Big Mike’s leadership sends the right message this offseason

We have yet to play a regular season NFL game under the leadership of new HC Mike McCarthy, but his first offseason so far has been nothing short of outstanding. There have been numerous threads here about the great draft we had and the quality of players acquired, and how exciting this new infusion of talent and hope the MM has brought, and I agree.

But I want to focus on something I think is underrated in what has happened this offseason- a message MM has been sending that has the potential to improve the culture of our team:
  • A player’s talent is more important than systems and schemes- not the other way around. Big Mike has said repeatedly that he measures players first by talent as opposed to their ability to align with the schemes we run. Under Garrett, too often it seemed we were drafting players whose scheme “fit” was more important than raw football talent and athletic ability.
  • No one on this team is guaranteed anything. Another refreshing change. Let me make something clear- I like Dak and I believe he is too often unfairly bashed by some of our fans here. I believe Dak will be signed to a long term deal and I’m good with that. BUT....I was glad to see the Andy Dalton signing because it sends a message to every player on this team. No one is more important than the team as a whole. And everyone must earn their stripes.
During the Romo years under Garrett, I was bothered by how much this team protected Romo and never really put any pressure on him to deliver more. Despite Romo’s all too often lack of results when the season was on the line, there never seemed to be any difficulty or hesitancy in re-signing him or even hinting that someone else could be developed or brought in to challenge him. I liked Romo and respected him. But I felt like Jerry and Garrett coddled him.

Both Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman faced having backups that breathed down their collars for playing time and there’s little doubt it made them better.

Roger had Craig Morton and later Danny White on the roster when he played, and he said many times those guys made him better. Troy had Steve Walsh followed by Steve Buerlein to deal with. I realize in the cap era it’s more difficult to do this, but I see the Dalton signing as a good thing for Dak and this team. I know he wasn’t signed “to be the starter”, but it does send the right message.

I like what Big Mike’s leadership has brought to this team so far. It’s way too early to declare him a success before we’ve even had a single game. But the message being sent about talent and competition is a good start to a new era.

this isnt about Dak really its important we have a backup in case we are in a one game win and you are in and we have the Dak issue ie shoulder and now can turn to an experienced backup and yes on a smaller level to let Dak know he best play better because mid way through the 3rd qtr you cant move the team you might be replaced for the rest for that game..its about winning not letting the starters play no matter how poorly they are playing down to the final snap and we lose..
two kickers, many different DBs , c/g stacked , DL addressed. DE many to compete..

if we have a TC or live practices for battles, this will be a very competitive environment where spots will have to be earned..

others debate this isnt to send a message TO DAK, BUT IT MIGHT NOT BE A THREAT BUT ITS PROMISE THAT YOU WANT TO PLAY SIGN THE DEAL ON THE TABLE OR FT, IF NOT the fo is comfortable going with Dalton..it changes the negation a bit even if that not the intention..

What backup did Troy ever have that was breathing down his neck for playing time?
The two Steve’s....Steve Walsh and Steve Beurline.

Beurline was the guy in ‘91 who actually took over when Aikman got hurt and he started the last 5 regular season games, winning all 5. The Cowboys went 11-5 and made the playoffs as a wild card for the first time in 6 seasons and first under Jimmy. Beurline even won the wild card playoff game at Chicago before the team got beat the next week in the divisional round.

This led Aikman to demand to either be traded or assured he was still the #1 QB. Of course Aikman went on the next year to lead the Cowboys to the SB and the rest is history. Troy even says today that being pushed by his backups in those days helped him develop.

Looking at the very recent history is the best indicator.

Also, they just waived Rush. Wouldn't you keep him around if Dalton was potentially going to be the starter?
I believe Dalton will beat out Dak for the starting job in camp.

I agree with the philosophy of competition.. In fact, Roger Staubach specifically stated that what often drove him was the realization that Danny White was a legitimate talent at QB. He was accurate and extremely competitive like Roger.

By the end of the 82 season Joe Montana was the leader in all time passing rating. Roger Staubach was #2. Danny White was #3.

In other words, Danny White was good enough to be considered legitimate competition.

in my opinion, as it applies to current circumstances, this is where there is a problem. I don't believe Andy Dalton can be considered legitimate competition. I think he has physically bottomed out as an NFL QB. I think his competitive drive has also been effected. I really hope the Cowboys can avoid testing this opinion at some point in the upcoming season, particularly the beginning.

As far as the concept of gameplanning to a player's strength instead of a set philosophy, that would be the complete opposite of Tom Landry, who believed in his players adhering to his specific strategy, sometimes to the detriment of their physical abilities. He did this for the sake of continuity and because it gave lesser talented players the ability to succeed.

