What if it's Ron Rivera?

I have a feeling Jerry will want to make a splash with his next hire, like he did with Parcells.
Who would that be? Urban? That's about the only big name with skins on the wall I can think of, and even he has no pro experience.

I have the feeling that Rivera would do his best to keep the offensive coaching staff intact. And I'm sure Jerry would love that.

Then, if you could keep Moore around to groom for anotheryear or two, Jerry could then consider him as the next guy depending on how things were going at that point.

I agree on the offensive staff and Rivera seems like a Jerry kind of hire. At least if he was the guy we’d be rid of Marinelli and his crap scheme. We could do better than Rivera but we could do worse. I just don’t see Meyers or Riley wanting to come work for Jerry.

The only difference between him and JG is a SB appearance. This would not be an upgrade.

I think another is that Rivera has actually proven himself to be an effective coordinator.

And that 'Super Bowl appearance' is a huge distinction by itself.

He's certainly not atop the 'wish list', but I would be nearly certain that he's on the Joneses' list.

Jason Garrett: 78-62, 3 division titles

Ron Rivera: 76-63-1, 3 division titles, 1 Super Bowl appearance

The Super Bowl appearance is a distinct difference. Garrett was an effective coordinator as well IIRC in his OC/play calling years only 2 out of 9 of those years was his offense not in the top 10 in the league. Garrett wasn't a bad play caller some just think because he's failed as a HC that he sucks at everything which just isn't true.

You know what's also true? That he had to have a 'run game coach' hold his hand throughout his tenure as coordinator. That's not a real coordinator, that's half of one.

And another feather in Rivera's cap is that he coordinated a Bears defense to the Super Bowl as well. He's not great, but he's more accomplished than Garrett.

Not arguing that. Rivera is the defensive version of Norv Turner. Really good coordinator not a good HC. Again, my point is that Rivera wouldn't be upgrading the HC spot because he's not much better than Garrett as a HC. Now if you want to talk about him being our next DC I'm interested in that because frankly I've had my fill of the Rod/Richard show.

No disagreements there. Rivera wouldn't be a huge improvement, just an improvement.

Now that Rivera has been let go by the Panthers, the possibility exists that he could in fact be the next head coach of the Cowboys. I think that there are better hires and I think there are worse hires, but I'm interested to hear the thoughts from the forum and what your reaction would be if Jerry did hire Rivera as this team's next head coach?
he could be a DC candidate perhaps.....lets assume we get Greg Roman as HC/OC and Rivera as DC...that would be great.

Why isn't he a good HC? Do you have to have multiple SB wins to be considered a good HC?
3 winning seasons in 9 years. One of his playoff teams was 7-8-1 not much success there outside of the 1 SB appearance.

Is he a hard-nosed disciplinarian? Because that is what we need at this point. I don't like his O, but I like his D. Would he let someone else run the O?

I agree. But I don't think you can get Rivera as your DC. I think he will have other Head Coach offers.

EXACTLY..it would be a lateral move..no progress whatsoever.
No, it would be grossly different.

RR knows how to build a D. No more lightly built rushmen manning every position on the LOS. When he lost Star to FA, he went out and got Poe. He signs people like Kyle Love for backups, who would start on our DL.
