Apparently mccarthy during his tenure was never really given a top defense or running game to work with either, and he still led them to playoffs 9 of 13 seasons.

Really? You already should know the answer to that question. Jerry makes all GM decisions including coaches & players.

At the end of the day, I'm really not happy about the choice, but I'm willing to give him a chance - and I'll certainly take him over Garrett.

This can't turn into another decade long experiment, though. He should get 2-3 years to take us deep into the playoffs, or he's out the door.

not really. I was shocked the jets didn't hire him last year. I felt like they blew a chance to have a good stable head coach for a change.

Improvement in which way?
Unless Jerry tells everyone that he is letting McCarthy hire his own staff then improvement can’t happen. A HC without authority is going to fail no matter what his name is.
