Is Dak the greatest QB bargain in NFL history?

Dak signed a four year, $2.7 million contract with the Cowboys following his selection as the 135th pick in the 2016 NFL draft.

This year he will earn just over 1% of the team’s cash payout.

My question is, has there ever been a bigger QB bargain in the history of the NFL over a 4-year stretch than one the Cowboys have gotten with Dak? I don’t think so, but if I’m wrong please tell me.

It bothers me that the team has signed players of much lower ability to huge contracts while they haven’t yet gotten a deal done with their best player.

They should have won a Super Bowl during this 4-year window because they won’t ever get a bargain like this again. Poor coaching and management are hard to overcome.

Tom Brady won two Superbowls with two Superbowl MVP awards his first four years for a little under $5 million. That actually included the first year of his second contract since he signed a 3 year deal after getting drafted.

So no it really isn't the biggest QB bargain in NFL history. (His first three years, including a superbowl win, cost the Patriots about $865,000 total).

Tom Brady was drafted in 2000 (199th pick) and signed a 3 year contract for $864,000. But his contract was redone in 2002 (5 years, $30.5 million with $10 million signing bonus) after he guided the Patriots to their first Super Bowl win at the end of the 2001. So Brady was a bargain for 2 years.

Russell Wilson was drafted in 2012 (75th pick) snd signed a 4 year contract for $2.99. But his contract contract was redone in 2015 (4 years, $87.6 million making him, at the time, the second highest paid player in the NFL). So Wilson was a bargain for 3 years.

My question remains, has there ever been been a bigger QB bargain over a 4-year period than Dak?

Dak's why we've got so much money to pay people right now. For the guys who wondered why we didn't go all-in in FA on Dak's rookie deal... this is why.

Yesterday's loss aside, I have faith that the talent on the roster will sort itself out. The loss yesterday basically comes down to coaching - God knows how many wasted 1st down runs, running twice when Dak was gutting the Vikings D, Tavon Austin's fair catch. This team should be in good shape roster wise for another three years... the only thing holding it back is coaching.

Threads like these show many of you are just Dak fans rather than Cowboys fans at this point.

We just lost a game and you’re talking about how Dak is a bargain? Tom Brady was a bargain. Warner was a bargain. Wilson was a bargain. What is the connection with all those QBs?

This fanboyism over a single player is embarrassing. Dak hasn’t won ****.

Depends on what you consider a bargain. I would rather 2 superbowl wins with the QB earning both Superbowl MVPs for $5 million over Dak's last 4 years at about $3 million. That is not a slight on Dak mind you, but two superbowl wins for an average salary of $1.2 million kinda trumps zero for an average of $700,000. (IMO of course)

Unless you do not think a Superbowl victory is worth that much I suppose.

By the way with game playing incentives, Dak will make a little over $4 million his first 4 years. His base salary this year is now over $2 million. (Or $1 million less than Brady made his first 4)

Dak is just shutting his mouth and letting his playing on the field speak. They should signed him earlier in the season, because if he keeps these numbers up he will be worth a lot. We need to sign Amari and him ASAP.

I don’t disagree that a Super Bowl is priceless, but Dak has played well enough to win one.

I’m not saying he’s Brady, since Brady is in a class by himself compared to all QB’s and all NFL players.

But winning a Super Bowl requires a good team at all levels, including coaching, which is something we lack.

I’m still not convinced there has been a bigger bargain over a 4 year period. The fact that we haven’t been able to capitalize on that is disappointing. I feel like we missed an opportunity that won’t happen again.

You just said Brady is in a class by himself. Well he won 2 superbowls his first 4 years, won 2 superbowl MVPs, won 73% of his teams games not counting his 6-0 playoff record (Dak is at 64% BTW), was top 10 in passing each year he started during that time frame (Dak was not in 2017 or 2018).

Read that line again and ask yourself who was the bigger bargain if they were just $250,000 per year off? An answer it honestly.

So which is it, is Brady so good that we do not consider him? In which case how is Dak the better bargain? If we do consider him read the above again.

Again, this is not a slight on Dak at all, he has been a great QB. I agree we have wasted him thus far just like we did Romo. But give me Brady and the above anytime for an extra $1 million over 4 years... that is the real bargain.

Brady was a bargain for 2 years. After that he received a contract which reflected his value. Yes, it was still a great deal for the Patriots, but not the bargain it was during his rookie contract.

Dak has had a contract for 4 years that makes him the biggest bargain at the position over a similar time span.

Just look at this year alone, which is Dak’s highest paid year. He’s earning 1.06% of the team’s salary cap even though he’s the team MVP.

Can you name a QB who played as well over 4 years for less than $5 million total over that period? Or for less than 1% of the team’s payout over that 4 year period?

I would go with Russell Wilson. I believe they actually won a Super Bowl while he was on his rookie contract.
