Safest Bet: Irvin

Most Potential: Hayes

Hunch/Gamble: T.O.

No particular order or ranking, but I suppose it might depend on how the rest of the team had been constructed and was being coached at the time this hypothetical draft occurred.

Slightly misleading given that seasons were shorter back then.
But his yards per game did fall off once out of his 20s.

Seasons were a couple a games shorter back then but Irvin had five straight 1200+ yard seasons with a QB who passed for less than 3000 yards 6 times during Irvin’s career. Irvin had a 1600 yard season in 95 despite Aikman passing for less than 3400 yards.

Alworth, Hayes, Owens, Irvin, Pearson, in that order. Alworth and Owens weren't drafted so I don't know if they count in this exercise.

Hayes and Irvin....round 1 leaders

Pearson and Cooper middle of the round

Dez second half of round 1....he was amazing, but I want him to round out his game before I take him in the top half.

Alworth only played one season with the Cowboys and that was the final season of his career. He’ll always be remembered as a San Diego Charger. I wouldn’t be picking a WR who’s prime years were during the 60s to play in todays game. Not saying he couldn’t do it but the game has changed a lot since the 1960s. The NFL was a lot closer to what it is now when Irvin was playing than when those other receivers were playing. Irvin had the size, strength and passion to play in todays game.

Ah but, the 1960's players were like sledge hammers, tough as they come. Todays players may be better athletes, but would run for the sidelines after contact with the old guys.

I would be interesting to see how Bullet Bob Hayes' speed would compare in today's game. No doubt he was one of the best all time Cowboys receivers.

3 good options
I think Hayes in today’s nfl would be really something
TO was a great player
But I think Irvin because of what he brings as a leader
This team is soft and need some fire like Irvin brought

I'd take TO over Dez.

First 5 years:
Dez scored 56 TD's
Owen scored 43 TD's

If we're talking at there peak and longevity I'd take Owen. If we're talking draft as a rookie in the 1st round and the you lose them.....I'd take Dez.

Don't know if we're thinking home grown talent started and developed by the Cowboys, but if so I would go:

1. Irvin 2. Hayes 3. Pearson 4. Bryant 5. Hill

Tough call between Irvin and Hayes, but that's how I would rank them. Irvin and Hayes would be the only homegrown guys I would pick in the top 5 knowing what we know now as transcending talents. Pearson, Bryant, and Hill great players too and guys anyone would be happy with out of the 1st round

From WRs in Cowboys history that came here as free agents sign or trade.

The only two clear choices would be Owens and Cooper.

Galloway, Rocket, Glenn, and Key Johnson could be in consideration for talent or length of career of production. But taking an objective look:

Galloway no, never a pro bowler, all pro, and despite a long career never lived up to his hype. No on Rocket, too late of a bloomer to justify the pick.

Terry Glenn was a nice receiver, but often injured and made one pro bowl. Keyshawn Johnson is probably the closest to a 1st rounder of this group.

For bonus coverage no on Miles Austin. We all forget about Jimmy Smith even though he never had a catch for the Cowboys he would be a clear 1st rounder. Just gave up on him too soon.

Forgot about Keyshawn. Williams from Det was a beast too in his prime.

The players today are also tough as nails. Players today are so much bigger and faster than the players of the 60s and 70s which is why there’s been so many player safety rules added. Tackles that are injuring players today didn’t injure as many players years ago. They’ve had to soften the game with all these players safety rules to try and avoid serious injury.

Even Prime would get scorched by Hayes
