Why would McCarthy choose Dallas?

I never said they don’t work on their craft. I said that expecting a QB to “develop” into something else after 4 years of starting is naive.

Oh, I don’t expect Dak to turn into Romo. But he doesn’t have to be with Zeke and our playmakers.

What does that even mean? I know Garrett wasn't successful, but the Cowboys won a decent amount under him. Three conference titles in five years. You talk like we're discussing the Browns here.

You mean division titles? Throw a parade!

The entire franchise thinks they’re the cats nads. In reality, we’re a bottom tier franchise on the field. Jerry will continue to propagate Dallas Cowboys greatness. But it’s not true, only myth.

Garrett's record was 85-67 with only one losing season in 9 when Romo was hurt. A third of the teams in the NFL would love to have that record for the next decade.

Best chance to win now.
Best chance to build an insurmountable legacy. Take this team to a Super Bowl and he is a first ballot HOFer.

QB is an anti-AR guy that says the right thing and is coach-able.
RB is best he's seen and Ricky Williams once won him ASST coach of the year honors.

There have been all kinds of debates about the Joneses making Mike McCarthy the newest coach of the Dallas Cowboys. Some love the move, some hate it. Some think it was too quick. Some wanted the latest hot name or a college standout instead.

However, last night I started thinking about why McCarthy would want to come to Dallas. After all, there's no doubt that any potential coach had heard plenty about Jerry's meddling ways. The organizational failure of Jones has been discussed pretty much ad nauseam. Choosing Dallas means having to put up with Jerry's hands-all-over approach of owning a team.

McCarthy clearly had other teams interested in interviewing, yet he picked the Cowboys as much as the Cowboys picked him. It could have just been a money thing. It could even be the high-profile nature of the job. However, I think there also could have been a few other reasons.

1) McCarthy, like most of us, could easily see that this team underachieved under Garrett. He's not in a rebuilding situation, but one where he only should need to add a few parts to possibly achieve immediate success.

2) This could probably be added to one because it's saying the same thing: Coaches know they can't win without talent and key pieces are in place here. He doesn't have to find a quarterback. He doesn't have to find a stud running back. He's got four very solid pieces to the offensive line if they can stay healthy. If we bring back Cooper, he's got a very good receiving corps. On offense, the only real questions are starting tight end and left guard (and we got decent play there from both Williams and Su'a-Filo, plus we haven't even seen Connor McGovern yet).

Defense is a little more sketchy. We've got one very good defensive end, two very good linebackers and a few decent secondary players. However, McCarthy is an offensive coach so I'm sure the offense was the draft.

3) Despite all the negatives about Jones, coaches know that he will get them what they ask for. I know the team has changed some on that, going cheaper in free agency, but I feel some of that was influenced by Garrett and his process, and the right coach will be able to produce a shopping list and get Jerry to fill it. If McCarthy tells Jerry that he needs a certain player, I just can't see Jones being able to resist getting him.
Somewhat agree.

I saw where we will have $82+mil in cap space for 2020.

And depending on any new CBA being implimented..

there will be two tags available to use.

This is a huge break for the present.

Do not know if that is a green light for shopping for FAs or not.

I think we are sort of tight with our own roster resigning them.

But defense is definitely priority right now.

What Nolan decides at DL, CB and safety will make or break any real chance to improve.

The defense got beat by teams with average QBs all year. It was something that clearly was too much for the offense to overcome.

So no playoffs unless this gets fixed.

Dream all we want. Ain't going to happen.

Scoring 30+ pts and giving up 38 is not going to get it.

We will see.

Great post. McCarthy doesn't have to go out and find the talent to make it a young team on the rise, its already on the roster. Plus they will have a ton of salary cap room even after resigning Dak, Cooper and probably Byron Jones.

And Jerry's micromanagement is offset by the fact he will spend every dollar available to make the team better. Its also less of a factor for a hardazz like McCarthy than it was for a younger guy like Garrett that owed a big part of his rise to Jerry in the first place.

4) And the most important one is that Jerry has given MM full reign over on the field operations including getting rid of or adding players of his choice, hiring or firing of coaches without input, deciding who starts and who doesn't, etc.

God I hope this is true

Did anyone else offer him a job?

He interviewed with the Panthers and Giants and the Browns were trying to get him to interview. The Giants were trying to get him back for a second interview when he signed with Dallas.

When he had success at GB he had the best pass blocking Oline In football, Jordy, Cobb, and Jones. And Lacy at RB. Now no one is comparing Rogers with Dak, but that’s what Mike does. Develop QB’s.

Yeah, I think he sees the potential, which is exciting to him. Not saying other teams he could have chosen don't have potential, but there may be more work to do with their offenses to get them where he wants than there is here.

I just hope the guy doesn't think that all the talent he need is already in place or he is in for a big surprise. This place is in desperate need of a good purge.

He made a huge leap in his footwork last year. Mike will develop that more. And if you think these QB’s don’t work on this their entire careers you’re nuts. Go watch Brady in the offseason. Manning. On and on.
Don't need to go that far.

Romo always talked about how he tried to improve something every offseason.

I think #3 is all Stephen.. FA talent acquisition has been relegated to department store types since his rise in the org. otherwise agree.

This organization has had several shifts in philosophy over the years, and a lot of it was predicated on the coach. With Jimmy, the team was wheeling and dealing to build a team, making trades all over the place. After Jimmy, the philosophy was to try to add a few big-ticket FAs to those aging championship pieces. That essentially continued to be the philosophy until Parcells arrived. Then, it was primarily signing lower-cost friends of Bill to supplement the draft picks with a high-ticket signing mixed in here and there.

Then, during Garrett's tenure, the philosophy became don't pay age after Ware and some others started having trouble staying healthy, and then don't pay an arm and a leg for free agents essentially after the Carr signing didn't turn out that well. They still take chances, though, for the right price (signing Hardy, trading for Cooper knowing his contract situation). Again, I think some of the philosophy shift had to do with Garrett taking a process approach to fielding a team. If it's going to take time to eventually field a team like last year's, why spend a lot of money on short-term help or keep aging vets around while the team is being formed?

I think where the philosophy goes from here will be largely shaped by McCarthy's approach. And I'm sure that was a topic of discussion between the two sides. I don't expect a full-on shift, but I do think there will be some modifications.

When you have the opportunity to work for talent hoarders like Jerry and Stephen, you don't ask questions.
