Why would McCarthy choose Dallas?

This organization has had several shifts in philosophy over the years, and a lot of it was predicated on the coach. With Jimmy, the team was wheeling and dealing to build a team, making trades all over the place. After Jimmy, the philosophy was to try to add a few big-ticket FAs to those aging championship pieces. That essentially continued to be the philosophy until Parcells arrived. Then, it was primarily signing lower-cost friends of Bill to supplement the draft picks with a high-ticket signing mixed in here and there.

Then, during Garrett's tenure, the philosophy became don't pay age after Ware and some others started having trouble staying healthy, and then don't pay an arm and a leg for free agents essentially after the Carr signing didn't turn out that well. They still take chances, though, for the right price (signing Hardy, trading for Cooper knowing his contract situation). Again, I think some of the philosophy shift had to do with Garrett taking a process approach to fielding a team. If it's going to take time to eventually field a team like last year's, why spend a lot of money on short-term help or keep aging vets around while the team is being formed?

I think where the philosophy goes from here will be largely shaped by McCarthy's approach. And I'm sure that was a topic of discussion between the two sides. I don't expect a full-on shift, but I do think there will be some modifications.
Time will tell, but the shift you noted and assigned to the changing coaches, I think the shift in philosophy occurred as Stephen took on more responsibility. Jerry is ALWAYS willing to pay. Stephen notsomuch.

Did anyone else offer him a job?
He took himself off the market last year and according to reports, he had interest from the other teams in the hunt this year. Whether CAR, CLE or NYG would have made an offer, who knows? But he turned down CLE last year and they fell back on Kitchens as a stop gap.

The NFL loves to recycle so he would have gotten a job with one of these teams. CAR is rolling the dice with a college HC, your college HC. NYG passed on signing him to the same deal CAR gave him. If I am the CAR, I am not happy he played my deal and I imagine Rhule is not happy that got out.

Well, this is what one article said was the reason:

“It was like love at first sight,” a source with knowledge of the dynamics between Jones and McCarthy said when explaining the quick move by the Cowboys to make McCarthy the new head coach.

They are still the best unit on this team. The run blocking wasn't as good the first half of the season, but the pass blocking was much improved this season.

Its going to be something to watch next year. I think Frederick was about 80% of his past form so he clearly has room to improve. Martin was still excellent and Collins improved a lot. Conner Williams should continue to improve and having him for a full season would obviously help, but Tyron Smith is still a big question mark.

I think McGovern as a starting quality backup is going to be a big help also, Bob Sturm did a review after the draft where he considered McGovern a better prospect than Conner Williams.

He took this job because of his perception that this talent level affords him the best opportunity for success. The offenses at CAR, CLE and NYG are problematic and I do not think he wanted to take on Mayfield. I think that's why he turned them down last year.

With his background with QB's, I think the fact that Prescott is the most coach friendly one is a lure to him. His signing guarantees they are keeping Prescott. He's not going to argue with his HC on the sideline of a game because he's not happy. Prescott is a team QB and that's a HC/OC's dream. Daniel Jones might be that but Cam Newton isn't and Mayfield is a problem just waiting to happen.

Possibly. The biggest thing is they weren't seeing the payoff compared to the money they were spending. Did Stephen use that to get his dad on board? Maybe, but Jerry goes with the wind, so it will be interesting to see what direction that takes him with McCarthy. He's a natural wild-catter who has been suppressing that instinct. Can McCarthy ignite it again and does he even want to? He could feel the same way about free agency for all I know.

Stacked team w/ a bright young talent at Qb, who is very coachable BTW. All this team needs is some tweaking, and we're looking at possible super bowl contention. Jason either didn't know enough to take the next step or wasn't allowed to. And I don't even care which it was anymore.

What I do know is that under McC, the Packers paid much attention to both S and DT, not to mention the OL.

I never said they don’t work on their craft. I said that expecting a QB to “develop” into something else after 4 years of starting is naive.
There's some truth in that, but there's also a huge factor about a coach putting a QB in the best position to succeed. Ryan, Goff, Mayfield, Foles, all suddenly looked much better under a new HC.

...along with all the Americas team incentives. Jerry is generous to people, I'm sure McCarthy saw that as well. Its a win, win for most coaches.

Besides is perfect timing for Mike. Jerry is getting older and the fact he allowed Mike to bring in his own staff if he wishes. Tells you Jerry is taking a new side of just letting things be.

Great pay check, no accountablity, no standards.

whats not to like.

Nothing will be asked of him, who cares whats on his roster, the PR machine will make many believe they are better than they are, no standards by the fans most are happy with missing the playoffs than expecting it. Its a beaten franchise with a paycheck.

franchise QB? He wasnt so franchise against the bears, Eagles, Pats, Saints, Packers, or Bills. But damn if he wasnt the GOAT against the crappy teams we played.

Packers? You mean the game where he almost threw for 500 yards? And and I recall him destroying the Eagles.

With all due respect, you can do this with any QB. "Hey look, they had a few bad games!" You are the type who screamed about Romo when he was here and now cries over his absence.

The NFL regards Dak much higher than Dallas fans do. Be fascinating to see just how good Dak is under a new regime.
