Still, the Dallas Cowboys have yet to iron out a long-term contract extension with their franchise quarterback and that’s a little troubling considering he’s technically a free agent after this season. Dak has played like an MVP at times this season, but along with the rest of the team, he’s had his share of struggles.

We heard that Prescott turned down an offer for $30M per year and that he reportedly asked for $40M. We haven’t heard much about Dak’s contract demands since, but an interesting nugget did pop up on Wednesday.

NFL Network’s Jane Slater recently started a podcast (The ‘Boys And Girl Podcast) and on the latest episode gave us a little bit more information on exactly where negotiations might be at the moment.

“Since then I’ve been told that he’s come down. The number is closer to 33, 35 ish. But for whatever reason they’re still not able to get this deal done.”

As everyone else has said, it’s likely the length of the contract that they haven’t figured out. Not the price. Everyone else is signing 6+ year deals, when the ideal situation would be anywhere from 3-4 years, so you can cash in on the next “all time high” deals. Dallas likely wants him on a 6+ year deal, while Dak and Co are probably trying for 4 years at most.

I think we should just wait until the end of season. Lets see how Dak does with a tougher schedule and both offensive tackles and Amari playing.

He should take 30 million and run as fast as he can. I doubt he replicates his success on any other NFL team, and I think Jerry knows that, and knows, or at least he thinks no other team will pay that.

We'll see.

Look, I like Dak, but I don’t see how you can justify that kind of money for a guy who can’t carry the team without a loaded roster. He still hasn’t proven that he’s anything more than an elite bus driver. He’ll put up All-Pro numbers when everything is going well, and when it’s not he’ll post a QB rating in the 70s and 80s.

Embarrassing that the NFL has allowed QB contracts to get like this. A freakin' bus driver, a middling QB, can get elite QB money.

Eventually owners have to start understanding that giving QBs these big contracts hurt more than they help in the long term.

Once again, if I am Dak Prescott, or his reps, I sign for NOTHING less than fair market value. Period. End of discussion. Not one penny less. The Stafford, Cousins, Goff, and Wentz of world literally makes more in one game than Prescott has made in 3 years.

And that includes contract length. If the going rate is 3 or 4 years...I am not signing, if I am Dak, a contract that goes more than 3 or 4 years.

Jerry and Co. figured out a way to get Romo his money...they can figure out how to do the same for Dak.

IMO I don't think enough people talk about the LENGTH of the contract.

Let's say for arguments sake, Dallas signed Dak to a 7 year, $280 million contract ($40 M Year). By the time the contract hits the end, Dak could be the 15th highest paid QB in the NFL, especially with another CBA coming up for negotiation soon.

Hey, I understand Dallas' position. More years = easier to manipulate for Cap Room, if needed.

I also understand Dak's position. In 6 years, the AAV for a Top QB could very well be $50 million+.

Impossible? Well 6 years ago, in April of 2013, Aaron Rodgers became the highest paid player in the NFL with a 5 year, $110 million ($22 AAY). So in 6 years, the highest paid went from $22 M to $35 M. So it is not inconceivable to see the highest paid player in the NFL going from $35+ to reaching or exceeding $50 AAV by 2025.

I don't blame either side nor am I mad at either side.

Both are doing what they think is best for them. And if for whatever reason it does not work out well for the Cowboys and/or Dak, then they also have no one else to blame then themselves. Because in the end BOTH SIDES will need to have agreed on a new contract or for both parties to seek opportunities elsewhere.

I don't know about anyone else, but I find it quite interesting.

The 40m was debunked by multiple sources and the counter offer was 34m back in April. So he hasnt came down at all. This is our FO leaking the 40m to get the public on their side, then leaking that he has came down to 33-35m so it makes them look like they "won".

With one of the few things that most fans seem to agree on for the Cowboys, that is the lack any true NFL Quality coaching / schemes, I find it odd that anyone is so quick to say that Dak cannot replicate the success he has had in Dallas anywhere else.

Put him with the right coach / scheme, I think Dak could easily surpass the success he has seen in Dallas. But at the same time, put him in a bad situation, then Dak could be out of the league in a few years.

But that is what you could say about 70% of the QBs that have ever played in the NFL. Then there are 15% that never would have never been successful (think Ryan Leaf, JaMarcus Russell) and 15% that would have had success regardless of the system they played in (think Peyton Manning, Dan Marino).

But I have no doubt that Dak can succeed in the NFL as long as he does not move on to a terrible team / situation.
