How does Frederick retiring affect the salary cap?

Isn't that the basis of the cap system and being able to spread signing bonuses and the like over the entire contract? Can't have it both ways.
Again I'm talking specifically about a player retiring. It seems to be treated the same way as if a player is cut or traded from a cap hit stand point.

But the whole reason there is dead money is because there were previous cap benefits from bonus proration. You have to account for every dollar paid. You open that box of relieving cap from retirements and you’ll be seeing 34 year olds getting 5 year deals with big bonuses just to get around the cap.

This is just an unfortunate case of a young player getting sick and just not getting back to full strength and making a life over football choice. If we started making concessions for every possibility, the cap would be even more complicated than it already is.

It doesn’t help them this season.

It is interesting In that the cowboys had a ton of cap space designated to the OL. So going forward. It’s an opportunity to have less money locked up on the OL and more towards other position groups around the team.

Heck our te core has been stealing money from us for years and has been nothing but hype and failure and nobody is crying about them or their endorsements. Lol. It looks like Dak has the opportunity to sell some groceries since #82 is D.O.N.E.

THANK GOD THE EVERYDOWN TE ERA IS DONE. WHEN YA GOT THE SORRIEST TE CORE IN THE LEAGUE YOU DONT FEATURE THEM ON PASSING DOWNS UNLESS THEY HAVE SPONSORS

I'd take him to court and sue him for every dime I could get! He has done us like Ratliff did!!!!!! Stolen millions from our cap !! And team!!!!!! Now he can go hang out with Ratliff and the two of them can laugh about how much they stole from Jerry, Crawford belongs there too, as well as a few others.
You're going to compare Fred Beard with those two?! He gave us everything he had on every play. If that's the way the contract worked, oh well. He was the best Center in team history. Don't be petty. The guy has been through more than any of us will know.

What difference does it make if a player retires or has a career ending injury. The signing bonus is spread out over the life of the contract. What would it look like to sign Tom Brady to a 10 year contract right now assuming he would only play for 2 years?

Exactly. He's literally been paid the restructure bonus as a cash payment in 2017.

You can't take it off the books in 2020 regardless of cause, he's already pocketed the money......

Ok let me tutor you on logic. If you present an cc argument, it's not credible untill you present credible evidence to show what U argue is likely or proven. You have done neither in this statement of urs. What you call humanity is saying it doesn't matter if someone doesn't fulfill terms of contract and essentially keeps money they didn't make. Im saying if you are a moral person, you pay back whatever part of the terms you didn't meet. Simple. This is what a just court would do. Fred came out ahead by getting paid a whole year for not doing a thing, and jerry didn't complain. But when he quits , esp. After the fa has way already started, and breaks the contract. He needs to fulfill the deal. The owner fulfills the deal by the players agreement with the NFL that allows the NFL to cut players. So, they aren't reneging on the terms of the contract , even if there's times it isn't fair to the player, but vested veterans come out ahead almost every single time they get cut because they get to keep the bonus and get paid the full contract, and if they got a big signing bonus, changing teams can get them paid like twice. So, either Ur honest and fulfill terms of contract , or Ur not. If you don't, pay back the prorated portion. Whatever it may be, to try to not kill a teams cap. That's the point here. At least he didn't wait as long as witten, so in comparison, I consider him better than witten. Show me my greed.:). I showed U urs. I wouldn't want to do business with you, if you think breaking a contract is ok. Ive dealt with that too many times to count and have had to take ppl. To court.

Do you even know what illness he suffers from? I do because I suffer from the same basic illness as well and my employer pays me when I’m out on FMLA due to it’s complications.

Frederick didn’t steal anything and neither has anyone else who gets paid while sick.

They’re not going after the signing bonus. That’s not how Jerry conducts business and especially not a team leader that’s battled like Frederick has the last 2 years. It would also be bad precedent for future players about how the team conducts business with its players
Ordinarily, I would agree. But he retired with FOUR years left on his contract.

relax. Ratliff was a scumbag looking for a loophole. Fred beard is a pillar looking for some quality of life.

Also that is money he earned in 2017 that just got pushed back for cap purposes. People are acting like Frederick stole from the team.

Bogus how the contracts work that way when a player retires.

Nonetheless..we have 23 million now and aren’t penny pinching so I doubt it would change much.

Agree there’s no protection for the team, I honestly think teams should get all of that players cap space back if the player retires in the offseason or pro rated for in season.
Shocked the owners haven’t pushed for this. It’s going to become more and more of a thing as everyone starts to realize the long term effects of concussions

Dont begrudge him a damm dime. He gave us seven years and a smart as hell center who made all the line calls. He was a very good player and person, walk away on your own terms Travis, good luck to ya man.

Now, bet that extra 20 million sitting out there on Daks tag would come in handy about now huh !

Lol. You sir should be banned from this board with such a ridiculous take on a man putting his family and health first. Especially with what is literally going on right now.

Doesn't matter, he should be obligated to fulfill the terms of the contract by good faith bargaining. I just lost my respect for Frederick!

Come on? He retires so be it. He know his body better than we do. As long as he doesn't pull a Jason Witten I'm okay with it.

Prime example as to why restructuring and kicking salary down the road as a signing bonus needs to be managed cautiously.

The accelerated bonus comes to around 11 mill. That's just about his 2020 cap hit if he played. The net impact on our cap is negligible. People look at the dead but miss what we aren't getting charged if he stayed.
I think people see it like I do
It doesn’t cost us more than we would have paid, that is true
But it cost you the same as you would have paid and you don’t have the player
I think most actually understand there isn’t an additional cost but except for who ever you have to sign to replace him which won’t be that expensive

They need to restructure Crawford from 8 mil to 4 mil or release him. We need another center and going into the season saying Looney and McGovern are the answers will get them killed. Penn State actually stated McGovern second position was center and remember the size of Looney's contract was very small so nobody was chasing him. Most teams look at him like a backup.

yes I think we should restructure Crawford but

We have 24 million dollars. That 4 million isn’t going to be the difference between a new center or not. Not that either of us know better options on the market right now.

Very true
But it’s a pay me now, pay me later
Without going back and seeing the restructures it was probably needed money at the time
A fairly low risk restructuring because he was a star player at a position that he is not old at
The gamble didn’t work out
The practice has risks and it’s burned us and other teams
But there are times when it is a practical way to basically finance your sports car instead of paying cash for it
But it is kicking debt down the road so you can spend more now
Would have been nice if we had got a super bowl or a shot at one out of those risks
