Don't ever hire a lawyer.

.....or a plumber, car mechanic, doctor, electrician,.....

If Jerry Jones bought a five star restaurant, he'd make himself the Head Chef. When the real chefs disagreed with his culinary choices it would be time for them to go. Hopefully, they wouldn't get stampeded by the customers on their way out the door.

It was Jerry himself who said in 1989 that "Nobody can own the Dallas Cowboys". He claimed that the team belonged to the fans and he was merely a "caretaker".A professional team is a partnership between the owner and the host city or region. If the city in which the Cowboys operate ever decided to terminate their agreement then Jerry would have to negotiate with a different city. Does this mean Jerry is an employee of the city?

The team's business relationships go far beyond that of employer/employee. When it involves a contract, the proper definition would be that of an individual contractor. Head coaches are offering their services on a limited basis and under specific terms. these terms can be in the contract and therefore enforceable. They can be verbal in which case, one way to resolve the dispute is to end the relationship.

Jimmy wasn't fired. He didn't "walk away". Jerry Jones admitted partial fault by way of a separation agreement that paid Jimmy a lot of money. Employers don't do that for employees.

When it came to what they were there to do, every single coach hired by the Cowboys were better than Jerry Jones.
Every coach should be better at coaching than the owner. Duh! The owner is still the boss and if you think you're bigger than that, you shouldn't be there. I don't get your argument other than a hard on for jimmy of hate for Jerry. Can't be hate, cause you're still here cheering like a school girl for Jerry's team.

Genius isn't enough anymore. You need players. He didn't look like a genius in Miami.
Although, he was smart enough to quit when he realized this.
If huizinga would have let jimmy trade marino, things might have been better. But wayne was puppy dog loyal.

So many here deify this guy and I understand, but he had so many things go his way (you guys know he didn't want to draft Emmitt?) yet it's what he cooked in the kitchen with his ingredients that made it all count.

He was genuinely lucky here though. Glad he made it work. Many might not have.

Jimmy was great, but he chose to leave and not be a good employee, so good riddance! When the employee want more attention than the guy that signs the checks, it's time to go.
You guys may not have followed it closely but when Jimster left UM to come to Dallas, UM was happy to get rid of Jimster as the team was getting a lot of heat with player off the field issues. Thuggery and concerns about many of his players were from less than good backgrounds in Florida.

So he left UM on bad terms and essentially had similar issues with Jerrah and quit and left again.

And when in Miami, Jimster never did get things smoothed out with ownership and he retired and took his booth job.

So it all depends on how you look at Johnson. We certainly got his best results. That's for sure.

Howard schnellenberger had same problem. Jimmy liked swagger.

Tom Landry invented the flex defense. What did Jimmy Johnson do. Required Charles Haley. That was the best move team ever did . Oh yeah the Herschel Walker deal LOL people forget how fat. Jimmy cheated refused to play players and required draft picks for it For cheating’s OK because it’s the Cowboys LOL

But Jimmy was duped then by the owner because Jimmy was also general manager as well as head coach. He probably couldn't even bench Marino.

This goes for Jerry as much as Jimmy. It wasn't as easy to win Super Bowls and stay consistently post season competitive in the salary cap and free agency era. Jimmy never went on to head coach another team. Jimmy and Jerry were like brothers, competitive with a mixture of love-hate. Familiarity definitely bred contempt.

Didn’t do much in Miami. He is a great motivator. And had no problem benching a player.

True for every coach prior to salary caps with the exception of HC's that owned the team.

Jerry would not be the Cowboys owner today had it not been for Jimmy Johnson. Cowboy fans couldn't wait to run "Jed Clampett" out of town.
Jerry would likely be disliked even more than he is if he hadn’t had Jimmy early on, but fans can’t force an owner to sell the team, so Jerry very well might still be the owner even if he never hired Jimmy.

you mean like Taco and Mr "what do inactive mean" Tryston Hill? Guess Rod never saw the clip

:hammer:

And Rod somehow gets another job, while the Cowboys are still trying to pick up the pieces.

Watching "A Football Life" with Jimmy Johnson again - and he is talking to Bill Belichick on the his boat - and he says the one thing about drafting that I think is forgotten over and over again - "Hit me in the head with a hammer the next time I take a dumb guy". And Belichick said "you taught me that well"! Truer words have never been spoken. Belickick also said "you can't fix that". Johnson said you can't reason with dumb.......

While I think Dallas has drafted extremely well for about the last decade, there are still a couple of examples of this simple drafting mistake that might fit what Jimmy was talking about.

Anyone care to give examples of draft picks that fit that category above? In some cases the dumb and unreasonable probably only shows up after they are drafted (say the right thing in original interview, have support of a few coaches in College, or fool a few .....)....

Jimmy's psychological training and ability to treat and motivate unique players differently were examples of his amazing coaching.
A not so smart player we drafted that really jumps out from recent years was Mo Claiborne. Not very smart and not very durable is a terrible combination for a guy drafted 5th in the first round. Bust.

A smart player always has a chance to get better. A nit smart player always has a chance to kill you with a stupid play.

Great post. Agree 100%.

Owning a professional sports team in a large metro area is completely different than owning a family lumber company. Too many of our fans act like Jerry owns a local family lumber company and can do whatever he wants with “his team”. When an owner’s team takes the name of a community, they also take some responsibility to that community that supports it. The best owners have always recognized that.

Jerry has had no problem taking tax payer dollars from Arlington and Frisco to help build his multi-billion dollar empire. Most owners do that. But his stubborn arrogance to be “the restaurant owner who also wants to be the chef” as you eloquently put it, is where Jerry separates himself. And the last 25 years of doing things the way Jerry likes it done, speak for themselves. His arrogance and stubbornness is the #1 reason this team is one of only 3 in the entire NFC not play in at least an NFC championship game. The Cowboys, Washington and Detroit. That’s on Jerry.
