What can actually be done with Jaylon Smith?

He's a spaz. Watch him. It's like he snorts a pixie stick before each play. His feet are always constantly moving, bouncing around, and not in a good way.

Dude is a riddilen raider, for sure.

With the tape on him....i don't think you can get anything. Avoids contact is not want you want to hear when describing a lb. I think its toxic to team to have him swiping getting paid millions and showing no effort
This. He's a detriment both on the field and as a teammate. A good, healthy effective defense usually has 1 or 2 strong leaders who lead by action/results. The film does not lie and you know his teammates/coaches are watching him turning his back to blockers and consistently dodging blockers taking himself out of plays. So if I'm playing on the same unit and my "leader" is not physically engaged at the LB position, I'm asking myself why I'm even trying when my coaches are not replacing or benching such an apparent weakness to make us better. It's sad and again comes from the ostriches at the top who's head are buried over what the GM wants in a feel good story. Smith is a total embarrassment to this team, to any NFL linebacker who take pride in playing the position. Anyone who doubts that, just re-watch the games and zero in on 54. Its a disgrace.

When you're full sending it on the QB he is good..

Problem is you can't just have a blitz only linebacker because it tips your hand,

Nobody will trade for him. His contract is awful.

I guess you keep him until the contract gives us an opportunity to cut him.

On the bright side LVE is starting to flash again. If he ever gets back to where he was then that's something we can definitely build on.
Yeah but, if we keep him, MUST we play him?

I know there is a lot of Smith talk but I would love to get your serious take on what can actually be done with him. He was one of the worst players on the field again last night. The Giants game was the only good one he has had dating back to mid season last year. I don’t think he is limited physically. Personally I think he prefers to avoid direct contact, shows poor effort and clearly does little work in the film room.

If you were GM:

1. Would you cut him, trade him, bench him?
2. If you trade him what do you seriously think his trade value is?

I would trade him. I think someone would try to fix him. I think he gets you a 5 or a 6.

Thanks for your views.
I focused on him for several plays last night and was quite shocked. On the positive side, when the play was to the outside he was solid. Pursued the runner or WR with determination and speed. But when the play was up the middle he would shy away from contact only piling on at the end of the play.

Yeah, Jaylon and his contract might be the worst predicament with this roster. He's "maybe" a 3-4 pass rusher, but he doesn't really have the body for that, either.

There isn't really a position for him on this defense that works, but you're paying him a ton of money. They're trying to force him into a slot that he doesn't fit in, and thus the results we see.

And that's not even discussion his awareness and confidence. I don't think either are very high right now.

You CANT trade him. Impossible with the bonus he got. I would definitely bench him for a few games or at least rotate guys in. He sucks. Cut him or try to trade him as soon as possible. Which I think is next year. If we can get a MLber with our first pick and move Smith to the outside, that might work for season before we cut him.

Except you really have nothing to lose at this point. I get the whole send a message to the team point, but from last nights performance I’m not sure that’s needed right now. It’s not like these guys have just packed it in.

plus what’s the alternative, are you playing Sean lee 40 snaps a game?

So you think that because some of the players actually showed they were alive that all of a sudden they are going to play like that the rest of the season? I will disagree. They are going to get absolutely destroyed next week and the defense will give up again as the offense will get shut out.

You heard it here first!!!!!!!

The effort he goes through to avoid contact but be involved in the play must be mentally exhausting.

Pretty much my take. If he’s chasing/blitzing / open field running—he’s good. But yea- you can’t have a blitz only guy.

One idea is to make him play a hybrid safety type thing where he covers outlet TE’s (or blitzes).

Maybe ride it out until you can cut him or if he shows some life, trade him.

He has (had?) all the elite physical tools, so you should have options packages.

But as another poster said—if he’s not stepping up his film /work habits and he’s pulling that kind of cash-especially after how he came to the nfl.....yea- has to go.

This X 1000. His film is so bad I am convinced that their is an unspoken agreement between him and everyone in the organization including the players. The agreement is to simply look the other way.

Every bad angle he takes is sticking out like a sore thumb. He bites on moves and gets straight up beat. I would restructure his contract or ask him to take a pay cut. I don't think anyone is going to take on his contract.
