It's been awhile posting on fan zone. Dan Quinn stated yesterday that the team will be using a 3-4 Defense in their base (obvious run downs) and a 4 man line in the nickel. He confirmed that Neal will be playing linebacker moving forward. How would the run alignment look:

4 Linebackers-Lve, Jaylon, Parsons, Neal
Box SS-Wilson
LE-Tank
NT-Urban
RE-Goldson/Oggy/Watkins (all can easily play the 5T)
Yes, don't think Gregory or Gallimore/Hill play on the early downs.

I truly believe our run defense will be vastly improved.

DLaw played OLB in the 3-4 sets last season.

Urban at 6-7, 295 is unlikely to play 3-4 NT.

Remember that 3-4 is a run defense. Gregory as a DE/LB type is a "big" as compared to the off-ball LBs. He likely plays OLB in the 3-4 sets.

Neal's role is likely as a coverage type LB. They can play 4-3 with Neal as the 3rd LB in some situations that might normally play 4-2-5.

Hill is strong. He played both NT and DE in 3-4 sets last season. He played 3-4 NT in his first 2 college seasons.

The rookies in the front 7 other than Parsons will likely just be rotational players. Even Parsons is unlikely to play all of the snaps.

Good post.

I do think that people are panicking a little in thinking the team is going to some 2 gap read and react scheme like what Nolan had based on the 3 4 and hybrid comments. I think its far more complicated than that but functionally I do not think that this is going to be like that. It seems more aggressive.

Fact is the base defense came about as a reaction to the talent the Seahawks had on hand, and people have become convinced its the only way they play.
More accurately, both Pete Carroll and DQ are smart enough to make their front 7 fit the best 7 they can put on the field. They will call it a "package" and we'll be in that package most of the time.

Comparing the new "base" to a Marinelli front:

We are turning the 1T into a two gapper. CZ folks have been asking for this for years. That's a no brainer switch considering the run defense issues. I can't tell you how many hours my bro (A CZ lurker) and
I have spent on this. We've needed a 2 gap 1T for a while.

We are making DLaw play a two gap from a 4T (not a 5T) on running downs. GIven that strong side zone runs double team him anyway, I don't think that's beyond him and he's a strong run defender.

All other positions are more same than different.

On passing downs, we will be playing more Cover 3 than 2 and as the secondary improves, more man to man as a complement. Line play becomes one gap.

But with all the pieces they have, we will see a lot of situational defense. For sure.

I'm not sure Gregory plays in the base defense. The team has great success when he and Crawford platooned a few yrs back. Think he can play the run, but might be more of a nickel player in this defense, kind of like how Seattle used Cliff Avril.

We know Parsons, Lve, Jaylon will all be on the field, the question is will Tank or Neal be that 4th LB?

Who starts at the Nose?

lmao. Gregory would def be starting in a 3-4 front. He might be the only starting 3-4 OLB talent we have on the roster. Maybe Lawrence can play it but everyone knows he is better in the 3 point stance. Neal as a linebacker in a 3-4 front lmao. We would get punished vs running teams if that was our starting 3-4 line up. Easily give up 200 yards rushing a game.

Got to remember, it's to stop the run, not rush the passer on the obvious running downs.

He is very similar to Tyrone Crawford, who was a former 3rd rd pick as well. His strength right now is against the run, which is sorely needed.

Dont want another Tyrone Crawford to be honest. Hopefully he can contribute in some way.

You need players who do the dirty work, so your stars can make the plays.

We need starters. Other than Parsons and a prayer on Joseph, these guys seem like backups and rotation guys if that.

I don't. Now can it be? Sure, but I don't believe anything about this team.

In the base, could see Golston playing the 4T, he has the necessary length to fit well. NT is going to be Urban. Odggy/Hill/Gallimore is the 3T and Tank plays the Leo.
I seriously hope they dont try to put a 6'7 300 lbs guy at NT
