What do you think he’d have cost at that point? Or are you saying your pretty happy with Elliott’s extension?

Zeke is an elite player and his contract "is what it is", it wasn't going to be less than that. Its also structured in a pretty team friendly way upfront with a low signing bonus.

We know the cost of Hitchens, it would have taken more than 45 Million over five years (and we lose a 4th round comp pick). Hitchens is a good, not great player. Jaylon played like a great player last year and regressed to play like a good player this year. I'll Jaylon every time, even losing his first two seasons.

I'm glad Hitchens has done well but he got 45 Million over 5 years. Plus we got the comp pick back. Would he have started over Jaylon, LVE or Sean Lee?

I’m liking your post simply because you said “would he have” instead of “would he of”.

That dude who payed linebacker for us that quit cause he like to chill and drink that purple drank was a lot better. He’s was pretty dang good

Dude could have been great, if he just wanted to be. He was one, that I really wish would have straightened his head out. I really wanted to see his potential.

Hmm. See, I think we massively over drafted Zeke and then massively overpaid him. I think Jaylon was a bad risk on a guy who played well last season and who’s been exploited this season.

Hitchens I would have extended sooner if we possibly could have. Letting him get to market at all was where the mistake was. But then, maybe we didn’t have a choice in the matter.

3 pages in and nobody's mentioned that Hitchens has been trash in KC?

Between Hitchens making $9M a year and Jaylon making $13M a year, give me Jaylon 10 times out of 10.

Steve Spagnuolo learned under one of the best 4-3 DCs ever in Jim Johnson. His blitzes are legendarily scary.

If we’re intent on keeping the 4-3 either get the stud DL like SF has at every position or go to a chaos causing 4-3 like Spagnuolo. Yes you will give up some big plays every now and then but if you have a good offense they should even out and put you ahead with turnovers caused by an aggressive scheme.

Put Jaylon with a real coaching staff and hed be more consistent.
I think you're onto something there I'm not ready to write him off completely yet or a lot of these players for that matter it's hard for me to believe that they're that bad? first of all I think the scheme is bad too many other issues to discuss at this time pretty much everybody here knows them they're pretty obvious

The deuce you say!

Joking, Zeke and Jaylon have both had bad seasons and there are likely multiple reasons for that. But Zeke is an elite player and Jaylon very easily could become one. Hitchens was a solid starter and a great return on a 4th round pick (pizzing off Risen Star was just a bonus) but if you want to go deep in the playoffs you need elite players, not solid ones.

I miss hitch....he plays with fire and toughness......what i remember of him is that he played 1 week after a bad high ankle sprain, and played well helping the boys win a playoff game.....

and best of all......no nonsense swipe and clear eye bs.....

He actually did sound fundamental linebacker things.

I posted that the other day, picture the defense this year with Rolando McClain and David Irving completely healthy and motivated. McClain, LVE and Jaylon would cover half the field by themselves and Sean Lee would be the only All Pro LB in a backup role.

He had all the attributes and he was tough. Didn’t mind mixing it up and getting physical

Coaching matters.

Is it possible that Jaylon Smith be even better if he were in KC and that system?

+1

yes coaching matters a huge deal and difference, so does supporting cast in player personnel. KC Chiefs also has a huge difference maker in DT Chris Jones who is
just a monster stud in the middle. hard to believe he was just a 2nd round pick ..but what a deal.

i had hope Trysten Hill would be such a steal bargain for us too. (sigh)
while he has had a very disappointing, lackluster rookie year .. i really want to see what Hill can do with a better DL coach
and surrounding talent.

and a new coach that finally believes in a big, stout run stuffing stud that can occupy two blockers and is so immovable and disruptive that he keeps the Lbs clean
and more able to flow to the action without OL blockers constantly in their faces.

What's it going to be then, eh?

The dissonance caused by the Cowboys not being as good as everyone thought is really driving people crazy.

the late jim johnson was an awesome blitzer -

though gambling dangerous in how they leave vulnerable opens, but is blitz scheme and packages was such that it's well designed and you never can get a
clue of when and where it will be coming in from

But spagnola's units have been much maligned in his past teams as DC. heck i wouldn't mind a Saints 4-3 scheme - the first big key no matter who the DC is is successfully being physical enough to stop the run.

And we have not been strong, stout and disciplined enough under Marinelli.

This sounds crazy but I think I would take these two guys over Jaylon Smith and LVE if it meant Dallas would also have an impact DT.
you are crazy...its throwing the baby out with the bath water....knee jerk reaction from cowboys fans...but typical

Dude RoMc and Irving were sooo damn talented! They were constantly around the ball and making impact plays. I wish those nuts in their heads could've been screwed on tight because those are the types of talents you build around! Such a waste of talent!
