Why do tankers think drafting high means anything?

Emmitt Smith, Michael Irvin, Tony Romo, and a host of other non top 5 picks disagree with you. This team's biggest issue hasn't been the draft. It's been free agency and resigning many of the wrong guys. Hell, we have kept Crawford here for multiple years on a horrible contract...if we had cut him when we should have, we might have been able to keep a guy like Byron Jones, or Cole Beasley, or Anthony Hitchens, a few of the guys that have been recently rued on this page.

Heck, throw in the stupid, and I mean really stupid decision to pay Zeke a year before we had to. If we had let him wait until his turn, maybe we would have seen that he wasn't worth breaking the bank for. And Jaylon Smith? Don't even get me started there. This team's decisions regarding keeping their own is absolutely ridiculous.

Even if you don't draft a quarterback, higher in every round is better than lower in every round.

What is better about missing the playoffs at 6-10 vs missing playoffs at 3-13? Both teams suck and miss the playoffs. But one team is going to have first shot at the players they preference in the draft while the other team is going to have sit back and wait to see who falls in their lap or give up more draft capitol trying to move up.

You mention the outlier draft picks. Might as well throw in Dan Marino and Joe Montana too. But you can't count on that kind of luck to build a team. You want the best draft slots you can get and none other than Jimmy Johnson understood that concept as he steered the cowboys to a 1-15 record in 1989. He could have won more games but he chose to cut or bench the MN Viking veterans he acquired in the Hershel walker trade. Why would he do that? Jimmy knew that he would rather be 1-15 with draft picks than have a few meaningless wins and inferior picks. He was thinking ahead........which is a foreign concept to many on this board.
Good post......I couldn't have said it better.

It's all relative...you can go look back at every draft and find a few guys picked late in a round that do just as well as guys picked in the early part of the round. Dallas' biggest problems go back to the organization style, the coaching, and dealing with free agency. The draft is far down the list...but the one issue there is we seem to gravitate towards position coaches' pet cats. And it hasn't worked.

tanking rarely works.

mahomes and brady are some of the best qbs since 2000 and they weren't chosen first in the draft.
This is what I've been saying for the last two months.
Joe Montana was a 3rd round pick.
Heck, I think Unitas... or Star..., was a 17th round pick, back in the day.
Staubach was a 10th round pick....because of his commitment to the Navy.
The point is, there are plenty of QB who had solid careers who were not picked in the 1st round.

Sure. Your theory is better.
Again, your method has worked so well for 25 years.

Um, we have drafted high multiple years. How has that worked? The draft is hardly the issue. But you keep thinking it is. And it will be another 25 years of failure.

Are you seriously asking a question trolling?.. You got to understand value a little bit deeper in a lost season and being the one that has that value draft position name your price let another team give the draft away for a QB and the price it cost to to obtain it (losing) so many more options to get the team better

It's about having options to get impact players they want. Pick your guy or trade down to aquire more picks. Gives you flexibility since no one drafts perfect you need more darts to throw.

The extreme ignorance demonstrated in this OP is astounding. It's right up there with not being able to read or do basic math. +s

Draft position matters. Doing something with it is another matter.
Add to that draftniks ---the "gurus"- Kiper, McShay, etc. - and the armchair \ internet\ mom's basement guys - parroting 'THIS IS A WEAK DRAFT' -
They devalue what the process is about --'i.e. - evaluating what a player's collegiate career + abilities, etc., can translate to fitting in to your team's roster---
and succeeding.

Its funny that all these clowns begging for tanking are the same ones saying this team isnt accountable, makes zero sense. Loser mentality usually means loser in life.
Fans hoping there lousy team losses to get a better draft pick is not tanking, Moron!

Ok, fair point.

On the flip side, what does beating 2-9-1 team do for the franchise?
It’s not a fair point. It’s a stupid point.

Also, beating a 2-9-1 team because they fumbled the ball away 3 times, does nothing to help your team get better next year!

Thats all you can do. Be a fan cheer and hope it all comes out on the cowboys side. But to watch a game hoping they lose, i just dont get it.
You don’t get it! Do you think your on the team?
Your a fan! Losing meaningless games this year, gives us the opportunity to draft better players EVERY round this coming draft.

Let’s keep doing what we’re doing. We don’t need high picks.

Drafting where we do works so well for us.
