In Conclusion, I Blame Garrett

I don't even think Garrett is the worst coach ever or anything, but

While it isn't an either/or situation about Jones and Garrett, it's certainly a both situation. Garrett was clearly not up to the job he was hired for, but Jerry was willing to go to insane lengths to keep him and their relationship going.

Backed up by quotes like these coming out:

“What was Jerry thinking allowing this to go on for so long?”

“Did you know that Jerry was still not sold on firing him until he met Mike McCarthy?”

“Did you know Jerry wanted to extend him before 2019 until Stephen talked him out of it?”

I can't post the article, but I hope I'm not breaking any rules in posting these quotes as I feel strongly that the information is relevant.

I recall Romo getting hammered a lot and only small pockets of complaints against Garrett for years.
Dak still gets hammered by some too, but in recent years the gloves have come off regarding Garrett.
If Garrett has done anything to help people's later impressions on Romo, it was how the curtains have been pulled away in the years since he retired.
It is clear that he and the coaching staff were a big issue for anyone playing for Dallas.

Garrett's not the worst, but he's just not all that good either.

Unless you’re discussing the topic with someone who relies on things like ‘evidence’ to decide what they think about a topic. So you’re generally safe in here, yeah.

Didn’t “as much as reach a conference championship” is pretty illustrative of where the delta is between your expectations and the reality of the organizations performance, btw. There are a lot of things that can stand between a team and a conference championship game. “Yeah, but” might seem like an appropriate reply to that, but it’s actually not. With all the money and parity involved in the league right now, organizations need to be optimized for winning. Making it to the final four with an organization optimized for the pleasure of the owner, first, and for building brand value, second, shouldn’t ever be considered a given.

Still haven't figured out that Garrett was joke yet eh? Even after the loser was fired?

And who can forget you telling us all that Garrett would be highly recruited for a HC gig the moment he left here?

And he got how many calls?………………………….ZERO!!!

Wow you really nailed that one. :muttley:

These offseason threads get worse and worse. Yes, everyone agrees, after 10 years Garrett couldn't put it together and it was time for a change. But his offense sucked? It was #1 last year with an middle of the pack QB. And does nobody see Dak audibling? He can run or pass at any time. He can pass on 1st down all the time if he wants. Christ, the horse is dead, let up on it.

LOL...….oh yah that really looked like Garrett's offense last year. Moore came in and made a stooge out of Garrett.

NO one can ever let this board forget about the horrid Garrett. Maybe when some certain posters admit they were dead wrong about him it will get less grueling for them.

I understand. He was a better HC than Wade.

Garrett better than Wade? LOL

Cmon you cant be serious. Wade at least was good at what he did, coach the defense. And Wade did what he did even with the horrid Garrett running the offense.

Wade would coach circles around the overwhelmed Garrett. Garrett couldn't even run the offense.

Romo simply bailed him out with a ton of passing yards every year. I recall the year Romo got hurt for most of the season, Garrett's offense was the worst in the league. NFL history bad.

The rest of your post isn’t interesting enough to reply to, but I probably should point out that this suggestion here is a lie on your part that you’ve tried to float a couple of times now. Unless, of course, you have a link?

I mean, ok.

I do blame Garrett. But only because Garrett was who he was. And he wasn't right for the NFL.

He was a protege of Nick Saban.

All his lingo is Saban lingo. Execution. Process . These are the things Saban preaches at Alabama. These are themes Garrett learned under him in Miami.

Nick Saban isn't known as an X's and O's genius. He can help build solid defenses, but there are better defensive minds in college than he. What he does is make a "process" like Garrett.

That process has, and no one argues it, creates top tier teams, but it does it with the college football recruiting system. Alabama can do it because they always attract a field of recruits that end up giving them so much talent and depth that their third string could likely replace most college football teams's firsts.

They can make a pretty simple system based on execution and throwing players into the parts. Saban does his "process" and it always yields results. It's not special, it's not innovative, it's not exciting, but it works.

Garrett tried to do the same in the NFL just like Saban tried in Miami. Garrett got a bit farther because he was a player. Miami rejected Saban because he threw his weight around and never even tried to get their respect.

But, yeah, they both went for the same idea and system. Overwhelm with talent, rely on execution, keep it simple.

It works in college. Didn't in the NFL.

I mentioned before in another thread Jeff Cavanaugh and others complaining on twitter live during games about the offensive playcalling. Here's Jeff talking about research based on last year.

Basically the worst thing we did (in terms of getting yards) on first down was run the football. The best thing we did was play action. So obviously there were more runs than play action on first down.

This is the sort of thing that happens when you don't self scout/use analytics (or maybe they did and just chose to ignore that input).

edit: Pretty sure this is what he was referring to:

Legend has it that some fools here still vent about Garrett instead of focusing on everyday life.

Who’s been the worse HC during that stretch last 24 years since we last made a championship appearance ?
Switzer, Gailey, Campo, Parcells, Phillips or Garrett?

Maybe this is deserving of its own thread?

I was pretty sure Garrett sucked when he unveiled that triangle back field crap as OC. I had further verification that he sucked when he iced his kicker. More proof of sucking was on display when he couldn’t recover from Romo’s injury and went 4-12. Getting smoked at home vs SD was another great example of sucking. He also sucked when he allowed ATL to tee off on a young QB. The cherry on the suck cake was this past season. Losing to the Jets particularly sucked.

I have told anyone that would listen that Garrett sucks for about 13 years.
