Turns out Zeke had enough leverage

I always figured the team would re-sign him. It wouldn't have happened until next year though. Zeke forced the issue. It sort of surprised me but I understand why he did it. Jerry could have told him to stay out. He wasn't going to negotiate. Melvin Gordon is the one with no leverage. The Chargers won't even talk with him. And Zeke probably wouldn't have had much leverage on a different team. Jerry didn't want to risk the season on a what if. In the end both parties got what they wanted. It was a win win.
This. He forced the issue a year early and I have yet to see any evidence that this same deal was offered weeks ago. The lengths some will go to not admit they were wrong is laughable.

Zeke had no leverage PA. I mean, nobody wants to hear that, I know, but he really didn't. If Zeke would have waited a year, he would have. He could have then just sat out and still been eligible for FA but because he didn't wait a year, he screwed himself and left himself no leverage. If he had waited, he would have gotten more money simply by waiting. To me, Zeke screwed himself. Jerry wanted him to wait but as far back as a year ago, Jerry was already talking about a new deal this year so I can't really agree that it would have been next year. End of day, Zeke really could not have just sat out this season. He was never, ever going to do that. I just think Zeke and his craptastic agent did it all wrong. But hey, I'm not going to quibble over who did or said what. It's done and it's a good deal for both sides so I'm happy with that.

That's because teams fear the Charger's passing game with Rivers more than they do the running game and Gordon. Not here though.

STOP IT ALREADY!!!!!!! If you were in the camp of "Zeke has no leverage", you were wrong plain and simple. ZEKE IS THE HIGHEST PAID RUNNING BACK IN NFL HISTORY. Mr. Rocky Arceneaux's phone is probably ringing off the hook right now with the job he did, they didn't do any talking or negotiating in the media the let the Joneses do all that.

He got Jerry to give him what he wanted. It wouldn't have happened without the holdout. That's the definition of having leverage.

How do we know what Zeke wanted? I mean, in all honesty, this contract is pretty much what Jerry and Stephen lined out from the start. There may be a few little things here and there but it's essentially the deal they initially offered. I am not sure what it is that Zeke was asking for that the team "gave up" in this deal?

No, it doesn't.

The contract is what was offered weeks ago. Z finally agreed.
Funny how even 105.3 The Fan (not that it matters) agrees that the 50 mil guaranteed is good for only 4 years (prime years) of the 6 year deal. It was a great contract for both sides. Win win. Unless you have an agenda. If so, go pound sand. Lol

I haven't seen anything that says they were offering $50 million guaranteed or anywhere close, early on.

I think it was a pretty good deal for both sides. Jerry gets the headlines. Garrett gets the Ewok. Zeke gets security. Stephen gets some outs if he needs them down the line. Fans get to watch the team with offseason turmoil in the rearview. Trolls get to act like paying good players helps their sorry teams. Talking heads get to point to fake numbers tacked on at the end to furrow their brows.

I agree with this. That was really always my biggest thing. It was never that I didn't want to pay Zeke. It was always that I thought the deal that was offered to him initially was really a good deal and more then fair. IDK, it's water under the bridge at this point. I'm good with whatever.
