBs that looks good early in their career, but they never turn into solid starters. That is the big concern with Dak. Is he going to become something that he has never been before?
Airman was known for his accuracy and passing ability. Dak is not. Airman could have put up great passing numbers in another offense and I don’t think anybody questioned that.
61.5% completion rate for his career. 165 tds, 141ints. Ya, that spells accuracy.

Dak has won games when the team scored 6 points

Dak has won games when he has thrown for 0 Tds and multiple Interceptions

Dak has lost games when he had good passer ratings

Dak has won games when he had poor passer ratings

Using wins to evaluate a QB is about the dumbest thing someone can do

Then why do people here constantly say we need a better quarterback? If the team can win with a poor quarterback, then Dak is plenty good enough.

The quarterback, as I've always said, gets too much credit and too much blame for wins. Still, why do we say Aikman won 3 SBs, Brady won 6 SBs, etc? Quarterbacks are JUDGED by wins, that's all I'm saying. Don't care how good a quarterback is, if his team doesn't get the win, he's not considered a great quarterback.

You don't understand what I meant by Dak's record vs. Smiths the first 3 years, hope that clarifies it...

People say Alex Smith like Smith is king of mediocre QBs

If Dak turned out to be Alex Smith I would be more than happy

Sounds like Bart Scott is taking a page out of the Stephen A Smith playbook trying to build a career off poking the Cowboys and their players.

Wentz contract talks bout what Dak's upcoming deal will look like. Duh.
So your opinion on Wentz somehow makes Dak less of an average QB? If Dak get $10 million a year or $40 million a year, he's still nothing more than an average QB.

Alex Smith is probably Dak's ceiling. Unfortunately, you can't teach accuracy to a guy as far along as Dak is, he just doesn't have it. As long as they build a Super Bowl team around him, he has a chance to win.

Such travesties are unforgivable and must not go unpunished. :(
Bart Scott should be angrily flogged 'til he's reduced to ashes!!

If it wasn't for him being so ugly and stupid, I'd say something unkind.

His first couple of years and his last couple didn’t help those numbers. His accuracy was outstanding when he wasn’t getting sacked 10 times a game with multiple concussions. I assume you are old enough to have watched him play and you should remember that he was one of the most accurate QBs playing in his prime.

He doesn’t need to become something he has never been before though. He has stretches where he has played at a top 10 level.

He needs to make incremental improvements and become more consistent and he could be a top 10 QB in the league.

He doesn’t need to completely transform his entire game. IMO.

And again, you’re glossing over the fact that Dak as an individual was just a much better player than Smith was, early in their careers. Regardless of teams. Which was the point of my post.

You’re the one bringing up the lame “better team” argument. When if you actually watched the players play, and evaluate their play, Dak was clearly better. Alex Smith was horrendous early in his career.

Also, you bring up that the 2015 cowboys had super bowl aspirations until their franchise QB got hurt.

Yet that franchise QB who missed 2015 due to injury, didn’t play in 2016 either, now did he? That’s right because Dak played in his place and the team went 13-3. Which makes the 2015 team argument even weaker.

Again, Alex Smith was HORRIBLE. Early in his career. His third season he started 7 games and had a QB rating in the 50’s. That is god awful terrible. Smith has 1 TD and 11 ints his rookie season. Which is god awful no matter who you’re throwing to.

Trying to blame a performance that bad on the supporting cast just doesn’t hold any water.
WOW!

You guys spent the last two years blaming the o-line, the receivers, the OC, etc etc etc to defend Dak and now blaming the supporting cast doesn't hold water. LOL

I wish their was a parallel universe where a young Smith played for the Cowboys so I could laugh at all the weak emotional rationalizations as you guys defend him for doing the same thing your ripping him for now.

I brought up the 2015 team because you compared them to Smith's early teams. SF got Smith because they were on a run of suck bad enough to get them the #1 pick. The Cowboys were on the rise coming off a blown call away from the NFCC. You are seriously arguing that the quality of the support system is meaningless to the success of the QB? That's a bold choice kid.

Smith went in to a horrible situation for a young QB. Dak went into a great situation for a young QB. Which by the way reinforces my 2015 team argument not weakens it.

Dak is bigger and better at the scrambling highlight stuff. Smith is much better out of the pocket and in passing in general. And always has been.

Okay, fair. How about *not improving at the expected rate.
