What can actually be done with Jaylon Smith?

I know there is a lot of Smith talk but I would love to get your serious take on what can actually be done with him. He was one of the worst players on the field again last night. The Giants game was the only good one he has had dating back to mid season last year. I don’t think he is limited physically. Personally I think he prefers to avoid direct contact, shows poor effort and clearly does little work in the film room.

If you were GM:

1. Would you cut him, trade him, bench him?
2. If you trade him what do you seriously think his trade value is?

I would trade him. I think someone would try to fix him. I think he gets you a 5 or a 6.

Thanks for your views.

Id cut him. No one is going to want him at his cost.

When you're full sending it on the QB he is good..

Problem is you can't just have a blitz only linebacker because it tips your hand,

Nobody will trade for him. His contract is awful.

I guess you keep him until the contract gives us an opportunity to cut him.

On the bright side LVE is starting to flash again. If he ever gets back to where he was then that's something we can definitely build on.
Jaylon Smith is another player duo..

Wolf Hunter is tethered with Jaylon

like Dak is with Zeke.

When one player is complimenting the other..

Both set of twins can be Giant Killers.

All this Smith dissing came when Wolf Hunter got injured. Jaylon did not look the same.

But we saw Wolf Hunter return and Jaylon lead the defense against the Giants.

So this symbiotic relation exists.

We had another one when Beard was at center and Zach Martin was at G.

Each plays off the other. The sum of the parts is greater than the whole.

So I am not sure you really do anything except play them together and hope they are not China Dolls.

I pray we get a new DC in the off season who will bring some fresh ideas that badly needs it

Trade him to a team with a good set of coaches who hold players accountable for their play...he then turns into the Smith that was drafted

Unfortunately no organization will trade for him if they watch 20 minutes of tape. Horrible angles, looks for others to make contact first, completely clueless and can't read plays and always out of position.

Were just going to have to cut him at this point.

IMO his only chance is if Dallas somehow gets 2 bad *** DTs that keep him completely clean, like he has nothing to do but constantly run in straight lines towards the ball.

He should be on the edge and rushing much more

This. He's a detriment both on the field and as a teammate. A good, healthy effective defense usually has 1 or 2 strong leaders who lead by action/results. The film does not lie and you know his teammates/coaches are watching him turning his back to blockers and consistently dodging blockers taking himself out of plays. So if I'm playing on the same unit and my "leader" is not physically engaged at the LB position, I'm asking myself why I'm even trying when my coaches are not replacing or benching such an apparent weakness to make us better. It's sad and again comes from the ostriches at the top who's head are buried over what the GM wants in a feel good story. Smith is a total embarrassment to this team, to any NFL linebacker who take pride in playing the position. Anyone who doubts that, just re-watch the games and zero in on 54. Its a disgrace.
the "untouchables" mentality is exactly the disease that must be eradicated from this organization.

I say just keep running out him out there and pretend like he is playing well.

Seems to be the organizational philosophy.

You have to make a decision before the 5th league day of 2021. After that, he's guaranteed $7.2 million.

You'd like to trade him but at this point, there would probably be no takers. The only option is to cut him. It's a large dead money hit in a year where you may have some cap issues, but it does save $400K on the cap. Normally I'd say no, given the cap issues, but if you are really trying to shake up the defense this offseason, he might be a bullet you need to bite.

Once your team has evaluated Jaylon -..and assuming it's not gonna be another Tyron Crawford favor bias charity case again
You have to decide if there's anything salvagable with Jaylon. And there's anything scheme wise that can help stand him out and make
him more of a difference maker.

- But what is it that Jaylon does well ? What area does he stand out ?
vs Run ?
vs coverage ?
Blitzing ?

- From what i have observed in his game - he flat works best when he can move forward, ..and he flat has to be freed up to make any kind of play
If he a blocker whether OL, TE or FB get their hands on them ... he's done for. He gets stuck on blocks, doesn't shed well and doesn't rift thru
traffic well at all.

- Coverage? every time you see him in man coverage, always with his back to the ball, and frailing his arms of the receiver.- and Jay can be vulnerable
to screen plays and will occasionally blow assignments
Foes know how weak he is in coverage and the better teams imposes game plans.

- Blitzing ? this new Nolan scheme and a move to the OLB role was supposed to emphasize his blitzing skills. But thus far he's been
a non factor there. He flourished there in college- but at NFL, backs have been stone-cold him He cannot/doesn't beat blocks !

If no use for Jaylon - put him on trade block or you cut him, if no takers... as his contract is not sizeable