Landry committed to his scheme and pushed compliance to the point that there are dark stories. one of them involves the NFC championship game in the 1972 season

The main issue is there is always the possibility of injury.

Suppose you taylor your offense to the specific style of a RB. Let's say he is injured. Now what? Everything you have been doing all season with the running game has to be modified to fit the particular style of the new RB.

When you change a scheme for a particular player, your team no longer has the ability to change peices without disrupting the productivity of the entire offense. In our example, the offensive line would have to change their blocking style, the playcalling would be effected, overall consistency becomes a problem.

The reason that the Cowboys could start two undrafted rookie free agent DB's in the 1981 season and set a franchise record for INT's was because his scheme had the ability to protect them. The reason two rookies can combine for 20 INT's in a single system isn't because 30 NFL teams were dumb enough to pass up elite talent........17 times.....the number of rounds in those days. They adhered to Landry's system.

It is also how Landry was able to get to the Super Bowl with 12 contributing rookies in the first year of a massive rebuilding process.

I think the problem for the Cowboys these last seasons wasn't because they didn't scheme to talented players, it was because their system sucked. Garrett was constantly trying to build a Coryell type offense with players that didn't belong in that scheme. The Cowboys have been drafting well on paper but not winning because there is no consistent system. Its as if three different people are trying to build the team their way.

I don't know, perhaps the times have changed. Perhaps the successful teams are able to integrate both ideas into having a primary but flexible scheme with the ability to adjust quickly and effectively

Competition is good.Dallas never had any real positional competition it was just a place to get paid and kept out of blind loyalty way past the due date thus we fell from the premier franchise to a laughing stock. No more. Competition cuts through a lot of BS and BS antics and gets down the the meat of the issue. Every QB wants to start. Earn yout spot. Stay sharp. Don't get too greedy. Be ready. I suspect the same competition will be commonplace throughout the rank and file position wise. There is a new Sheriff in town and his name is MIke McCarthy. We haven't had an actual Sheriff on duty since Parcells, Jimmy and coach Laundry but hey - here we go again. The clowns are gone.

Unless he blows up in preseason, Nooch needs to be on PS.

Don't think he will last in our practice squad. Other teams was wanting him as a UDFA. They will snatch him up as soon as they can.

No. All it said was "we have a competent backup."

Yes but that "competent backup" becomes a reasonable option in the event that Dak holds out once the season starts.
In the midst of contract negotiations, it's worthwhile that Dak and his agent knows that the team is not without a reasonable option in the event of an extended hold out.

I definitely have no complaints as to what this new staff is doing thus far. There's much work to be done, without question but so far, so good. Under the current leadership, we have enjoyed one of the best drafts ever.

If that's not enough, we've settled our backup situation with a backup who has had vast experience and has been a class act throughout his career. That would never have happened under JG and the situation that had existed during his tenure.

I'm looking forward to seeing how things progress in the months ahead. Hopefully, this may continue to bode well for our future. Much awaits to be settled between now and the start of TC. Many adjustments will be made between now and then. Let's hope our luck holds out.

Andy Dalton is not a reasonable option as a long-term starter, so this idea is totally bunk.

Leverage for the Cowboys would be Cam Newton.

MM is stating, its his team, his way or the highway. Without sayin it. Those that fall in line and put the work in will be here. Those that wanna be selfish diva's eventually will get weeded out and be gone. Hope Dlaw is listening...Jaylon Smith too.

If you can't see a huge difference in almost everything coming from the Cowboys this off season you are either not looking or don't want to see it. It's no coincidence that this difference coincides with the arrival of MM.
And the message is coming from action, not just talk. We still have to see results on the field of course before declaring the MM hire a success. But this feels like we have a real NFL HC for the first time since Parcells.

He will be if Dak doesn't sign. :muttley:

Oh, and 6th rounder Tom Brady was Drew Bledsoe's back up. But he was a 6th and not a 7th.
No he wasn't. The 2000 Patriots famously kept 4 QBs on the roster and Brady was 4th string.

MM isn't the GM.

Isn't in charge of player personell.

Didn't run the draft board or sign any of the UFAs.

That's all Stephen and WillM.

Ok...But Serious question for you: Would all of these things have happened even if Jason Garrett were still HC?

I gotta think that Jaylon Smith is not promoting his brand this year with McCarthy as head coach. We need accountability for a change and I believe that the new coach brings that in spades.

If he plays well then yeah. But if he doesn't....it makes no sense to put him on the roster when you can sneak him on the practice squad.
55 man roster now and tbh I don't see him sneaking onto the PS. Way too much interest in him for that to happen.
