Do you let a 24 year old game changing DT go to make your malcontent RB happy?

M Collins has looked like an absolute beast in preseason. Unblockable. He has flashed throughout his career so we know he has talent. He is playing for a contract so we know the risks there. We also know of the injury history. Let's say Collins goes boom this season. 16 starts. 10+ sacks. Beastly run defense. Going rate for a top DT is mid to high teens. Donald is at $22+ but he is a top 5 player in the game so no comparison. Collins is 24 years old. 24 years old!!!. You can't sign Dak, Cooper, Zeke and Collins. Sorry you can't.

Collins playing like an All Pro changes the Zeke thoughts, no?

Thanks in advance for your views.

Got dog it, we gonna have to stop drafting so well. Its giving my heartburn thinking of all the talent that we may have to part with.

Honestly figured MC was gone next season when we drafted Tristan.

Maliek Collins has the same agent that Dak does. That tells me that he's not foregoing free agency to sign here at a discount. I had some hopes that it might happen, but I don't think there's a chance.

I think Collins balls out and is in line for huge money next year. It will be frustrating to have to watch him leave next year, but we will get small comfort in the form of a top compensatory pick the following year. Just too bad that he finally realized his potential in the year he walks out the door.

And what if Taco keeps playing like he has been this preseason. And Vander Esche. And Byron Jones. And Awuzie. And Xavier Woods. And Gallup. I don't resign Zeke if it means that we have to leave the nucleus of this team walk every time one of their contracts expire. RB's are the easiest position to replace.

Exactly. 100% correct. Victims of good drafts. Wish the NFL gave Salary Cap carve outs for drafted players.

I like Collins but calling him a game-changing DT based on a handful of pre-season snaps is ridiculous.

Agree but he is on the Demarcus Lawrence path in a lot of ways.

He's supposedly looked like one of the top 3 players in camp and it's translating to games.

D Law was always hyped in camp but it never really showed up on the field until about year 4.

He also has a problem staying healthy like Lawrence.

For the love of God read my post. I outlined the risks. I painted a hypothetical scenario where Collins balls out. I did not say he was a Game Changer today.
I did read the post, but it's a hypothetical based on him having a strong preseason. You could put any player unsigned next year in there. What if Anthony Brown has 9 picks? What if Robert Quinn has 20 sacks? What if Dak throws 50 touchdowns and 20 are to Amari? What if Jaylon gets hurt and Joe Thomas has 120 tackles?

It's not just the RB. The malcontent QB and WR want big $$$ as well.

And here's another little known Maliek Collins tidbit:

He actually had a better rookie season than Warren Sapp did.

The foot issues and position changes in this defense have stunted that growth. If both of those things are behind him, there's little reason to think he won't excel.

Looking at having a top 3 RB from a purely analytical point of view, does his performance over what a good, solid back outweigh what you lose in other areas?

On the flipside, do the performances of M. Collins and Byron over an average player at their positions outweigh having to give up a top 3 RB?

Then you have to factor in the character of the players involved in the equation. Zeke is a great back. There's no denying that, but he's a knucklehead off the field. The others keep their noses clean, but to this point their contributions don't match what Zeke gives us.

If Zeke kept his nose clean off the field, I don't think there'd be much discussion as long as his demands weren't some pie in the sky numbers.

Let me try this. Dak needs to be signed. DE is a potential issue but you have Taco, Armstrong, and Gregory there. Joe Thomas - please. You pay him a fraction of what you pay a starting DT. Brown is a 6th round pick that will not start. Collins is your starting DT. Look at Lawrence. Potentially the same career arc. All this cap talk has centered around Dak, Zeke, and Cooper. Collins has not been mentioned much. If he plays great hard decisions will need to be made.

I'm talking Collins over Zeke, easier to find a decent RB that can play right away than finding a legit DT or any position for that matter besides kicker and punter
