Not knowing what was offered I'm willing to wait. It's his first year back after a five-year lay off, who's to say that he won't play better next season and be a useful part of what we're trying to achieve.

The guy hasn't made a play in weeks. If we are being honest, Aldon Smith of late has been as bad as anyone in the front seven. He hasn't gotten much pressure, and is a no show against the run.
Playing too many snaps for an older player returning from 5 years away.

He has played a higher percent of snaps than DLaw in his best year. More snaps than many young pass rushers.

I think the role he plays on this defense is perfect for Randy Gregory.

Aldon Smith was a nice piece when we thought we were healthy and had a legitimate chance at a playoff run. After 7 games, it’s obvious this defense needs a complete rebuild with YOUNG talent on rookie contracts to go with our talented but expensive offense. Guys like Aldon, Lee, Griifen, Lewis, Xavier, and some others are not part of a defensive rebuild. Trade any of them that you can, even if it’s for 6th and 7th rounders. Maybe we get lucky with a late round gem. Maybe we use one of those picks to move up a few spots in another round to get a targeted player. I would trade Aldon for whatever the best offer is before the trade deadline.

Right, as they keep Smith, and he plays very well. They can try to sign him, or can get a 3rd or 4th round comp pick, instead of that 6th or 7th round in a trade.
I have no doubt the Cowboys considered a trade. But the only way they would make one, is if the pick were higher than the comp pick the Cowboys expect to get. Unless a long term deal is their plan. I'm not sure a comp pick could be as high as a 3 or 4 however. Hey you never know.

Why would we trade away the only guy who has a pulse on defense? I'd try to get him signed to a reasonable contract, but I don't think he wants his career to be defined by the circus here

Tough call..

He’s 31 though and we are a mess.

That makes it an easy call imo. It was a virtually zero risk move signing him and it paid out in dividends and a pick would be legitimate return. What does keeping him solve when you're losing games and going nowhere and he's going to be 32 next season. If he was a few years younger I'd get it, but what real value does a 31 year old have on a losing team.

Aldon's play has fallen off a cliff IMO. He is also slow as molasses. He is powerful as hell but his lack of explosion hampers our defense, imo.

I would have traded him. He is a progress stopper...
Heard he switched sides with Lawrence. Notice how Lawrence took off and Smith declined about the same time. Same with criticism. Sometimes it isnt the player the just immediately falls off, but the scheme they face.

Smith is on a one year deal. We are going nowhere this year. Not trading him for anything decent is stupid. Beyond stupid. Now, if the offer was a 7th, who cares.

If he is happy here its much better to keep him here working with our coaches to resign him. With a full year in the system and real football conditioning he could be a beast next year, I'd rather have that than a late round pick.
