He is on the firing line only in your imagination and those who refuse to see the obstacles he overcame to build a dominating team for the long term. Yes, Jerry, McCoy, and others got the players but Jason built the team and the culture capable of bringing the best out of these players.
And yes, I am talking GM, no matter how unlikely. Jason knows how to evaluate players on par with their scouting department which is why he has far more say than he is given credit for. He is the son of a career NFL scout, the brother of the Cowboys former director of Pro Scouting, he stood next to Jimmy Johnson during games for much of his time with the Cowboys as a player. Jason Garrett knows talent. He was integral in the drafting of Dak Prescott.
Will Stephen do it? I don’t know but it would be a great move. Of course Stephen would still play a key role within the actual football part of operations, he would certainly be the go to guy in terms of contracts and salary cap. I think Stephen, Kellen and Jason could form a management team that could possibly rival the triumvirate of Schram, Landry, and Brandt.
I’m not going to reverse the biased opinion of critics whose credibility is based on Jason’s failing, despite the fact that he has succeeded. Despite salary cap issues, injuries to key players, poor contract decisions by Jerry, and other issues, Jason Garrett has created a winning team and a winning environment for several seasons.
When Jason is the Head Coach of the Super Bowl champions there will still be fans calling for his head. That’s okay. Tom Landry went through the same. After 9 seasons Landry’s playoff record was 1-3.
