Not ready to say that. Would be nice if Connor Williams could salvage his 2nd round draft status by taking the job.

I would rather not see that. I'd rather Williams be the Swing Tackle because I don't believe Smitty can go 16 or more with his back. LT is too important a position and I believe Williams is the best Swing Tackle option we have. I'd rather see Looney win the job until a better solution can be found and I'd rather McG eventually win the LG spot because he is best suited to that position and he can also play RG. With Martin's knee and ankle issues, I'd rather have him playing Guard if necessary.

He can't take on power at OG and you want him at C directly in front of you QB? Heck to the No!

He can not play C, has never played C, and does not need to be put at C never ever.

He has played Center. He played Tackle, Guard and Center at Texas.

I think you will see Williams as the swing tackle. He was over drafted for what we want him to do as an OL.

I certainly wouldn’t be penciling in McGovern to be our starting center next season. lol We’ve yet to even see him on a practice field. Looney inherits the job and someone would have to beat him out.

This is making the McGovern drafting look more genius. I thought so at the time, and even more now: They drafted him not just as "depth" or BPA, and not just to be Williams insurance, because Frederick was still a question mark.

I’m not to get excited about McGovern until he proves he can stay healthy and he can play. We didn’t get to see anything from him last season so we’ll see. Just hoping he’s not going to be one of those players who’s always hurt.

Looney played admirably at C in 2018. But I’m also of the opinion that Connor McGovern has more raw talent and more upside than Looney. I could see McGovern taking a little time to get up to speed but I think he’s a better long term answer than Looney who is more of a stop gap.
I think McG has good talent
But he’s never played a snap and hasn’t played a ton of center
Just think he is the swing guy to learn for a year
Center is a tough mental position so a year could help there
But that’s what camp is for
Line them up and check them out

Frederick playing so well from Day 1 at C is an anomaly, but how does McGovern compare to Fred coming out of college? I do know Fred was generally regarded as a 2nd-3rd round guy, similar to McGovern.

Great tone, and phrasing of a post Bob, I agree with you :)

The most obvious choice & for good reason is Looney. He's already done this before, stepping into the starting lineup playing all 16 games in '18 when Frederick went down.

McGovern on the other hand had limited work last offseason. Dallas allowed him to get reps at center on at least a couple occasions. But that's it.

Center is the most important position on the Oline.

McGovern has played both Guard and Center while in college, but he missed all of 2019 with the Cowboys due to injury (pectoral...which required surgery to repair).

You don't mess around with the most important position on the Oline, especially with a "rookie" coming off of preseason injury/surgery who has yet to gain any on-the-field experience whatsoever.

The best thing for the Cowboys to do is start Joe Looney at Center, which he played admirably throughout all of 2018 due to Frederick being diagnosed with his illness, and you give Connor McGovern practice reps as a backup Center in case Looney goes down with injury in 2020 while also buying time for McGovern to be ready for 2021+ since Looney just got re-signed for 1 year (2020) only. This also gives the Cowboys time to further evaluate Looney this 2020 season to determine if they want to keep him past 2020.

So, start Looney even if McGovern beats him out?

Looney is a backup type.

The infatuation with Looney at C reminds me of the infatuation with Leary at LG. Both players are too limited to ever be more than serviceable starters in spurts.

Very well could be. However I let them battle it out. Because Looney has experience I admit I feel comfortable with him at center but McGovern very well could prove himself as the better man. Should be an interesting battle for center
Looney is terrible. Only way to salvage the line is if McGovern can win the position and be our center of the future.

Did you see how good Looney started at Center all of the 2018 season?

Have you seen video on YouTube about when McGovern played Center his sophomore year in college? He did not look better than Looney did for the Cowboys in 2018.

If McGovern beats Looney out for the starter's job this training camp and preseason, you'll hear no argument from me, but I seriously doubt McGovern will beat Looney right away considering Looney started a whole season at Center (and played admirably well) while McGovern has yet to even get on any professional football playing field.
