It confounds me how many people fall for the Jones' shtick of negotiating in public. Jerry is counting on the fans turning on the players because most fans see players as employees and make some false equivalency of a sports contract being like a contract anywhere else in the private sector. Most fans don't realize the impact of the antitrust exception, the CBA and the short expected life span that all work to minimize the rights of the laborers. The average fan has none of those factors to deal with when they negotiate contracts.
And many here fall for it hook, line and sinker.
Without ANY government involvement, the free market value of NFL players up to now
would be drastically lower.
The NFL would be able function as 1 company and could set the salary limits that it pays to players.
The only competition with the NFL for most players would be the starting pay at Home Depot.
The NFL could set a max salary per player of 200K per year.
Eventually it would have to increase pay enough to keep another league from taking players.
- However, even the one time there was legit competition by another league, it didn't last long USFL (played 3 seasons).
Big name players would be able to make money by doing commercials, etc..
The NFL can't operate as 1 company because the anti-trust exemption would be revoked.
- The NFL should welcome a competing league.
- The NFL could then reorganize and function as 1 company.
- If they had competition, then they shouldn't be considered a monopoly.
- If the NFL is not a monopoly, then it should not need the anti-trust exemption.
